The Jam were huge in the UK and I grew up hearing their songs on the radio. They initially hitched a ride on the punk bandwagon but branched out into wider musical territory. The lyrics always had something to say.
Amen. The lyrics just cut to the bone. "To either cut down on beer, or the kids new gear. It's a big decision in a town called malice." Many of us know that feeling.
Ahh, having been born in Woking (The Jam’s hometown) I see this as the anthem for the town. The story of dull suburban life in a London commuter town. Set to a Stax/Motown rhythm. The sort of place where dreams don’t come true and life happens elsewhere. Love it.
Just came across your reaction and stopped to listen. Great pick. Weller never wanted to be punk as his roots were firmly in the Northern Soul and 60's Mod bands. His work with the Style Council and his Solo output have left us some great music and he's still making top ten albums.First time i heard them was in 77 and was impressed. Off to hear more of your reactions
The Jam were a great band that bridged the punk and new wave movements. This is actually a later song in the band's career. I agree that Down In The Tube Station at Midnight or This Is The Modern World and earlier songs would be good to listen to.

Try Down In The Tube Station At Midnight
More reaction needed from these guys The Jam were original and unique.😊
Down in the tube station at midnight or That's entertainment will give you a better feel for The Jam
Hands down my favorite song of all time. I still have my original 45!
The songwriter guitarist singer Paul weller is a legend and one of the most versatile songwriters ever .. he has done it all
This is music for 'MODS', bloody excellent, three cheers to you thanks
Their cover of "David Watts" by The Kinks is exceptional. The Jam were pretty great.
Best ever track never fails to get my blood flowing
I recommend listening to the lyrics more?
Good on ya guys. A huge Tamla influenced Jam song. Upbeat rhythm and groove...with observational lyrics of a deadbeat town.
One of the best MOD bands ever 🇬🇧

How's the word Motown didn't come out of your is absolutely baffling! This song screams Motown!
Jam -Travelling away + pubs
The song also riffs on the Neville Shute book (and later film) "A Town Called Alice", which is Alice Springs in the dry heart of Australia.
Weller - Wild Wood!
great track.

Punk meets Motown.
Spot on.
Do some SKA, the Specials (Ghost Town) or some fun SKA with Madness (Baggy Trousers) ...
It was used in the movie Billy Elliot.

Ouch! Will do better next time.😇
Where do people grow up, where you don't have the one-off friends into disparate good bands?
You know nothing about the Jam!....
Agreed, only heard of them last month. Fill us in please?
