- Painting Under Hood Insulation.
This is how I paint the under side of my hoods.
It’s easy and quick, and makes a huge difference.
I apologize for my hands being in the frame. I have a GoPro ordered so I can do a better job.

Another awesome tutorial! With a spray can you can also spray onto wax paper then dip your brush in for touch up! Thanks 👍
I've never thought about doing it on wax paper. That's a great tip. I will pin this to the top of the comments. Thank you for watching.
Thanks You Nice tip
thats red neck style from the great state fl.
yes i've done that on cardboard it soaks in a great idea i will try that thanks i'm s.s. so cheap is the way to go thanks mark i mean grandpa
Found your channel and Im hooked on all your tutorials. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. I'm going to be starting an AMT Chevelle Pro Street so I'll have a few more soon.
Thank you for the tip/help. 👍🇨🇦👍.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching.
What a great tutorial. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thank you very much, and thanks for watching.
Awesome, thank you. Those fine details make all the difference. I love it.
Thanks for watching. I try and add as much details as I can with out spending any extra. The small things make a lot of difference.
Just came across your channel. You’re posting some great stuff. Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I'll try.
Nice tutorial. Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Hope it helps.
Very cool 👍 thanks for sharing
Thank you very much. I hope my videos will help, or at least amuse.
Nice camouflage! Looks like the felt insulation. I used carpet felt and white glue. This looks a lot neater and easier.
Thanks for watching. It is very quick and easy. I was at a hobby shop way back in the 70s when I watched an old guy (probably my age) do this, and it's the only way I've done it since. I also do the interior carpet about the same way. I'll do a video on that when I get to that part of the build I'm doing.
It is. A heck of a lot quicker too.
On many models I use the paper towel (with a smaller texture) itself to replicate trunk insulation. Once it's cut-to-fit it's secured in place with white glue, then painted black or brown. Initially, that's what I thought I was going to see here. Your way works well too.
I like doing trunks and things like that with paper towels. For the hoods I like to paint them so they stay smooth since they would be tucked into the hood frame.
@@grandpamarkshobbies Oops! Sorry, I'm an idiot..... I JUST NOW realized your video says, ".....hood insulation." Yes, for hoods....something "thinner & smoother" is best.
LOL. you are not an idiot. That is a good idea. I was thinking about it last night, and if you soaked the paper towel in glue and put it in place, then burnished the edges I think it would look GREAT.
@@grandpamarkshobbies HA! Thanks.
Thanks for getting the old brain moving. LOL
Thank you for share this tutorial. 👍
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
For texture I carefully paint in the black, then I brush on (Elmers) glue and sprinkle flocking material. Now it's black and feels like cloth.
I haven't gotten into flocking yet. I really enjoy hand painting, so this is still a bunch of fun for me.
At first, I wasn't sure that would turn out, but I was wrong. It looks good! I have a 1970 Cougar with a weird pattern under the hood. I'll have to think on that one. Thanks for this video!
I've been using this technique for a very long time. It sure looks great. I have to admit, it even looks better in person. When you give it a try please let me know how it comes out.
I will let you know.
Thanks
For less than $5 you can buy enough material to make 100 tea bags. Looking at the stuff and thinking about under hood insulation I've seen in the past, that material could work. Put it in place and wash it with black acrylic paint. I'm sure your way is best, but I can't resist daydreaming.
Now that is a very cool idea. I may be trying that one sometime in the future.
Spend some time masking off the underhood metal using small pieces of masking tape. This takes a little time.
Then using faux or textured spray paint (usually flat black) simply spray light coats and the results are amazingly real!
A nice clean even texture. Faux available thru ebay and textured available at Hobby Lobby (chalk) or Lowe's. Just another idea.
Oh yeah, paint the hood's metal color first then the insulation! For better separation mask off the insulation area prior to hood color
then do the above masking/painting.
I've never tried that before. I'll have to check it out. I do this method because I have the stuff on hand. LOL. Have a great day, and thanks for watching.
Great tutorial! Just found you, subd!
Thank you very much, and welcome to the channel. I also have a Facebook page if you want to jump in.
Nice technique. Like the Waco Kid reference at the end.
Thanks for watching. We use that reference at work all the time.
dam that looks good no thats not right looks great thank you mark
Thank you very much.
whoi'm i kidding my father said i never amount to noting thing he was right he was dead on thank you grandpa you should be a d.j. you do great work on that hood it just transform right in front of me that was wonderful paint job oh by the way thank you for the help we gave it a great try
You know I had a teacher that told me that I wouldn't amount to anything. That just made me go out of my way to prove her wrong. Last thing you should be doing is thinking that way. There is something in everyone that they can do better than anyone else on this earth. You just have to find what you like to do and keep doing it until it's the best you can do. There's awesomeness in everyone. Everyone.
Awesome tips , Thanks...New Sub....😁😁😁😁😁
Thank you very much. I'm going to try and have one a week as long as people want to watch.
Great tutorial.
Thank you very much. I just checked out your page, and gave you a sub. Very cool info. Will be watching all of them soon.
@@grandpamarkshobbies thank you, I appreciate that.
Just here to help. Have a great weekend.
love to hear from you grandpa
Were you able to find me on Facebook?

Yes it is.
Haven't heard from you in a few days. How are you doing?
no i never try
thank you
You're welcome
@@grandpamarkshobbies your a good man
So are you. Don't ever forget it.
it dosing matter how long your wiring video was it was a great video thank you
Honestly I had no idea that the wiring video was going to do as well as it has just because of the length. I'm almost to the point of doing the plugs on a 396 and am going to make a quick video almost like cliff notes on how I do it. Just to give more options. Thanks a bunch for watching.
i never had a grandpa or grandma they both passed away before i was born i have one now at 62 yrs old thanks mark your mine
@@grandpamarkshobbies i have the shakes my self it sad when the left hand dosed know what right hand is doing and vise verse
This has to be the kindest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you very much and I'm truly flattered.
I understand. The best days are when the right and left hands are shaking in sync and I can paint a straight line. LOL.
Very cool.... the second of your vids that I've learned from this AM. Although not directly related... like most viewers I've used the flocking powder...but man is it messy. I haven't done it yet but I'm curious about using other common household 'powders' like salt, sugar, some seasonings... obviously will require spray painting.. but curious if anybody has a formula.
I've moved away from the flocking. It just makes way too much of a mess for me. That's why I started stippling the felt and carpets. You have to watch salt, it will eat your paint. I've used salt as a weathering on airplanes and it WILL give you a good weathering effect, but you wouldn't want to leave it on.
@@grandpamarkshobbies Yike!... I completely forgot about that. duh. I do some armor but haven't used salt for weathering. Thanks for heading off that idea. I've used baking soda to 'gum up' paint for the purpose of mud, dirt, etc... but it's too fine for texture. Maybe sugar. Thanks again for all the intel.
I've tried sugar before, but when it hits the glue it melts and smooths out. I've used white grout for snow that I mixed with Mog Podge. I thought it was very convincing.
Howdy 🤠👍
Howdy!!!
I like useing tamiya lacquer spry paint but in fl. in the summer time that's a no no enamel I have a hard time working with to so in your mind what would be best
In that high humidity I think I'd try an acrylic paint of some kind. It seems to work best, but you still have to watch, it takes much longer for it to harden. Instead of a day or so I would go about a week and a half.
i guess i'll to wait for winter thank you grandpa
I've done that too.
That is a nice Orange👍 is it a rattle can brand?
T.Y
Thank you. That is Tamiya's X-6 jar paint that I airbrushed with a Harbor Freight airbrush.
ha ... " this ones gotta little tighter package in the front." ... wayment
Thank you for watching.

Glad to see you are back on line.

@@grandpamarkshobbies I just found your channel this morning. Great stuff Sir! 😎
I seriously appreciate it.
you sound like that guy from pbs joy painting
That's funny as heck. I made a remark last night in the video that's coming out this coming Monday.
@@grandpamarkshobbies mark i'm going to try to make a spray booth out of card -board any thoughts on it please let me know thanks we will have coffee soon
you speak really soft like him or you could be a radio announcer
I'm not sure about Card-Board, but I made one out of a large plastic tote that I got at Home Depot. I put the largest bathroom fan I could find on the bottom, and put a filter inside with duct tape. Set it on it's side, and bingo it's a spray booth. I'm going to put an LED can light in it this weekend so I have a ton of light. I'll post pictures on the Revell page on Facebook when I finish this weekend.
Thank you.
lets have coffee mark
I can do coffee. Let me know where. LOL

No, that's not it, I'm in and out of the office all day. I'm only on the computer for maybe 2 minutes. I'll be home tonight after 8. Look for me then.

Give them a call. They get paid to help.
i'll let you go for now maybe later
Just checked back in. I'm at work right now, so I'm running in and out a LOT. It's been a crazy few days, and I'm playing catch up. Still making time to get some work done on the Camaro, but not as much as I'd like.
i'm a fuck up
No! No body is.
@@grandpamarkshobbies i try to get hold you on your Gmail
I think the best thing you can do is write me an email and tell me what's up. Then when I get it I can respond. It's just not working this way.
