That workshop has seen more changes than Debenham's changing room! 🤣

Each clip is nicely framed, and the transitions highlight tue framing.

Bet that feels like a luxury having so much more workspace now.
I made myself a second sort of assembly/ painting staining bench and my god I don’t know how I managed without it before. Felt like such an upgrade.

I think your mobile cart would have worked well if you had the room to access all sides but being against the wall wasn't as great a use. I think your new bench will fit the space really well!

That should be a lot better for working on Matt, there's always a trade-off in a small space between flexibility/mobility and solidity, but you sometimes have to try different options to really know what will work for you ! The question is will you have the discipline to keep the surface clear, I know I wouldn't ! 😉

Now that’s a bench. I built one like it. 6” top. Solid as a rock.

Solid workbench Matt. In my workshop I took out the fixed workbench and built a new one from 3x2’s, doubled on the legs, so its really solid and heavy. Copied the lifting castors idea from Proper DIY so I can have the bench on its feet when I need total stability but can push the castors down if I need to move it around. Horses for courses; no single best answer

It'll be cool to see how you develop this bench and your workflow with it. Always nice to see how people get by in our size of workshops. Cheers and thanks for sharing.

I made a standard English carpenter's work bench from plans from rex kruger. It's got retractable casters so I can wheel it around and put it down firmly as required. Works great. Having a movable bench is a great asset.

Wood movement ?? those 3x2 will twist and check in no time as they contain the pith. if you need to use readily avilable timber glue the long edges for a much more substantial worktop that will be less likely to twist or buy 2 x 12's and rip them down to 3x2's while removing the pith.

Now thats a solid, functional bench. Nothing wrong with the first one, just all part of the evolution: do, review, learn and apply/improve 😊

@@Badgerworkshop I copied the Sjoberg style 'cos I couldn't afford to buy. They are quite lightweight even with a cabinet. I didn't want to bolt to the floor for some reason.

Really interesting. When i look at other people who make benches out of 2 x 4 or 2 x 3 they plane them down and mill them so they are square for glue up etc. Its given me an idea as i am in the throws of putting shelves up in my garage with 1.5 x 3. Good video keep them coming.

Hi Matt, Looks good and I am a fan of the fixed workbench or a fixed island workbench.
I have three fixed workbenches in my workshop. At the end of the day the workshop is always evolving, next week you might alter it and in 4 years time change it again and the same in 10 years time. The workshop give you a freedom of mind and the freedom to change. You have made a great workbench and is very solid and made good use of a tight space by the door. As always a great workshop project Take care

Brilliant! High concept, relatively low tech, and your space is maximized. I will be doing something just like this when my shop-studio-potting shed is done later this summer. Thanks for the inspiration as always. 🇨🇦

I have a small fixed bench and a small mobile bench. However, the mobile bench never gets moved as I find it works best in one position. Nice bit of lateral thinking regarding the tapering section of the bench. 👍

The ability to move is useful but there is nothing worse than trying to carry out an operation (that may potentially involve dangerous tools) when your bench is moving about. Out of interest to you still have your router table, haven't seen it used for a while?
