Nintendo typically used the additional sound channel from the FDS for sound effects. However, when there were no sound effects needed, they used the channel for making their compositions sound more full (listen to Legend of Zelda, Metroid or Kid Icarus on the FDS). Konami and Squaresoft used the channel for compositions, nothing more.

The one thing I'm looking for isn't in this video. I'm wondering about the star music. When getting the star in Super Mario Bros 2, it has the same tune as the star tune from the original SMB. I was wondering if Doki Doki Panic's star sounded the same or different.
Well, before asking that, you should probably ask how to turn caps lock off. That, my friend, is doable by pressing the key that generally says "Caps Lock", is often relatively large and located to the left or right of the keyboard, and sometimes lit when turned on. Hope this helps.
Back in 1986, Nintendo created the Famicom Disk System (FDS). For a few years, to push sales, many of their games were exclusive to the FDS (Super Mario Bros 2, Yume Kojou Doki Doki Panic, Metroid, the Legend of Zelda and Kid Icarus were first released on this system, and later converted to the NES on the International stage). The FDS had a sound expansion port to the Famicom, so there was one additional channel of sound available, hence the sound differences in these games. Nintendo used the additional channel for sound effects, and when the game wasnt in action (ie. title themes, ending credits), other developers used it for the music ( I often point to the FDS version of Gyruss as a huge difference in music from the additional channel)
Not quite. Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic was released on the Famicom Disk System. This system was never released outside of Japan due to disk reliability issues and with the level of video game piracy in Japan, Nintendo of America cared about their image and didnt want a poor reputation. The FDS still sold moderately well, mostly because of Nintendo's software. When Nintendo R&D3 came out with the MMC3 cartridge design, it was enough to have Nintendo stick with the NES/Famicom. Most Nintendo games from 1986-1988 were originally on the FDS, and ported over to the NES for release outside of Japan, as was Squaresoft's pre-Final Fantasy titles and a few Konami games.
