This popped up in my feed. I grew up in Gomshall and it is a stunningly beautiful area to walk. The concrete tanks above Shere are WW2 vintage. Emergency Firefighting Water Tanks. The area was used to store munitions in the run-up to D-Day
Good to hear. Lots of great hiking/running trails in the Surrey Hills. Granted, nothing like up north but they are still enjoyable (and easier...lol) Thanks for watching
Thanks CJ, you’re definitely my go to channel when planning adventures. However, check out the St. James’ Way which is Reading to Southampton and the official English Camino pilgrimage route.
I have been to St Martha’s church and Newlands Corner many times. Went for the first time to Reigate Hill, Queens Park and Colley Hill today. That’s also on the North Downs Way and was breathtaking. Really great to see you video and parts I’ve not visited before.
I hiked the North Downs Way straight after lockdown last year. Loved the hikes. A memorable experience. Met some wonderful people on route too who also were doing the national trail.
I am not sure how I missed this but I started with day 2 and then watched day 1. Cool journeys. Hexagonal stepping stones reminded of the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim.
Evening CJ, smashing trail and some familiar turf for us, feels very homely and is really something special. Really enjoyed this, as always your videos pack alot of bang for their buck! Haha totally with you on golf, what is the point? Someone once said, golf is a good walk ruined 😬🤭👍 stay safe and well, Ceri and Kat ❤👍🤗
Thanks guys...I always find it nice to see places I know on other people's videos so glad you enjoyed it :-) I'd heard that phrase about golf before but forgotten it...it's a good one. Thanks for watching as always guys. Take care
Saw your latest vid went live … I needed to start from the beginning lol .. I’m so behind from being out in Corfu with crappy wifi 😃 I haven’t seen much of this trail so looking fwd to the series x
Well by the time you get to watching the entire North Downs Way series the last two videos for the trail will be live. Appreciate you watching. I've still got a lot to catch up on with your channel too...looking forward to the EHW videos :-) And hope to sit down this weekend and watch Corfu.
Wicked Cj wot an awesome stretch of walk-in this is on hot sunny days and good to ride also great video and information to for those that dnt know it thanks for sharing
Great video. the dogs are looking great. What are their names? Having played golf before, I would agree with the famous saying in that golf is just a good walk ruined. Have a great day 😀
Thank you. I do introduce them a little better in the next few videos but the spotty one is Cody and he just turned 13. The other one, with all the excitement and really waggy tail is Kye.
Another beautiful and informative walk :D the caterpilar was a pale tussock moth caterpillar, I once found one just outside my window. I took some close up photos and enlarged them, I have to say that when seen enlarged thery have one of the most terrifying mouths in nature! Now off to watch part 2 and 3
You walked through a lot of familiar places to me on this one. I grew up near the church on the hill, and visited a little while ago to camp near the chantry wood out on the hillside. Good luck for the rest of your hike. ATB Dan
Love the NDW and really enjoyed yr videos... Looking fwd to your onward journey - later this year? In particular to see how you find the stretch after Detling :-)
Thank you. I was supposed to finish it over Easter but a nasty cough and cold had other ideas. So will be hopefully finishing it up in June over the Jubilee weekend.
Yay, the doggos are back - and travelling light! As Julie, my wife says, the great thing about dogs is their default setting is ‘happy’! Not sure what the tanks in the wood were, but there are some remains in some woods near me and their use was associated with the dyemaking industry. Long since disused and barely visible unless you know where to look, they are known colloquially as ‘the chemical tanks’. Tanning is another industry that might require something of the sort.
14:00 I hiked the NDW last week and actually found they'd re-done the path in this part. It had always been a nightmare but when I went through this time it seemed like fresh packed dirt
The video is very interesting . I think you should have stop in Guildford on the frist day . I would have been worrying about your dogs as you a passing them too hard
Hi CJ - Lovely video. I am hoping to do some of this trail sometimes soon. How did you find the possibilities for wild tent camping (although I know you car camped).
Lots of options for wild camping along the first half...way more and better stealth camping options on this so far than the South Downs Way which is a lot more open. The forest helps to provide lots of wild camp options.
@@WilderhopeAdventures I look forward to watching all the future episodes, I'll be with you in spirit all the way. You may prefer these longer walks but I used to do circular daily ones around Westerham where there are many interesting things to see, for instance the tower folly ruins, caves and a garden furniture set for walkers to use which has been there at least 10 years.
@@njuham I do short walks too...especially if they involve folly ruins and caves and other interesting things. Would love to know the route you takw for that walk if you have time to email it to me.

Thanks for good walking narrative and splendid dogs. They're wonderful.
I'm glad it comes across okay...really appreciate hearing that. I will pass your compliments on to the pups :-)
I love both the visual treat of your videos and the historical background that you provide...thank you for both 💕
Awe, that's lovely to hear. Thank you for such lovely feedback...means a lot. Hope you have a great weekend

Glad you enjoyed them...really trying to finish the NDW this year but an unwell dog has limited my ability to get out and finish it.
@@WilderhopeAdventures Hope your dog will be ok. They really make the videos great. We have a miniature schnauzer and not do obedient as your 2 😂
Ohh I remember that sand! Still don't know how that got there 😆 nice video 👌
I know just the sand you mean!
I hiked the North Downs Way straight after lockdown last year. Loved the hikes. A memorable experience. Met some wonderful people on route too who also were doing the national trail.
I definitely found it more enjoyable than the SDW. I'm hoping to finish it up at the end of March

I know what you mean about the stepping stones. I think the same thing when crossing them

Awesome. Surrey is very beautiful. ATB. Grays
Thank you. It is quite the pretty county
Great vid! I ran the North Downs Way 50 mile race this year and it was a real blast. Nice to hear the historical info behind the various areas
Thank you. I hope to get it finished up in 2022...it's bugging me that I haven't hiked the whole thing yet
Nice, been waiting for the North Downs Way videos. :)
Sadly the series is currently incomplete but will be finishing it up this year. Glad you enjoyed

Lovely video and I love your dogs, they look so happy. I don't suppose you noticed if St Martha's still has a working tap, did you?
Thank you. I will pass your comments on to them :-)
The tap was working the last time I was at St Martha's church but it's been a few months

Por favor, necesitamos subtítulos en español, gracias.
Lo siento. I have no idea how to do subtítulos en español. I think that is a UA-cam thing.
21;05, may be a world war 2 anti-aircraft battery.
Good to know :-)
Nice one! North Downs is vastly superior to South Downs!
Thank you. I tend to agree with you on that one

I think at 20.45 you hit upon a second world war anti aircraft defence.
