    When I was in Primary School in the 1960's my father used tin foil as a temporary fix for a blown fuse.
    The 6 Amp Lighting fuse was the most prone to blowing and when I got my own house in Maynooth the situation didn't change. However rather than using tinfoil I invested in a box of 6 Amp fuses.
    When I got the house rewired about 5 years ago I replaced the fuses with an RCD Box.

      I am 44 years old and I don't think I have ever witnessed a fuse blowing for no reason. Are you living somewhere in tropical third world? Alabama perhaps?

    Hey, Uni.....if people are breaking in in the middle of the night to get shovels, it might be best to leave them alone. They clearly have an urgent task in the woods that you don't want to interrupt. ;-)

    I have the Dupont Pins to Banana Plugs. They only have 8" leads on them, so they sort of ended up being useless. From what I ordered, I can understand that they would be handy, with longer leads. So, a DIY set is likely... Cheers!

    • @uni-byte
      @uni-byte  2 місяці тому

      These ones are 12" tip to tip, so the wire is about 10". They will come in handy, but I'm guessing I'll be wanting longer ones for some applications. My banana plug ones have not yet arrived, but I guessing the wire will be even shorted - more like the 8" your are. I contacted Cleqee (sp?) about longer ones and they said they didn't have them. I suggested they think about it. The DIY custom route sounds more productive though..

      @@uni-byte Thanks for your reply! I had a look at mine and, yes, my banana type are longer than I thought - more like 10-12", tip to tip, as you say. When they arrived, I used them some with my breadboard and it was clear they were too short. I have two sets of five colors. I broke down one set, this morning, and cut some nice wire to 28". That will be long enough to reach from the center of my bench to the farthermost piece of test gear. I will crimp on new Dupont Connectors and solder on the banana connectors. All good fun = better test gear. And, the short set can still be used with handheld test gear. Cheers!

    Nice bunch of goodies!
    When you set all the gauges on your bench I had a thought...
    Why not use them both? It looks like you will have room, then all the guesswork is taken away.
    😁
    Just another idea for you.

    Well, I'd certainly like to see a video showing the insides of your dc load/battery capacity tester. Also, I am very fond of analogue meters, unless ultra-high precision is required, so I say go with those.

    Digital and analog V&A will fit if you the knob down, add a switch to alternate between A/D

    I don't blame you, have the same itch, and it all started innocent when
    i wanted to retro fit usb-power for bunch of audio equipment
    that leaded me to a rabitt-hole of other curiosity .
    Now my attic have several of those IP65 suitcases filled with goodies from China, and due to posting , its better to order in bulks or making a long shopping list , or else they use economic shipping and your package take months to arrive or they get lost.
    11:30 You know all the plastic i got from my packages, i was serious consider buying a plastic shredder and a plastic melter/oven to create plastic stuff, wonder how well that will work.

    • @uni-byte
      @uni-byte  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, I buy a lot of this stuff just out of interest sake just to play with and investigate. Never know what ideas come out of such activity. I also buy a lot just to have on hand for projects/experiments I've got in mind. Keeps my mind busy.
      On your plastics idea, give it a try!

    Analogue meters are cool, in some cases an advantage like when a value is fluctuating. I've been considering getting some, but I am confused about the need for shunt resistors: they have shunt resistors for high values (>10A), but none for low values. It will be good to see one put into use for a maximum value I would need. Thanks. Take care.

    • @uni-byte
      @uni-byte  2 місяці тому

      All the meters that take shunts from a given manufacturer have the same internals but different scales. You just buy the appropriate shunt to go with the meter you want. So, if you buy XYZ company's 50A meter, you also buy their 50A shunt.

    I've been looking for a transformer for the same linear PSU kit on and off for a while. The cost of a sufficiently large transformer and then shipping makes me want to just buy a whole linear PSU from Amazon... Every now and then I consider getting free or cheap (dead, "for parts") AV receivers on Facebook Marketplace or similar but I just don't know what I'm looking for. Are AV receivers transformers 24V? High enough VA?
    Have you considered salvage?

    • @uni-byte
      @uni-byte  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, transformers have increased in price faster than any other component. I have considered salvage but it never seems to be available to me as I have to get everything shipped in to where I am. The last video I did, on the little DC load, has a salvaged transformer in it.
