Rochelin have you tried the oven cleaner I'm saying this because if it can get rid of all the gonk in the oven I think it should work on the outer part of your pot.Let me know if it work.

Carbolic soap and ashes was what the old time folks use to clean pots that have baked on stain.
Oven Off works on most pots
Hi Roch,
For my pots, I just use comet and a Damp cloth or a sponge with the the green side and the sponge side(i can't think of the name if the sponge, it's yellow on one side and green on the other). You will have to use a little elbow grease to get it clean
Get a degrease and then put on the comes as this person suggest and them used a brillo or steel wool should help especially on underneath the pot.
