- Twelve O'Clock High is an American drama series set in World War II. This TV series originally broadcast on ABC-TV for two-and-one-half TV seasons from September 18, 1964, through January 13, 1967; was based on the motion picture Twelve O'Clock High (1949).
I grew up with B&W tv programs, as was most of this program was aired. It was a pleasure to watch this colorized version of this program.
The interesting thing about this episode is that Eduard Franz---a fine character actor---actually played von Stauffenberg in "The Desert Fox," the fine film about Rommel that starred James Mason.
Deep and Classic TV Episode! Thank you.
Aircraft close up is a BF - 109 G ,Gustav , showing the Adolf " Galland Hood" . As it was called . Thank you .
gotta love that theme song as well
Colonel Gallagher spent almost as much time behind the German lines as did Colonel Hogan.
Some pilots did transition back and forth, 3, 4 times, but yah, Col. does a lot of it, what REALLY blew my mind was seeing Harvey on two occasions downed behind enemy lines, that was almost absurd when consider the OG character nearly getting dismissed from the AAC for sneaking aboard as a waist gunner
Wow, I can't believe I stumbled upon this series on YT! Shows like this one in the 1960's (along with Garrison's Gorillas, Combat! et al) gave me the impetus to learn German because I wanted to know what the characters were saying. Too cool to have found this again. Thanks for uploading! - Vielen Dank!
It's interesting that you mention wanting to learn German because of these shows. As a young kid I wanted to learn German. I spent several years learning German in high school and in college. I was an exchange student and lived several years in Germany. After all that I can now re-watch all these shows and understand the German speakers. I can even tell which ones are native speakers or not just by their accents. It was years of a lot of hard work just to understand TV German. LOL.
tekawiz1 Great minds think alike! I was also a high school exchange student, then went back later to finish studying Germanistik @ Heidelberg University. I was about to go back to the US when I got a "temporary" job with the US Army and ended up staying for 30 years. Was sagst Du dazu? :D
What a concidence. I spent a year at the Uni HD, 82-83. After I graduated college in the US I went back to HD for 2.5 years 87-89, and worked as a waiter over at the NCO club at PHV and traveled around Europe in the summers. I heard a lot of the bases around HD have been shut down. I lived on Rohrbacher Str. Where in HD did you live? 30 years in HD? One of the nicest places to live in the world.
l learn German growing up in the US Air Force
glad someone else did the same
"What's past is prologue" is a quotation by William Shakespeare from his play The Tempest. In contemporary use, the phrase stands for the idea that history sets the context for the present. The quotation is engraved on the National Archives Building in Washington, DC,[1] and is commonly used by the military when discussing the similarities between war throughout history.

Bailout scene in the opening scene is amazing...so realistic!
The wind is blowing about 200 miles an hour too slow.

@@markyoungman148 Yup. Do you think that if I edit it, will it ruin the thread ?
Superb!
I forgot how good the plots and the acting were in this show, thank you for putting it on.
You must be kidding! Ha!
It took a long long time for the German people to recognize the heroism of those officers who tried many times to put a stop to Hitler's madness. This particular episode alludes to the July 20th ?, 1944 plot that ended up costing thousands of German officers, members of their families, friends, ect. their lives or freedom at the hands of the Gestapo.
Dumbo stuffenberg only needed to place the 2nd explosive in the satchel...did not need to "arm" it...extra explosive would have killed Hitler...instead he threw it in the woods as he escaped the compound...granted the pressure must have been excruciating.
@@johnrogan9420 especially for someone who was missing an arm, an eye and fingers from his remaining arm.
Yes, it's good to know that the Officers involved in the bomb plot are now seen as Hero's by the German public.
Hey Bubba, look at all dem Ford Trucks what dem Krauts be drivin !
jackpontiac52 they did build Ford trucks in Germany and France plus in Soviet Union. so not too far fetched they are using captured or manufacturer trucks once used by the enemy
@@raykisner8538 - Catholic Henry Ford was a great admirer and partner of Catholic Hitler... as were other Catholics: Thomas Edison, Charles Lindbergh, Marge Schott, Joe Kennedy Sr., etc... Ambassador Kennedy's preference for Hitler over Winston Churchill got him and his family thrown out of England... Lindbergh was assigned to the Asian war theater...
@@BuzzLOLOL Early on Hitler had attention when he rebuilt Germany's economy and military but once he became the mad DESPOT mass murderer and Germany was turned into a parking lot by his enemies, he lost his cheer leaders.
Gilchrist Stuart played Klaus von Shullendorf; in “The Sound of Music” he played Franz, the butler of the Von Trapp family who betrayed them to the Nazis.
How many of those brave men and women ended their lives choking on piano wire dangling from hooks in a ceiling. Or just shot out of hand. Listen to Hitler's speech at the end. He threatened their families as well.
History has proven that Hitler was an evil deranged coward. Our Lord forgives our sins, but you have to wonder here, not doubt the Lord. Amen
@@rkempson1177 The Lord forgives sins but, before forgiveness comes repentence. I doubt if any of that crew repented of anything.
Verructers ob der Drei Reich!
interesting no one name d historically but an admiral, colonel with an eye patch someone named Klaus and berthold
Their families in Germany would still be in danger from the Hitlerites...
SS officers Jan Merlin and John Van Dreelen drift in and out in various German roles in both 12 O'Clock High and ""Combat."
I think they're both in the same episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea as Nazis revived from suspended animation.
Were they German American actors or real ss officers? If it's the latter, they should have been hanged,
@Maria Kelly Wow, what a daring and amazing feat!
I've noticed that throughout history, most successful acts of genocide took those people who were being exterminated had been demoralized by their captors to the point where they wouldn't even attempt to regain their freedom. Even today in most of the Muslim states, and cultures where women are still treated as the property of their husbands, people are moved much like cattle. With only lightly armed guards in charge of 25 or 30 captives. There's no way they'd be able to hold a large number of Americans that way, because of the freedom instilled in us as children. Americans being held by only 2 armed guards in a group that outnumbered their captors would by nature accept casualties but be compelled to attack and overcome their captors .
Watching the reactions of different ethnic groups in these situations, having grown up in our society, which remains the most free in the world, is hard for the American mind to comprehend.
While we enjoy the liberty our society teaches us to hold sacred, and encourages all individual Americans to teach others to express desire for, and attempt to achieve in their own societies, those at the top of other countries, societies, and cultures, in government, religion or in some cases, both, - despise the American way of life, because whether the American is abroad with the peace corps, or the United States military, or wealthy business people seeking to gain wealth through accessing foreign markets,- ALL Americans tend to believe that the people they're involved with abroad were also created with the same basic rights as we have, regardless of the persons social status, - at least while they're in their own country.
Unfortunately, most foreign governments HATE the level of freedom every individual American is guaranteed under our Constitution.
Diana Hyland was so beautiful. She went on to be Travolta's girlfriend before she died in the late 70's.
WARNING !!!!! don't sit in Col Galagner co pilot seat . You will not survive whether you are foe or ally
Don't wear a red shirt in Star Trek...
Joe's regular co-pilot is former U S. Congressman Bob Dornan(CA).

They cut corners in the final season using less aircraft, less action and using a lesser expensive drama/espionage theme to save money. Season 1 a 2 black and white ver. were the best.
matrox I Believe QM Productions Realized They Made A HUGE Mistake Taking Out Gen. Savage! Their Ratings Started Going Down!
These shws have to compete with those horrible situation comedies that cost nothing to make: a room, camera, mike, lights, 3 people, script...
Major Gallagher should have been busted down to an LT. for shooting down the General.
Parachuting into Griffith Park.

I think I recognize that tavern from an episode of Combat.
I hear Star Trek music in the background
Wow, Gallagher is really put through the wringer in this episode : shot down, captured, sleep deprived, bashed on the head, and drugged...
They were showing Bf 09E's with Galland Hoods. In their defense history had not caught up. The sixties were the beginning of a historical interest in WWII.
I was in K town for 4 yrs, 64 to 68 Id go into greater detail but phones no longer give any spelling assist.
I was in K-town 88 - 91. Ramstein Air Base. U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery.
I was in K Town from 88-91. Ramstein Air Base. We were Army Air Defense and covered 3 air bases. Ramstein, Zwiebruken and Sembach. Surface to air versions of the AIM-9, Vulcan 20 mm cannons (Army equivalent of the Navy PHALANX), STINGER Man portable shoulder fired missiles and FAAR RADAR'S. We also had the latest IFF. Did the same in Korea before that. Proud of my service and the soldiers that served with me! 23 years active duty. 2 combat deployments , 1 as a PATRIOT Battery 1SG in Saudi Arabia and another as a PATRIOT Task Force CSM in Kuwait.
By this time in the series, they were stretching the plot lines. John van Dreelen does his usual intellectual great. Diana Hyland just makes me sad. She died too young in real life.
And John van dreeland guest starred in a number of episodes
Obviously the FW 190 pilot was the better pilot, although I would have thought the Mustangs performance could have been a lot better poor effort
That's because Gallagher was a bomber pilot, not a fighter pilot
People on both sides get shot down/killed in wars... wars aren't glorious things... except to religics...
Depends on pilot, an experienced mustang will almost always win, but against someone like Galland, it can be a 4 on 1 of relatively decent mustang pilots, all shot down
Gallager just sat there and let himself get hosed. First rule in a fight is to turn into the attacker and go on the offensive
No kidding! Kraut's diving in from the left and Gallagher turns RIGHT? And heck! I'm no zonker ace pilot.
without guns and a wounded man ??
Supposedly he intentionally got shot down to get the papers...
Did B-17 pilots often find themselves also flying a P-51? Seems the training pipelines for the two aircraft were not on the same paths.
I might have to go Awol with that German nurse. She is some kind of pretty.
What is sad that it took German Leadership to long bring down a monster. Only if they acted sooner more lives would have been saved.
@Herbert Norkus Then it would have been Europe against Soviet Union. Maybe it still would be war. But all this is a big maybe.
What are you saying? They never did! It took the Russians and the Allies to bring down that monster and his cohorts.
BS... "German Leadership" did no such thing... neither did the Japanese... Italy was another matter...
@@dindinprivate3477 - Yep... along with UK, Canada, Australia, many French, some Italians...
@@BuzzLOLOL Yes, you are itemizing what I covered with the generalization "the Allies", you just forgot to mention the USA. LOL
The Japanese are different of course. Their whole culture was different. They remained loyal to their Emperor, even if they didn't realize that he was misinformed and did not wield the power attributed to him.
Unbelievable story. What's a US P-51 flying solo in enemy skies ?
3:17-3:22 the Star trek theme song
Yep... maybe classical music?
WTF? AN SS OFFICER DEMANDING DECENT TREATMENT TO COL. GALLEGER ?
Yes, that is the crux with the SS There were really a couple of Dreamers in it thinking themselves as ideal soldiers and officers and really believing in it. Those fellows generally seen War Action but were not involved in slaughtering of the millions of helpless people.

A "Heinkel" turns out to be an Me-110 which magically turns into a Ju-88. Wow!
45:10 CLOSING THEME
This episode hint's at the plot to kill Hitler called " Valkyrie " ...failed of course , but still hints at that operation . Knew it ! Eduard Franz ...the Dr from John Wayne's Hatari !!! ...LOL
2:30 OPENING THEME
I know Gallagher is a Group Commander and a Colonel but, how does he rate his PERSONAL P'51 Mustang?
Also, the German military made many attempts to kill Hitler, however, all failed.
There was historical precedent for a bombardment group commander flying control for his B-17s in a Mustang.
Each plane had a crew of pilot, mechanics, MPs that traveled with it... they were very expensive...
I would think that a Full Colonel and Group Commander could fly whatever he wanted.
They did manage to half blow one of Hitler's legs off...
It wasn't his "personal" mustang. He just used other aircraft as needed;C-47,B-25,P-51,etc.
Valkyrie !!
dont you just love how they don't have challenge codes for people claiming to be US soldiers. They just saw the Heinkel and started blazing. And how there is no command alert as to Gallagher's mission
How many times this guy get shot down
Luffaffe did
Diana Hyland so attractive
That bloke in the plane is ARNOLD SCHWARZGEERE i think?,,looks like him...
Arnold Strong back then...
I don't recall Germans wearing blue uniforms.
German Navy did (KriegsMarine) and the air force did (Luftwaffe.)
The Germans wore what was called Field Gray and depending on the light could appear blue
@@robertpayne2717 And OD (Olive Drabs) had even more remarkable blending in different lights, backgrounds
the Luftwaffe wore grey-blue . Given the focus on the Air Corps/Airforce in this show, the "Stauffenberg" man is an air force officer

Where did they get the balls to name a character "Major Strasser"???? Or maybe he's the same character that ends up in Morocco? In Casablanca?

NO KAMANSKY In the COCK PIT With Joe GALLAGHER This EPISODE
There is something phony abut this episode. it seems too simple and out of sync on this one
+John Moore The plot seemed convoluted. We know and also knew by 1966 that Hitler died by suicide with his girlfriend Eva Braun in a bunker. Maybe this was originally planned as to be the last episode. For lack of money, but later enough money was found for 10 more episodes.
Surely by now you know there were several attempts to assassinate Hitler in 1944, most notably the July 20 plot involving Colonel Claus von Stauffenburg of the Wehrmacht, which this episode seems to allude to.
I'm betting this was mid 1944 and the attempted bombing at Hitler's east Prussia headquarters known at the Wolf's Lair. If Von Stauffenberg had been willing to be a suicide bomber it might have worked. It was a trestle table and and after he left someone moved the bomb behind the table leg. Just enough to spare Hitler's life. With luck Heidi and the priest died under interrogation. Most of the victims of Hitler's wrath ended up on meat hooks strangled with piano wire. Filmed so Hitler could enjoy watching them die slowly.
That guy's eye patch is the clue. The real Von Stauffenberg wore an eye patch.
The usual. Joe saves the world.
Not a great joy to watch in colour. Just seems so Hollywood. Props and sets way to obvious.acting super short of good in many but not all the colour shows.
It's great either way. The alternative is to watch today's television and watch crap like the Big Bang Theory.
please refer b/w
Another ridiculous plot!
TERRIBLE pretend German....
poorly scripted.
They cut a lot of corners in the final season. Check out season 1 and 2 for realism.
Seems a bit complicated / over elaborate, why shoot the SS Guard in the Ambulance? Plus isn't it a bit out of character having the Luftwaffe officer at the start being hard on the Col., instead of the SS officer?
Film & TV The Luftwaffe & The SS At That Time Hated Each Other! & They BOTH Hated The GESTAPO! Who Were Really In Charge!
Yeah, it's very flawed, like the other spy stories, but it manages to be quite compelling.
That was just an act played out by one of the "Operation Valkyrie" participants,to allay suspicions .
