I live and have grown up with irukandji jellyfish and have witnessed someone be stung by one, its brutal. Us locals are weary of swimming in stinger nets without stinger suites as they can still get through. We also get box jellies and man of war jellies too but we call them blue bottles. Yay for living in Australia 😂
Do they cause deaths like the box jellyfish?
@colbie472 nah box jellies are definitely more lethal. Their in the same family so they have similar symptoms though so neither are pleasant to say the least. Irukandji are so small, the size of a thumbnail, so unless you see it happening, you won't even know you've been stung until symptoms start, where box jellies you will know immediately.
I have actually gotten stung but the man of war. It hurts very bad. The first day it was stinging, the second day, it was the mix of stinging and puffy ness. The third day it was itchy and puffy. It left a scar on my warm for about 3 months.
Damn, sounds like you're sensitive to it. I've been stung by the Portuguese man 'o war about a dozen times and it's never left a mark on me...I just unwrap the tentacles and rub sand on it. But then again my family grew up fishing in Hawaiʻi so we're used to it. Anyway, I'm glad you recovered and are okay.
@@SeanShimamotothanks so much
Fun fact, the irukandji IS a box jellyfish.
Actually, they are related to the box jellyfish.
ohh that’s why I got mixed up.. I told my friend that jelly fish was the box one lol, ig close enough!!
@@jellyfish167 The term "box jellyfish" is not the name of a particular species of jellyfish, instead it is an umbrella term...it includes any and all jellyfish whose body is box-shaped...the irukandji has that box-shaped body, ergo it's a box jellyfish. It is also the smallest and most potent of all box jellyfish. To be more accurate, there are currently 51 species of box jellyfish.
Think of it like the word "tuna"...it's an umbrella term for all fishes in the tuna family. Including species like the Atlantic bluefin tuna, the pacific bluefin tuna, the yellowfin tuna, the skipjack tuna, etc. Just like box jellyfish, these different tunas vary widely in weight from just 50 pounds up to over 1,000 pounds...but also like the box jellyfish, all tunas have the same basic body shape.
Hope that helps. Aloha from Hawaiʻi! 😄🤙🏽
@@SeanShimamoto Ohhhhh thanks! I didn’t know that!
I think I'll stay surrounded by corn in the Midwest. Corn won't sting.
With that irukandji jellyfish, I think that "Yikes!" is an understatement.
Great video like always. Very educational thank you
how often is there a grain of sand crunching in your teeth after you bite your nails? lol
Thanks Jake
I enjoyed this.❤
I have a story about the Portuguese man o war (carabela portuguesa) so when I was around 11 I was at the beach with my family i see kind of bag or balloon in the sand. I tell my mother about it and she recognize it. So in her infinite wisdom she decides to pick it up using the leaves of a beach grape tree (Coccoloba uvifera) to pick it up which was a bad idea because one it was windy in that day and second she cool don’t grab the tentacles, so she got stung bad she didn’t had a allergic reaction thank god.
Bottom line, stay outta the ocean
I follow u always ur daughter is a cutie pie I am subscribed to ur channel once I actuly found a JELLY FISH.
Fun fact the Portuguese man o war is deadly and is a hydrozoan Wich means: like he said… it’s not a jellyfish its not a hydrozoan the box jelly kills 100 ppl per year irukandji is almost invisible it’s very deadly and it will give u very bad sickness and maybe death there’s a lot of kids of box jellies! And another fun fact u can eat moon jellies there actually very tasty it’s good if u have it in sushi and if u wanna see jellyfish I suggest u go to port Townsend in summer! I saw a bloom of jellyfish 🪼!
0:42 blud got enlightenment, let his intrusive thoughts win.
Still tryna find that damn jelly fish that almost killed me yo if I did I'll wipe that damn jellyfish making it extinct.
Story: so I was at the beach in Zambales (in the Philippines) and me and my family was peacefully swimming and I remember my dad carrying me and my sister to the uh the part where we cannot reach a little and then saw this jellyfish roaming around and then my dad got a lil close to it, and yes that was my first time seeing a Jellyfish. When we got back to the land, they were busy doing something like, playing, taking picture and etc and me, as a curious little dumb kid, I saw this boat that is close by, so yea I was walking in the ocean (where I can reach and the ocean is half my size while J was walking in it) so while walking it, I was getting close and close and then boom a jellyfish grabbed my legs, I was so fucking scared man to the point I slapped that damn thing so many times and yea it also stung my finger, and then it's off, and after that I ran to the land crying. Me and my fam had to go back to the house, it was a bit far away eh so ye. After we got their they wanted to pour vinegar on it, but yes as a scared little kid I didn't want to do that so yea but a few minutes later they did it just a few drop lol.
This story man, just remembering the time I was in there, just scares me man. And here I thought I'm getting a little use to it now but nvm just seeing this video makes me remind me of that on time. Just syk I have a phobia of the ocean back when I was a little, still scared but not that very scared so ye.
@@LilLottieNo.3 ok I'm not being like rude but the jelly didn't mean to do it. Most species don't have eyes or anything to be honest. I understand the pain and how scary it was but don't try and kill the jelly fish. Once again I'm not trying to rude or mean.
@@Cheese_Burger345 yea I know, jellyfishs doesn't have brain, I jsut remember that damn pain Lol, it angered me tbh, bcs I was tryna get to this both and yea it just had to get it my way, my curiosity is very very AND I MEAN VERY bad, to the point that crap leads to danger sooo yeaaa
@@LilLottieNo.3 oh it's ok lol
2:16 i bet that was extremely painful
I was stung by a sting nettle😅😅😅😅
Ive seen the lions mane jellyfish off the coast of west scotland, around 70 feet long and the body seems the size of a small car, the small moon jellyfish appear in the hundreds of thousands a few times a year
I grew up living with all these jellyfish, even nettles, i pick them up not using my hands but using coolers to transport them into my pond. Love these videos, also i dont care getting stung because i care being bitten by piranhas only
The small one and box one are a litral Real the shades 😎
We have the lion mane box jelly fish and man of War in Ireland
I think box jellyfish, and I think box jellyfish, and Irukanji jellyfish should both be in the same rank as the most dangerous jellyfish
The man of war is 4 animals.
I believe when it comes to the actual sting, the box jellyfish is number one.
But as for the most kills, the irukandji
I was stung by a man-o-war when I was a kid. Thought it was a floating bag. Boy was I wrong. Very painful
OMG BOX JELLYFISH
I got stung by a Portuguese man o war at the beach with annabell while laying on the sand at the shore 🪼
Circular lions mane jellyfish doesnt sting if it looks like a circle wing it does
Fun fact: fv family is featured in the jellyfish video
on my god fgteev
❤😂
Malo Filipina is one species of irukanji jellyfish in the Philippines
Box jellyfish are my favorite type of jellyfish
Why did box jellyfish have to migrate to the Philippines?!? I was so traumatized after getting stung by an unknown jellyfish once. One time I was swimming in the beach when all of a sudden I felt thousands of skinny long ropes and the moment I felt it, I knew it wasn’t ropes it was jellyfish stingers it was so painfull I screamed and got out of the water but yet the beach water I swam I Was very foggy and flown with sand so I couldn’t clearly see what stung me cuz the water was so un clear I then quit swimming on beaches after that incident
At lake Alexander ini saw a blue jellyfish on the shore and get this lake Alexander has never had a jellyfish I think until then so we had to move to the sea because the jellyfish was getting removed
Is that Feegee/Duddy?!
You forgot stinger Flynn!
