  • He likely could have played a couple of years beyond what he did in the NHL, but retires with a Norris on his resume which is pretty good.

    I don't think some new fans truly understand the impact PK had on the game and had on Montréal the city itself. He quite literally brought people who had given up on the Habs back into falling in love with the game again. He also helped to reduce racism in hockey. He made people that are from ethnic minorities dream that they, too, could end up playing the sport they love professionally. Sure he had his bad moments, but he loved the game and Montréal more than anyone. Truly blessed to have witnessed him wear a Habs jersey and his legacy will live on forever.

    It sucks that PK’s prime ended so quickly. Dude was one of the most energetic players of the 2010’s, and his fantastic offense really complimented the physical presence he brought on the ice. The one hit he laid on Brad Marchand back in the day is one of my favorite clean hits of all time.
    That being said, the part that relieves the pain of his short career is his incredible personality. Dude could be either a TV analyst, or a stand up comedian, and he would excel in either field. Was really hoping he would join TNT once he retired so that he can really let his amazing personality loose for a national audience.

    You have to understand that, in Montreal, PK Subban was the first all-star skilled skater who everyone liked in a long time.
    His skating was so spectacular, his passion for winning was palpable and people liked that about him. Numbers, cap hit, thoses were not important. what was important was that he was fun to watch and cheer for, like McDavid for the Oilers. Most people in Montreal remember him for his skating, his highlight check on Marchand, his out-of-the-penalty box goal against Boston and his tears when he came back as a predator. The controversy with Therrien who ran him out of MTL for Weber (and his ban on the triple low-five with pk and price) was shocking to most habs fans : they wanted PK to be a one-franchise player because he deserved it.
    I remember my grandma said to me in her mid-90's : "he's my favorite player, he's fun to watch." most people who saw the dynasties knew talent when they saw it on the ice. PK Subban will be a beloved habs for eternity.

    The guy had an amazing slapshot from the blue line. As a Bruins fan you hated how good offensively he was in the early 2010s. The problem began when more and more through his career, he seem to enjoy and care being on camera than on the ice. His game wasn't the same. It's sad because I think we did not see the full extent of what he had to offer if his head was more focus on hockey.

      Well look at the defensemen of that year. Subban had the most points with a solid +/- and CF%. His defense wasn't great, but that year he outperformed every other defensemen. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Enemy team can't score if they are always playing defense.
      However Norris trophy is strange in the fact Josi won it over Carlson, when Carlson should've won and Josi lost to Makar when Josi should've won. Josi literally carried the Predators last year and got more points than Makar while being just as defensively responsible. Makar just has more hype because hes younger and on a cup contending team. It's strange cuz usually Norris trophy favors older players.

      I think there should be two trophies. One for offensive defensemen and another for defensive defensemen. Carlson's defense is generally trash. 2 random memories of Subban. 2010 playoffs. PK trying to gain the offensive zone against Philly, reminiscent of Bobby Orr, but a certain Chris Pronger was at the blue line waiting for him. Pk was simply stripped off the puck though, no harms there. lol It was not the AHL anymore.
    I think the first stretch Markov has his knee issues, there was Hamrlik and PK on the first PP unit. There goes Subban, putting his hands in the air and pointing at Hamrlik that he was gonna switch side so to be on his better side for a one-timer. Roman Hamrlik had not choice to go on the other side as PK was gesturing and coming over.
    While I was not sad to see him go when he was moved, I have good memories of the character he was. Price and PK kinda handshake after games, it was cool (I hear then that Therrien told them to stop doing that though).

    As a Montreal fan, I do not see the hype around Subban. He didn’t really win anything that it noteworthy, and when he asked for that 9 mil contract all i can think in my head was ‘he is not worth that much, he is trying to leech of the Canadiens now, we need to get rid of him as fast as possible.’

  • @jbp4.0
    @jbp4.0 Рік тому

    It's interesting to compare how the playing careers of PK and Weber ended. PK declined 4 seasons into an 8 year contract, was traded for 3 assets that did not pan out for Nashville. I think everyone is surprised that his playing career is done at 33, but I think his back issues are more troubling than he lets on.
    Weber battled through injuries and led his team to a very unlikely Cup final. Ultimately with 4 years remaining on his contract and unable to play anymore, he was a tradable asset and the Habs received a Good Winger for their roster who they can deal at the Trade deadline for a yet to be determined, but likely solid value. With this hindsight, I think it's clear that Bergevin made the right move...although I will always wonder what pushed them at that time to make this move.
    I loved watching PK play for the Habs and I look forward to his career in broadcasting where I'm certain he can excel.

    • @jbp4.0
      @jbp4.0 Рік тому

      @@mostlyboring That's why he was traded before July 1st, but not why he was traded after 1 season of an 8 season contract. Why did they think they had to move on from him? Was it the personality conflict with Michel Therrien, one of the very worst coaches in NHL history? Was there Locker room issues as is often alluded to? Or did they have concerns over his ability to deliver over the full term of the contract? Either way, when you examine the trade as I did, the Habs made the right move and are better off today because of it.

    I hope he does well in media, he's a natural. His charity work was just tremendous. And for anybody who says quiet charity is better than loud charity, nothing shames other people better than loud charity. My favorite example is not hockey, but sports related. Gates and Buffet donate piles and piles of money to their foundation. Somebody asks T Boone Pickens after he spent $1B on a football stadium what he thought, and he said well it makes me look like a jerk (this is not the word he used). So he donated a pile to the foundation as well. Sometimes people need a reminder that good things can happen and be helpful, and if it made a bunch of kids days with him showing up in a carriage or something, I'll take it.
    I was not a fan of his on the ice as my teams tended to get beat up by him and his teams. But off the ice, all star.

  • @DarthCanuck
    @DarthCanuck Рік тому

    This is why the salary cap is ruining the game. It might make more parity but overall the league is not as good as it could be. He is an NHL level Dman maybe only a 5 or 6 guy, but with the cap you cannot pay your 5 or 6 that much and I am sure PK doesn't want to play for 1 mil or less, a journeyman player like him deserves at a 4 mil a year deal at least. But NHL teams will get not as skilled guys that will play for lower a salary. So overall league skill goes down.
    Basically do you want a 20 goal scorer that is making 4 mil or a rookie making minimum that may only get you 5 to 10 goals. Most teams go with the rookie because they can't afford 20 goal scorers on their bottom 6, and because the 20 goal scorer is in his 30's now, doesn't want to play for same or barely more than the rookie is making, nor should he have to. So overall skill in the league is less all because of money.
