This is my first time playing a Yamaha Revstar. Being a lefty, it wasn't an option until now. Thanks to Sky Music for the loan of this guitar. You can check it out using the links below. Please let me know what you think of these guitars. This particular one, is fantastic.

Bought this guitar a couple of months ago for 300 usd. The string height was sky high when I received it, but after a quick setup it is brilliant. The neck is perfectly smooth. I would say it even surpasses my American strat in playability. The only negative is that the Yamaha sets the bar, and makes it hard to justify buying expensive guitar 😜

FWIW I have the Blue RSS20L its a lovely guitar. In my experience I don't like the push pull pot on mine, it feels a little fragile & theres a slight wobble on it. And the passive boost doesn't do much for me but others seem to like it. The neck is lovely and the fretwire is stainless so it should last a while! Everything Shane said about finish and build quality applies to mine too. Its probably my favourite guitar to play, although I typically prefer single coils so ... yes a P90 version would be the ultimate left handed revstar :)

Revstars are very underrated, the build is quality, playability and tone is just there, and I mean right up there. Now you just have to give the P90 version a try, it will put another smile your face. No tuning issues with my Gen 1, 502T.

Good to see the left handed version reviewed! I'm not really in the market for one but the GAS is strong. I'm going to guess that a bit of a set up would fix the tuning issues and what you are experiencing is the less then perfect set up provided by a right handed factory set up person. It's no surprise to me that "all" the left handed players I know are better at setting up their guitars than the local shops.

  • @icu469

Sounds really good. Nice playing. The G string keeps going out of tune is most likely a problem with the nut. This is a common problem with guitars where the strings don't go straight out to the tuners, where they go off at an angle, you have to file the tuner side of the string slot on the nut.

Great for gigs, however I am partial to my PRS SE Standard which I keep in the studio 🎙 because it's much heavier. The Yamaha is a great grab and go guitar available in 5 different colors 👌. It is reviews from folks I respect their opinion immensely on, and you are one of those, that made me go to great extents to get a Standard in Flash Green. NO ONE in the States has them in stock yet, even Yamaha's biggest dealer, Sweetwater. I had to have a friend up north buy one from a shop near him, then sell it to me. I think the Standard is the perfect bang for the buck level here. It is exactly the same as Pro level except without the 2 graphite rods around the bridge and no hard case. Same hardware, pickups, binding etc.
The Flash Green with strips is just gorgeous, and I generally dislike green guitars. On my Standard, it is perfect, except the nut and the dime sized pots. I think it's cut too deep. Not a horrible amount, but could be better. Easy enough to rectify. Tuners worked fine, but I did drop some Grover Locking in just because I prefer locking tuners.
The Pickups in the Standard and Pro, are just very very nice. For stock pickups they are amazing. They standup to some of my custom wounds Suffice it to say, Yamaha alleges they went through 100 different pickups/designs until these. And that might be it, that they are just perfectly matched for the guitar. I widh they had the High passs instead of the Focus. It boosts and cuts off the high end, like a tone roll-off, but not quite. Oh it's useable (Set an amp for light breakup, roll bridge back to edge, then engage, and oh mama).

Nice demo. I'm thinking of getting the Element. I had the earlier iteration of this Revstar but the reason I sold it was because it was too heavy and had no contours. I need a belly and arm cutaway to really feel comfortable with any guitar. I never had any tuning issues with my Revstar but I wasn't crazy about the Elixir strings that came stock. They were just too harsh in feel and tone. I prefer Ernie Ball or D'Addario, usually 9-42 or 10-46 XL.

Man- I was just about to pull the trigger on one of these- and then you said the magic word- "intonation". That could be it just needing a good setup- like you said, which is more about where you buy it than the guitar itself, I guess. Or- it could be a thing- I guess I need to watch some more reviews. Yamaha doesn't score very big on the customer service portion of the test when you look at reviews online. I'm starting to lean back toward the Ibanez SP3 Kiko what's-his-name signature series. As you can tell, I'm not a Kiko fan really- I mean he's great and an amazing player but- I don't even know his last name- plays for Mega Death- it's a shredder. A super Strat- as they call it- which I've never owned before, but always wanted. I've got 2 Strats already- and the Epi LP- so if I had a Super Strat- I would kind of have it covered. You talked me into it- Super Strat it is- alrighty then- good talk. I'll probably be single Saturday after it arrives, but I'd rather have the guitar so- whatever. She'll go buy some more shoes and get over it- watch, I can't get rid of her.

As far as i have been able to gather their are different Caps used under the bonnet. Do you think you'll be investing in one? If you can Shane the next model up's a bit more expensiv but they are a nicer looking Guitar simply because of the Bar inlays. The pull/push knob i found was very suttle but the change can be heard. I'm glad i bought mine. I would have liked the older Yamaha SG but they are hard to find in a left hand configuration and way over 2 grand. @@martinq1920 hi Martin, I am not sure about the specs on your Strats neck for comparison purposes, however can tell you this. I have an Ultra Strat and a LP Standard. The neck width of my Revstar is narrower that that of my Strat or LP at the nut, by quite a bit in relative terms. At the 12 fret they are all more or less the same width and at the 22nd fret the Revstar is Wider. In terms of depth, the ultra is much thinner than your neck i would presume. The Revstar sits comfortably in the middle between that of my LP and Strat. Def not as chunky as the LP. The matte finish on the Revstar makes the neck silky smooth and its very comfortable to play. I do not have the biggest hands and have no issues. Having said that, if you can I would recommend you try playing one before you buy to see if it works for you. Hope that gives you some insight.

@@martinq1920 another thing worth mentioning is the scale length of the Revstar (24 3/4") vs the Strat (25 1/2). The revstar has the same scale length as the LP. I know what you mean when it comes to the shape. Similar to you it grew on me very quickly. I wanted the burst at first but when i looked at them hanging side by side the Merlot just stood out. Happy hunting.

I have one of these in the Surf Blue. It's a great guitar except for a couple of things. I'm not a fan of the 3 way switch they've used. I would have much preferred a Les Paul style switch. The other thing is the lack of individual volume controls for each pickup.
I know these might be nitpicks, but initially I thought this was a great guitar. However, now the more I think about it the more I'm starting to lose my enthusiasm. I might look into modifying it or just maybe as time goes on I might adjust to it.

This looks like a pretty good SG alternative. A variation on a tried and true formula of specs. Sounded great.
Regarding filming black guitars, you can get away with a white guitar in front of a white shirt, but a black guitar will disappear in front of a dark coloured top. I think it would be a good idea to contrast your wardrobe to the guitars to ensure they stand out on screen.

A minor gripe is that they don't seem to release many (any) 24 fret instruments these days. Not a deal-breaker but I do like the 2 extra.....and I think this would roar with some hot P90s in!

Hi Shane. Do you still publish Pod Casts? If so where can I find them. The last one I see on Apple Podcasts is from 15 March 2021 titled The best and worst music gear of 2021.

A silly question from someone new to electric guitar (me): how do you adjust the neck of the Revstar and the other set-neck guitars with no truss rod if they bend overtime? Or do you just pray the neck doesn't bend and only adjust the action via bridge/saddle?

    • @DanCeese
      @DanCeese Рік тому

Whoops, nvm! I just found out the Revstar still has a truss rod!

Found extremely bright! But it might be the amp setting cause heard on other reviews that it sounded very warm 🤔

I had a Revstar P90's which was very well built, a bit on the heavy side and the pickups on single notes sounded great. However chords didn't sound good as the overtones didn't sound musical - don't know the cause. Changed to a Les Paul special and although the pickups were darker chords sounded right!

Shane, can you comment on the width of the guitar(lower bout)? It looks wider than a Les Paul.

That Artist Tweed seems pretty versatile too Shane, nice cleans & barks when you want it to... Anyone know how much & they'll keep up with a drummer?

    • @intheblues

I used the Tweed Tone 20 live all of the time. It's good up till about moderately loud. Due to the cabinet size, it's a bigger sound than a Blues Junior.

@@intheblues lve got the Supro BK12 15w.. the cleans are ok, but not sparkly like ld expect from a class A with 6L6...& it really needs cranking to drive (it doesn't get louder, just fizzier) I'll have a look at the Artist..l was trying to get a Bugera v22, but can't find one anywhere.
Thanks for your work Shane, l enjoy the channel.

Which Les Paul in particular? It's every bit as good or better than most Epiphone Les Paul guitars at the higher end of their series.

@@intheblues Awesome. Tonally, does it have that thick, mid forward Les Paul vibe? My very specific situation is, do you think it's worth selling my Gibson Les Paul studio to get the Standard (the model one up)?

They're nice guitars, the Revstars. You should try the Standard though. IMO a step up well worth the money.
