For those curious, I chose to use the least abbrasive method of cleaning this guy due to his age. You can also use mild dish detergent to clean sofubi, or submerge them entirely in warm water. I did not do that because it would have been more difficult to film in water, not as pleasing to the ear, and leaves more chance or water being trapped inside and forming mold.

Even if he still looks a bit dirty, I'm sure he feels a lot cleaner. It's part of the charm anyways!
Wanna let you know I binged all your videos past few weeks great variety of content. Good taste in shops, funny and knowledgeable guests, and great editing overall. Hope to see more!

You could try using Polident tablets, they're a denture cleaner. It is fantastic at releasing oils, dead skin cells, and all that funk that we make. Super cheap too.
Also, it's super handy for cleaning vessels that get a film from coffee and tea. I originally learned about all these tips from some older English women ages ago on a tea forum.
Keep up the content, your editing makes my day!

He looks great. You may find a gentle rub with a magic eraser will get a few more of those marks off. I use them on lots of figures.

Thanks Dave! I actually did attempt using some later on, but a lot of it is just the black vinyl showing through under the paint. The crevices of the fingers were grass stained pretty heavily, the magic eraser got a bit of it out, but I need to make another go at that area and some of the other marks that I missed. Was fun doing something like this finally. You are definitely the inspiration for this video 🥰

This is a cool figure, and a cool video. Will you continue its restoration or will you leave it untouched?

I think I enjoy the "patina" look it has, although I am VERY tempted to touch up the paint in a few areas... maybe I should post a poll? Also need to find a pair of black boots that fit it, as it's missing the original ones (they are always missing).

I dig the way you've been experimenting with your video style and just doing whatever strikes you.

This is very satisfying. I have a vinyl Android 16 figure and for the life of me I've never been able to get the arms in the shoulder sockets. I should try some heat maybe.

I am tempted too - but it's kind of sacrilege to repaint a 50 year old sofubi... but I definitely do want to fix his chest and fingers....maybe I'll do a poll.

Haha, pretty much! This was still fairly early on in the life of Japanese hero toys, and were still considered "dolls" back then. It definitely uses the Kewpie doll format. This was one of Bandai very first attempts at vinyl toys (made in 1971).

Yes, it is a number (most likely house number) and my friend's name (he gifted me his childhood toy).
