Incredible... I tried for the 1st time with my youngest horse Tiki the other day in an arena mind you (less distractions) and he did great for what I asked of him (big circles, canter and whoa) lol.. Nothing compared to your video. What an amazing feeling though. I just find it so amazing when a horse is THAT connected to it's rider. Congrats... Very well done.
@horseygalgem I agree about parelli. Though I don't like all his methods, and the use of spurs. I have taken his methods and changed what I needed to make it my own. I am working at becoming a horse trainer and have studied many different trainers. All the horses I've worked with have responded great to parelli. His method is very indepth and goes deeper than actual training.
Parelli teaches more than just riding without any tack or making bonds. He teaches that the horse should take on some responsibility during riding so he's not a mindless robot. Parelli's teachings are invaluable whether you use his methods or not.
Good on you! I come from a province in Canada (Saskatchewan) where my parents were too cheap to buy me tack. They thought horses were only for work so we were stuck with riding the ones that weren't good enough to work. We did that method. It was normal living next to an Indian Reserve. :)
I agree. My friends talk about me to other ppl like everything I have accomplished with my horse was easy as pie. And again, trainforthebest (this is just something that keeps coming up and it is in the best of purposes that I say this), Parelli knows he is not sharing much of anything that is impossible or new, but there are A LOT of ppl who can't ride bridless. His message is that anyone can do what he is doing. So your'e right! :)
I used to think horses don't want to be with us and don't want to be ridden. But now, I see they DO want to be with us. But only if WE PLAY, NOT WORK WITH THEM AND THEY WANT TO BE OUR PARTNERS, BUT ONLY IF WE DON'T TREAT THEM ONLY AS A RIDING OBJECT. And when they realise that all we want is a good relationship, some play and cooperation,... well you know how it is. It's a big difference. :) It just puts a smile on your face, doesn't it?
This is why I chose the learn the parelli method. It is the best feeling to be able to communicate to your horse this way. I love getting on my Arabian and knowing that he trusts me, respects me to be able to let me ride him bareback and bridle-less with total control. And he enjoys it too! I don't care about the negative opinions... Until youv'e reached this level of riding, you will never understand what it feels like.
fantastic, me and my horse melody are in training for this, shes really good, she responds to a neck strap and nothing else, and will do an almost dead stop if i give a gentle tug on the strap, some times she just wants to mess around so i have to put ehr bridle back on, but, she wuldnt be the amazing horse she is now if it werent for her being a lil demon :D when i went to see these guys it was fantastic, i hope to se them again this year :D xx
Wow! Awesome! Do you have to have a particular temperament in a horse to get that far because my pony is so stubborn and does things when he chooses to lol! Any tips? :P
i like this! look at 0:42 when the horse spins around, if you look to the tail you see the horse does not like this very much, but he does it for his rider. pat doesn't force him to do so, and the horse could easily buck him off his back but he didn't do that. that shows the trust and cooperation of the horse.
EO12345 - I was raised around traditional methods, but learned to ride and train with natural methods. I have done colt starting, gentled a wild mustang, and certified 2 Mounted Posse horses. I have owned horses for 5 years, 3 of which I have practiced Natural Horsemanship. It keeps you safe, develops a true bond with your horse which makes them WANT to do almost anything for you, accomplishes far more in far less time, and it just plain WORKS. Open your mind, for your sake and your horses.
I only watched it once to see what it was, then started commenting because you care so much. I'm sure this horse in this video is in GREAT shape too! looks very athletic... (sarcasm if you didn't get it). It is a free country, and there is a comment feature for a reason. I may not ruin Pat's day but you certainly aren't making his.
@TheFreedomhorses Did the horse look upset to you? Was he resisting his rider? No. Pat was not hurting the horse or making him do anything he didn't want to. It takes a longggg time to build the kind of relationship it takes to do that. It's not like he jumped right on and started spurring him around like a drunken oaf.
And have the drive and know-how to show them that they can have a wonderful time doing what you ask. My horse is a very stubborn and lazy horse and through my training and NH she has become manageable. With Parelli, I have something even better than "manageable": She is sensitive and willing, too!
It comes down to this: A horseman does not care about the trophies on your shelf that show what a judge thought of you one day. A horseman cares about what your horse thought of you that day.
what exaclty is parelli groundwork????? i would like to try it but i never get a clear picture of what it is and how it works any way some one could explain
@mariahcarrot1, The spurs aren't used to cruel the horse, they are an artificial aid to guide the horse. Spurs are often frowned upon as some people use them the wrong way (ie literraly kick the horse with the spur rather than rubbing the horse or squeezing them with the spur.) They should only be used as a sterring aid not a get up and go aide.
I think the vid is great. However you get what you put time into. I will ride some of my horses without saddles and bridles too. Its all about reading and animal and applying the right training. We all love our horses some just bond better then others. Happy Trails
@TheFreedomhorses, this horse is built for these kinds of manouvers. That's why you see mostly Quarter Horses or short and stocky horses at rodeos and very few thouroughbred types (tho here in oz I've seen people use thouroughbred for barrel racing) and if your going to diss rodeo, know what your talking about, because those are reining moves more than rodeo moves.
@inmadz um, if you are trying to imply that he is not using a natural approach or "hurting" the horse, you are completely wrong. It's not the tools he uses, it's how he uses them and if the tools are painless. In this case, spurs are not painful or aggressive to the horse if you use them with care and when needed. If you watch the video again, you can see that he is not jabbing the horse, or even kicking the horse.
I genuinely don't understand why people get so hot under the collar about all this. If you don't like a particular horse trainer or don't approve of their methods don't watch the videos. There is a huge range of horsemanship styles to choose from today: classical to NH. As long as neither horses nor humans are coming to any harm then surely there isn't a problem.
I am not a Parelli nut or nazi. I employ some of his methods with ny horses, but I also use techniques from Clinton Anderson, Mark Rashid, Chris Cox, Craig Cameron, and others. I use natural gentling techniques with my horses, and I use whatever seems to work the best for them - whatever gets me the results I want, with the maximum understanding and cooperation on the horses's part, and the most minimal stress and pressure I can get away with.
but is a lesser evil a good really worth supporting? Maybe the horses aren't exposed to a risk of cruelty as much with parelli, but what about the people? I've seen so many people get hurt trying to play games with a horse who completely disrespected them
Parelli uses a carrot stick with a string attached, which is occasionally used to correct your horse as a Phase 4. Nobody ever claimed that we don't use strong phases, but what differs us from you is that we give the horse a fair chance to respond correctly first. Using your whip on a horse that just simply doesn't know how to change leads sounds like you're a great teacher.
so, are you assuming that other syles of riding don't have the trust of their horse? when you see someone do 4foot jumpers you don't think the horse trusts the rider and believes that they are a strong leader?
This video is very very old. It was one of his first educational video's so things have changed and the program has evolved. Pat Parelli used to be a rodeo rider before he got into Parelli, I guess spurs were just part of his attire. Spurs are really not a bad thing if they are used correctly. These days Pat rarely uses spurs and they should only be used for elevation of stride and refinment(not to get your horse to go forward or to use in a abusing manner)
Clinton Anderson is the man..! I don't like his personality, He comes across rude. But his training for horses speaks for itself. The proof is right there in your face. This parelli guy is a lot of show. Smoke and lights. I can do what parelli does. Not because I am some awesome horseman. But because I am a good horseman. And the main reason..! Is because I have studied, And researched, I have watched video after video on how a horses mind works. What makes them tick. What makes them scar
Where do you think Clinton learned it all. Pat Parelli in Australia,, back in the day when Pat traveled to Australia and did clinics all over. Clinton was probably just learning to walk then. This video is over 30 years old, no one was doing this back then, except Troy Henry, Tom Dorance and their students.
@naturalhorsewoman1 AND..........................I dont recall ever saying I dont have a good relationship with my horses- .......Im glad we agree on how much we love our horses -Prizes are an added bonus -- but you cant win unless you love your horse and they love you back-- trust is the only way
Bambee, notice the signs PP is using- espacially the hand (neck rein by fingers, showing the rein, etc). This horse was tought by fully equiped. So this is a show - like all. BThW, they use everything - U would B suprised, how many things.;-)
I saw Pat get dumped on his keester right in front of me once. It was soo funny. He was showing off, and was spinning so fast he spun off. No kicking to spin, tho. Parelli technique is awesome, even if Pat is an arrogant smart alec.
People PLEASE stop! I have corresponded with E012345, and she is a classically trained horsewoman of the highest caliber. She employs gentle techniques with her horses, and simply is trying to make a case for classical training methods, which are by no means harsh or cruel. Natural Horsemanship was not invented by Parelli - the techniques have been used for centuries. I practice natural horsemanship, but encourage anyone who loves horses to learn about all disciplines.
There have been Olympians who use Parelli or some form of NH. I mean it's fine if you think it's a bowl of whooey, but there isn't a yellow Parelli logo on the forehead of Parelli students, so how would one really know, anyhow? I don't go into the showring in a Parelli halter and lead: How do ppl know by whom or how my horse is trained?
well thats the whole point of parelli... you CAN be like that!! there should be a parelli instructor in your area, i mean i'm in perth Australia practically the most isolated city in the world, and even we have a couple!! haha. its great. personally i prefer Monty Roberts, but really whatever works best for you and your horse
Now I see where this was going wrong. I use to teach dressage lessons; I always had 8 out 10 students who had no skills + no understanding for what they were learning. I can only imagine how hard it is to teach a large crowd about your program. 1) He can keep his promise 2) it's not riding instructions in any discipline, it's teaching people from various backgrounds HIS riding technique which is not comparable to traditional riding 3)You're right! But that's the only way to reach the masses!
I have seen this video so many times but I never get sick of it!
Wow! To jest Cudowne, tak świetnie porozumiewać się z Koniem!
Incredible... I tried for the 1st time with my youngest horse Tiki the other day in an arena mind you (less distractions) and he did great for what I asked of him (big circles, canter and whoa) lol.. Congradulations!!! You are the first articulate parelli person on UA-cam, scratch that- in the WORLD...
@horseygalgem I agree about parelli. Though I don't like all his methods, and the use of spurs. I have taken his methods and changed what I needed to make it my own. I am working at becoming a horse trainer and have studied many different trainers. All the horses I've worked with have responded great to parelli. The thing I LOVE about Pat is that you can watch and listen to him for hours without getting bored. That is a gift. Monty Roberts I get bored with.
that s the ultimate respect between a horse and its rider...amazing!
What a good horse. Beautiful riding :)
I love this video! I can't wait until the day I can do that! Shouldn't be too long!
I´ve never seen such a brilliant rider!!Love him ♥
wow! simply amazing horsemanship!!
I haven't seen this in 10 years.....it is still fabulous to watch though
wow very fantastic.. very inspiring to this parelli learner. wonder if you could share any tips on cantering bareback???
I love watching any horse being ridden like this..
Parelli teaches more than just riding without any tack or making bonds. He teaches that the horse should take on some responsibility during riding so he's not a mindless robot. Parelli's teachings are invaluable whether you use his methods or not.
awesome! so inspiring. I wish I could do that...maybe someday!
Wow, amazing. I think both Monty Roberts and Parelli are equally great methods to work with horses. =]
You are the best!

Wow thats great! I'm trying to do some parelli with my horses now :)
amazing ! i have just started doing parelli ! xx
Wow! Amazing!!!
He is just so good and patient ! I admire him !
Woow! This is when i mean that sompheting is beatiful! I love it! but how can you learn it to your horse?
its so nice
parelli is the best!

this show is ace i have rode oggy bareback and bridless
trop bien, ca c'est léquitation ethologique au plus haut de son art!!! very very impressive!!!
It's too bad, everybody doesn't do like hime ! Pat Parelli, the true horsemanship !
Brilliant, but is the rider wearing spurs for???
And have the drive and know-how to show them that they can have a wonderful time doing what you ask. My horse is a very stubborn and lazy horse and through my training and NH she has become manageable. With Parelli, I have something even better than "manageable": She is sensitive and willing, too!
Right On Pat!
fantastic parnersip

same iv got my horse almost done level 1 its AMAZING
what exaclty is parelli groundwork????? i would like to try it but i never get a clear picture of what it is and how it works any way some one could explain
Does anyone know of any Parelli Clincs coming to Alabama or Florida? Whether it's Parelli or one of his professional trainers?
@mariahcarrot1,
The spurs aren't used to cruel the horse, they are an artificial aid to guide the horse. I didn't search it btw, a similar video was featured on FHOTD and this was under the related videos so I clicked to have a look.
parelli the best
wow I wish I could do that!!
AMAZING
¡Es el mejor! Wow. Quiero montar como él =D
It´s the best! Wow. I want ride as he.

it is also when they are thinking/learning/making connections.

MAGNIFIQUE***
yeaaa.well in my opinion, no matter how expensive he is, monty roberts is a legend and the best.
Have you ever heard of Buck Brennaman? He has similar methods to Parelli and he did just that: and won.
how right you are EO12345!! i completley agree with your statement!
so, are you assuming that other styles of riding smack a horse right away?
I am not a Parelli nut or nazi. I employ some of his methods with ny horses, but I also use techniques from Clinton Anderson, Mark Rashid, Chris Cox, Craig Cameron, and others. Pat Parelli is my god :D
"Most people who have opinions have never really seen what I've done."

That is just a really nice thing to say, anackoul.
trained my horse by useing the john lyons stuff, but this parelli guy from what im seeing this horse do don't look to bad!might need to look into him
MEGA !!!!

@gottogobreyer the parelli method trains the human, not the horse, it trains the human to train the horse
i want to see parelli play hi goal polo or jump the world cup an than i will have more respect...
open your eyes!
I like your comment that is so true.
