Lilly, If you want your small cabin to last for a while you need to DEBARK all logs being used. Otherwise, the bark will trap water behind itself and rot it slowly. In addition, you need to burn the logs so they are black but still solid that will come in contact with the ground and snow height. otherwise, they too will be subject to insects and rot.

Your energy is contagious. I just purchased one of your knives. Alternative to shrink wrap on arrow feathers. Hold second arrow perpendicular to arrow with new feathers. Roll the arrow back and forth on the front edge of the feathers until close to flat. Place a drop of glue on the rolled area and let dry. It works great - try it.

My dog gets that medicine which you have to pour onto its neck and it works for at least 3 months. Ticks do not like her anymore, but sadly they can still bite humans. Spent a day with high fever thanks to a bite. With the fire, I would use some rocks as the tree roots can also start burning and in some cases they do that for long distances, although, if the ground is really wet one should be kind of safe.

Most people think they want a big cabin, even if it is just for an overnight. Most trappers cabins were smaller. This was to cut down on the heat required to keep it warm, the materials needed to build it, and if they were on a trap line they may only stay a few days at one cabin before moving to the next one.

I used to have a Lab/Setter dog with long hair, she always got ticks in the summer, then my dad told me to dust her fur down with 7-Dust, it helped a lot to keep the bugs off her. Its a 100% natural insect replant for plants that also works on thick/long animal fur. Being as I live in the eastern USA we also kept a fresh flee-collar on her to to be extra sure, some animals are naturally protected against Lyme-disease but Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever can be deadly!

Hello, Lilly. I enjoyed your video. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos and watching how your cabin progresses. Do you have a layout to follow, or are you designing it as you go based on your experience in building shelters?
Do you take Amy on all of your wanderings? Methinks she needs her own tent next to you so that when she gets all wet and doggy-smelly, she will have a small place to curl up and have a roof over her head. Do you live in Austria, Germany, or Switzerland? Where you live, can you obtain a special chemical-treated collar for her that is formulated to kill bugs and ticks, like we have in the USA, or are they not allowed there?
Congratulations on finishing your knife design and getting it to market! I thought I had enough survival knives, but after reading so many positive reviews of your knife, I see that I need to add yours to my gear. I wish you a lot of success with it and the next item you design!

When I was sixteen my dad and grandpa talked about some line cabins they had used to run trap lines in the winter ..
Well one thing lead to another and we ended up building a pole cabin.
When we finished dobbing it we decided that we would wait for the first snow to spend the night.. it was a bit bigger and we spent a night in an ice storm in it..
I spent a lot of time in it .. my grandpa died in 1977 my dad died two years ago.
The shack has been rotted to the ground for decades ..
But that one night listening to them talk about taking turns running the trap lines and their little adventures when life was hard is still fresh in my mind…

Lilly, you need a pair of work gloves and an axe. It is better to work with a friend in case one of you has an accident. You need a first aid kit on hand. Have grid references prepared in case you need to summon an ambulance, and know where the nearest hospital is. Try not to saw wood unless the wood is supported. If the saw slips, you might sustain injury. Best to travel in the woods with a friend who can he[p you if you run into difficulties. But a great video nonetheless.

hi Lilly, love your videos... as I watching your this video, I observed some huge size tree that's already fallen... I think it will make a very good raised bed base for your log cabin... since you said you are short of smaller size logs, you can use some of what is available to make a foot heigh wall all around and then use a tent ... thereby making a nice cabin for you.. with limited use of wood

I just love watching Lilly and Amy work. I always learn something. I noticed that some of the branches she cut for the fire with the bow saw were pretty thin. Being lazy, I usually find a tree with a double trunk or two close together, and use leverage to just crack the branches too thick to break by hand.
Also, Lilly, when you placed the saw under the log, were you not worried about rust? Or did you perhaps oil or wax it?
And I love how, on the logs, you used the saw almost like a file or sandpaper to smooth out the notches.

Awesome video as always Lilly. It must be great having a dog to be with in the woods to keep you company. I’ve been working on a small cabin shelter too. I have the base logs notched and tied with cheap paracord. I don’t want to waste good cord, save that for better projects. I have the back wall up, a skeletal frame and tarp for the roof and side walls. My shelter interior is 5X7. It’s taking me a while to find the perfect tree logs too. I may of mentioned this before, but I found making notches easier by using a wood chisel to knock out the cuts in the log. Your knife works great though. Stay safe and be well. Thanks for sharing.
