So sad to read what has happened in Christchurch. I was stationed in Christchurch and lived there from 1988 to 1991, and as a black gay American had a wonderful time and enjoyed the Gay spaces then of the time. Seems like Christchurch has gone backwards.
One of the reasons I was glad to leave and never look back. I don't understand choosing to live in chch if you are LGBT when life is so much easier in wellington (and I'm guessing Auckland?).
It's just a question of who is going to step up and open a place like that. If there's not anyone with the time, money, and desire to do it, it's not happening
Like everywhere in the world there is racism and homophobia, that being said New Zealand is tied with Denmark for being 4th in the world when it comes to queer-friendly travel. New Zealand is 7th in the world for racial equality behind the Nordics, Canada and the Netherlands. On a personal anecdote the rural areas of the South Island, the region of Hawkes Bay, and the region of Bay of Plenty are more conservative. Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin are my personal recommendations to say in as they are all gay friendly cities. Auckland being the 2nd most diverse city in the world and Wellington being a city with sizable rainbow communities. (Especially around Newtown and Central Wellington).
When people cannot express themselves without being met with abuse (the guy being told "get out of the road you gay c*nt" when holding hands with another guy), it is not a safe space. Queer people do not require coddling (and often do not want it), they simply want to be treated with respect as any other person would
@@alexrutter Holding hands is fkn stupid so if you want to do a pda then expectpeople to have a reaction. And you can't force assholes to not be assholes. That is what that is, too. Life is rough, stop making it more rough for yourselves on purpose just to prove a point and have a whinge.
Is a person asking for " coddling " if they just want to be free to be themselves like everyone else ? If people are expected to ( quite rightly ) work for a living and pay taxes then shouldn't they have everything that everybody else has ?
I hate that. I'm surprised that new Zealand is still so backwards.
Ahh yes Christchurch wide roads narrow minds... have you tried lyttelton it has a lovely atmosphere.
Christchurch has been like this since forever.
Move to Wellington, Dunedin or Auckland!
They shouldn't have to MOVE ! smh.
Agreed! But it's just the reality of Christchurch. I should know, I grew up there and worked in many of the bars.
@@majoritypatella2503 actually they should! I don’t believe you should make people conform to perversion
@@Kiss_lynda The real perversion is that shirt and tie policy.

What struck me was how *utterly utterly* conventional all those in those queues looked. Am in shock!!

Assuming the council would not kick up a fuss about the licence. I know Westminster and other councils in London have been doing that for years.

Am a French lesbian who visited Christchurch 20 years ago for a few days and hated it 😶
is that because you're a lesbian or because you're french though? lol
@@KahurangiSteez just too proper of a town 😬but absolutely loved Aotearoa

Isn't just walking around like everyone else a 'safe space'? Why do you require coddling?
