I like your idea of working in “blocks.” That’s a lot more manageable than expecting yourself to work on several projects all in the same day for example.

I've tried the strategy of working on multiple projects in a day so many times but I just can't personally get it to work! I think it's very hard for me to shift gears between projects so quickly, because I prefer to work on one thing for several hours so I can deeply focus on it, which doesn't leave me room or space for multiple projects in a day.

This is unvaluable advice. Over the course of the months watching your videos I was finally able to find an approach to writing that was both fun and leading to the actual completion of projects (shiny idea syndrom yess) while still being compatible with my heavy workload of this year ? I can't stress how much you helped, thank you so much Shaelin

Some thoughts which have helped me:
+It's better to write a bad story than to write nothing.
+What a bad story lacks in quality it makes up in experience.
+Ideas are unlimited, but experience is precious.
    +Move before you are ready.

Hello Ma'am. I am writing to you from India, and am so happy to have found your channel. I wanted to pursue Creative Writing, but there is a lack of these courses where I live; so I have to be content as a postgraduate student of English Literature, a course that makes us read and criticize texts, but not how to write one. Your channel is a boon for students like us.
I mostly confine myself to poetry, namely Sonnets, but I composed a short-story for a contest of whose results are to be declared. But what I discovered from this exercise, is that writing is rewriting: I had to rewrite the story about four times to get it right; I could have written a fifth time too, but honestly, I felt exhausted. If you could share your process of rewriting, and give some suggestions on how one could approach it, it would be beneficial :)

It's always reassuring/encouraging to know that I'm not the only person who needs a break sometimes, specifically in order to better be able to continue working on something later on, and finds that rotating projects is actually a beneficial part of my process because of that. 💜
Thank you for sharing your own personal tips and tricks!
I really appreciate, also, when people offering advice to others stress the importance of how not every thing works for every writer and that's actually okay and it's finding what's right for "YOU"[ the particular individual] that is always the most paramount thing for each writer to accomplish. ^-^

Ha. We are in a similar place. I have multiple projects in very late stage, like 99% stage. Never done multiples before but it seems to be happening unplanned. I tell you, I found a particular kind of folder I love, Leather with an outer pocket to slip notes in. I had to buy multiple colors and versions. "Why am I doing this?" I thought, "I only do one project at a time." Suddenly I was filling each of the five folder with a separate project. The project grew out of the folders! Anyway, four in final cover stage and the multiple strat worked like a charm. In particular in works for non-fiction works as you aren't losing any flow or cohesion of plot. Cool find, the folders.

I really liked this video. I've been doing a total rework of my writing habits, because what I've been trying so far just isn't helping at all. I've never thought to try working on multiple things at once, but listening to why it helps you has got me thinking it might help me, too. This is very similar to how I approach my day job, how I approach housework, even how I read. So maybe it would help me with writing, too. Thanks for the inspiration!

I just started to figure out what works for me best, by taking notes of my process and I might try this block method, since I have a first draft of a novel to edit for the first time, a growing number of short stories to edit (see the theme rip) and also two ideas I want to work on/return to asap, but only the thought of all that is overwhelming lol, but I want them done, so maybe breaking them up would help? I just find, whenever I'm trying to edit something, I find it so boring, because the story isn't new to me anymore....

    • @ShaelinWrites
      @ShaelinWrites  2 роки тому +2

I'm the same in that editing isn't as engaging to me as drafting so it can get a little draining to work on for too long, so I find mixing it up with drafting new stuff for sure helps!

I don't like schedules either and I work on two books simultaneous. Plus a fan-fic for fun as a practice in a different frame of view. The niches inside are, "psychological and romance" this level is rather ambitious. The advantage here is, both sit hand in hand; building a deeper foundation.

I've got three on the go. If I run out of ideas for one, I work on another until I come up with new ideas for the one of my others. I find it more productive than staring at a page getting nowhere with one story and then calling it writer's block.

I feel quilty for working on multiple stories at the same time but can't do other way. I burn out really quickly when I focus hard on one. Currently I'm working on two novels, one of them is dystopian and the other is a lighthearted story about fairies. When I have bad days, I tend to work on my dystopian novel and vice versa. It's hard to write anything positive when you are sad and something depressing then you are happy. Of course I'm not saying that there is no place for happiness in tragedy and sadness for comedy, but still...

Shaelin: as they say in the movie...The Matrix maybe you need to unplug man and follow the white rabbit 🐇,lol.
That's what I do, I'm like you I 'love' my never-ending walks, I have went through 2 German Shepherds, who I would walk with, they were my driving force, but now I walk alone. I also have other things I like doing in my life... danger is a highly motivate one, and when you see your life flash before your eyes. It changes you, but time and time again me and the grim reaper love dancing together. 💃
With all that said, I've wrote my 4th and 5th novel at the same time. Sure it was alot of work... but I wrote them in 1- 2 months time frame and they are not short. I can pretty much write a novel in a month to two months. I'm a chapter away from my finishing my 6th novel, 1st for the year, but I want to have 2 more novels wrote before years end, because like you I want to write and write, or maybe that's just me. I love it, it's maybe not about the writing its about telling a story.
But, I understand you struggle with internal conflict. Let's call them your flaws, yes, I get to understand you by well, you. You shouldn't listen to her, your negative side... she overwhelms you to much. I'm just trying to encourage you... to breathe. It will be fine. It's fine to follow the white rabbit, 🐇 disconnect.
Ways I disconnect, other hobbies. Outside of writing and tons of reading. But I have fallen in love with her... grammar. And she's always pulling at my heart to understand her.

The jobbing builder, gardener and actor do bits of work here and there for different people. So why not the writer?
Your advice is invaluable as Aesthete said (below) because novels and short stories require time away when the unconscious is free to work.
The writer can then turn to other projects: Essays, journalism, travel sketches, poetry, technical writing and advertising copy etc. etc.
Decades ago I read a book of interviews with Graham Greene (*The Other Man: Conversations with Graham Greene* Marie-Francoise Allain).
Greene said he had an off and on novel he was unable to see clearly: It must have been *The Captain and the Enemy* a short enigmatic work.
Writers can learn from mixed-media artists who move between multiple projects. Writing should be fun too as you say, Shaelin. A form of play.
*Kass McGowan - Mixed Media, Found Object Artist.* UA-cam.
*Blythe Scott - Mixed Media Artist.* UA-cam. *Sarah Bush: Mixed Media Artist.* UA-cam.
There is no reason why writers should not attend mixed media art classes or go looking for old bits of brass and oil cans like Kass McGowan.
John Berger made drawings all his life, wrote novels, stories and profiles of painters. Michael Ayrton was a sculptor, printmaker + novelist.
A.S. Byatt has written novels, short stories, fairy tales, literary essays. Tom Stoppard (UA-cam) has a play with a big cast and he is 84.

...a month for a chapter? I am not the chill one at all. I feel like I don't have enough time at all. There are different reasons, but fear of death is one and it's a possibility at any time. Considering I am on my first book, and like Putin is knocking on the gates of my country so...m...being calm....not possible. Also, family is supporting me while I am doing this. So it feels like if I don't do it, why am I even at home before a page? You know. Like my god, I beat myself up for not writing one day.
Thing is...I usually write everyday for like a week, or edit, or whatever and then I get depressed-ish or burnt out and take a week off but I don't even want to take it. I just can't find it in me to do much and I just end up sleeping for days. Then I start working hard again after I feel like I've wasted too much time. And like this cycle keeps repeating.
And I've tried being chill and stuff, but I like doing it for hours. Like I don't enjoy writing for 2 hours and then stopping. I like getting so immersed with it that I literally lose sight of myself and the world. My favorite days are when I eat, write for 12 hours and then go to sleep.
So, I guess it all comes down to....having to accept that I need to take a break and that's.......................sigh. How does one do that ?When all I enjoy most in the world is literally writing and I've also wasted years on top of that cause I was living the Vida Loca and writing nothing? (editing is not my favorite yet though, working on that cause I see the benefits, but also man, takes forever)
