Thank you CMI for the brilliant idea of arranging this lecture (lecdem) series. Carnatic Music (musicians) are known for (notorious for?!) mixing math and music and I started listening with the apprehension whether this would be one more attempt at force-fit math and music or get into the intricacies of their connection. But it turned out that my misgivings were entirely unwarranted. TMK has done a great job of simplifying for the layman like me various elements of CM. While doing so, he has chosen not to take the easy route and fall back on analogies and parallels for explaining some concepts which is commendable and at the same time rather difficult. His lucid exposition, interspersed with personal opinions (with a charming disclaimer to that effect) and spiced with apt demos was very informative and insightful. It provides a wonderful template for such lectures in the future. His style of setting up a discussion with an opening question reminded me of his school (KFI) and its inspiration, philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurthy. Idk how CMI came to organise this lecture series and wished I was a Chennai resident (temporarily!) and had a chance to attend these three weekend lectures.
