I was at a Catholic high school from 84-88/9 and 'corporal punishment' then was the norm. In our school they would basically frog march you down to the tutor room and then they had to grab another teacher to witness it and sign off in the log book, and we all had to put our signatures to it so it was done in like a formal way, and especially so in our school as Mr Harris the school alcoholic teacher had previously broken a kids wrist from strapping him. When I say strap I don't mean a thin belt size strap, a mean it was a piece of leather about half an inch thick that had been folded over so it was about an inch think and a about and in a half wide and it basically felt like being hit by a solid lump of wood, not a stingy strap. And your hand instantly throbbed with how hard they enjoyed doing it. And prior to strapping us the teacher in question, usually 'biff' the pe teacher meat head who was chief strapping teacher, would have a couple of practice goes first onto the table just to make a really loud noise to probably add to the trauma and make you aware of what was coming. Then you'd either get 2 blasts on one hand or 2 on each if they'd deemed you'd been particularly whatever got them wanting to do violence on you that day, and yes it hurt, a lot and after the first blow your mind was only thinking wow, and that was just the first one. And in our school this was considered normal. However if it did work we wouldn't keep ending up back there rather taking a a detention or whatever else, cause at least then it was dealt with and that's eventually the mentality you had. You got desensitised to it and it became like a badge of honor how many times you'd been strapped, so obviously completely ineffective. At the local CofE high school they had recently done away with corporal punishment but at the Catholic one I went to down the road it was still a thing. I've no idea how long that was still a thing for after I left. But it certainly didn't give us a positive outlook on education so that we would just be so glad to have left school we'd take almost any job and consider it better than carrying on with 'education'. So I chose being an apprentice mechanic, and was just glad I'd got the horrible experience of school out of the way. Of course now school kids are not allowed to be put through physical and psychological trauma (at least by the teachers). And I grew up in basically the next city 25-30 miles north of Manchester so im sure they had a very similar experience there, especially in the Catholic schools. Now when I look back, and especially after having children of my own go through the entire education system without all that I find it hard to fathom why we all just accepted it and so did our parents who would always defer to the teachers must have a good reason blah blah. Because there is no way I'd have accepted a teacher physically abusing my child, especially as parents we had agreed on our children never being physically smacked about. So I wouldn't have accepted a teacher to assume that right. But like I said even as recently as the late 80s it was an accepted, perfectly normal aspect of being a school kid for me.

Really interesting song to use for first listen of this band. From a choice of six albums, your first listen could have gone in so many different directions. If you do another try Beautiful People or Kick in the Teeth

Pay attention to the lyrics. There's quite a philosophical message to the song and it usually takes a few listens to catch what Steve is saying. Largely, it's about how sometimes the seeming futility of life makes it feel like it is leading you in circles and leaves you feeling lost. Great words that Steve hides in a melody that fools you into missing the message.

I'm a little late to the show but the style of guitar you mentioned in the start of the video is called Fingerstyle! Fingerstyle differs from playing with a pick because instead of using a guitar pick to pluck the strings, you pluck them with each of your 5 fingers. It's super tough to learn but can be incredibly rewarding.

The suits are part of the mod culture that was ( and still around) in the 60s..They followed bands like the Who,kinks,soul..etc..And wore sharp clothing..Apposed to their enemy The Rockers...Many violent clashes took place between rival factions especially at seaside resorts in the 60s when rival factions would visit on Bank Holiday weekends...Try and check out the film Quadrophenia ..The who done the soundtrack & the film is a great insight Into mod culture..👍
