I'm 28 and have been quite sensible with my finances for a number of years now. I have approximately $62,000 saved for retirement so far, plus a $10,000 emergency fund, $10,000 in an international shares index fund, a few thousand in other direct shares, and a few thousand in savings. I've just finished college and will earn a base salary of $63,000 per year which I will be maximising my savings upon
Can't wait for the investing videos that has to be one of the areas of personal finance that make my head spin and confuse me. I've always been a saver and I'm working on getting myself out of debt I watch tons of videos but investing is still the one area that I feel so uncomfortable with.
Yup, my biggest regret from my 20s is that I didn't start saving back then. I turned 30 in December and started budgeting just a year ago. I was never really reckless with my money and always had a little something saved up in case of an emergency. But I was also working all of my twenties with a decent salary, so to think how much I could have saved up, is really depressing. But I'm currently back in school, and will be graduating with a good career prospect so I'm not worried but just frustrated at my youthful ignorance. But you live and learn!
I’m going through the same thing with your dental problems!! Failed root canals and I just got my extraction and bone graft 2 weeks ago. Luckily, I am a nanny for a dentist so she’s giving me a major discount to help me get my dental health back on track!
WOW this video was so inspiring. As a 21 year old who lives in her own, I really look for advice to learn how to be and adult and this video definitely is a game changer because it helps shape my mindset to look out for my future self. And I thank you both for that.
It's great that Alexis is asking young. I had intentions in my 20s and I did save something small. In my 30s I listened to Larry Burkett, but I never felt compelled to act on anything he said. Thanks to Dave Ramsey's raw truth I took action. Now it's time to move on to FI!
Great video. About that dental part, that’s quite correct about seeing about a broken tooth immediately so that one wouldn’t have root canal treatment but I do believe that it should have been explained to you at that point of time the success rates of re-root treatments even in the simplest of terms. First treatment 90% or more success rate. Repeat treatment 50% or less success rate. Anywho, I want to say that one should learn how to brush and FLOSS one’s teeth properly, insurance or not. Try not to let one night slip and not floss. Invest in an electric toothbrush. Avoid alcohol based mouthwash. Just reapply toothpaste after brushing and flossing. Spit and go to bed! (It’s an at home fluoride treatment for those aren’t against fluoride). It saves a lot of money. Prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure. I see it all of the time. Kind Regards A dentist.
Thank you for the information! I don't remember anyone discussing the success rates with us. That may have changed our outlook from the beginning. - Joseph
I’m about to turn 27! I wish I’d learned how important it was to start paying off student debt while in college and also learned how to get/use a credit card responsibly. It’s been two years since I started taking personal finance seriously and though I feel a bit behind I know I’m getting to where I want to be!
Thank you so much for this! I’m a year older than Alexis, and I’ve started educating myself on finances as well. There’s so much information out there that it can be a bit overwhelming, but I enjoy your videos because they are informative yet uplifting. I’m so happy I found your channel! Xx
Thank you both so much for taking the time to make videos like this! I am a 21 year old college student who has been financially independent since I started college at 18. I struggled for the first couple of years learning how to balance and budget my money. Your videos have helped me tremendously. I am currently investing through a small app like you mentioned and it feels good to see the money build up overtime! Thank you both for speaking candidly about money and helping people like me understand how to gain financial freedom!
Joseph said something in one of the last videos about doing more investing videos and I would more than love for you guys to continue doing more investing series videos, PLEASE!!!!!!!!
I want to do more too and we will. The problem is that they are just not very popular and it is hard to watch videos not do very well. Still, I promise more soon.-Joseph
It's crazy, why don't people want to know more about investing? If you do it right, your money could be making you money and you can sit at home and not work at all.
Great video guys 👍 I'm trying to teach my granddaughter who is in her 3rd year of college what I didn't know about finances. I wish knew to start saving early. I'm retired now and I do kick myself from time to time wishing I had started early with my saving & investing. Keep the great content coming guys it is appreciated. Blessings
I love your bright positive outlook and how you say to concentrate on the future. I wish I would of gotten a better paying job. I taught at a private school.
This is an excellent video!!! Thank you!!! I'm an accountant and obsess over my budget and the "numbers". I've survived being a single mom for the past 15 years but NOW I know what I could have done better. Watching your videos confirms that I am on the right track and would be so appreciative if my girls would latch on to the idea of budgeting. Of course young adults would rather hear this info from someone else SO I shared this segment with my daughters, nieces and nephews. There is so much to consider in this big world - proper guidance is so key. Thanks for helping me make budgeting more important to my kids. I hope more segments for 20 year-olds are on the way! I will make sure they watch!! Yall are the cutest family and LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos!! Here's to your continued success! And mine...
I love the video, your comment about insurance cannot be overstated. I know a person who got into a car accident while driving without insurance. The judgement against him wasn’t even large, but the effect was awful, it dogged him for years.
Ok all of that dental work sounds like my personal hell. I've had a few cavities due to waiting too long without insurance but good lord. Thankfully i have it now, but hopefully this story will convince a few people to not wait. All my love and prayers for that next procedure.
Wow this video is a total gem, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am 22 years old trying to be better with my money and I'm totally looking forward to the upcoming videos on investing etc. New Subby! I love it, be blessed xo
Please do the investment series soon! I've been learning a bit on my own, but I really would love to learn more about starting with a little bit of money and the how-to's. Thank you!
Have you guys done a top-down video all about your student loans and how soon you were able to pay off the high-interest loans? It will definitely help people who are considering law/business school to decide whether it's worth it and what a good set of loans would be. Thanks!
I thknk this is my favorite video. I'm in my 20s and while I know about most of these things, I also wish I could've taken a personal finance class in college. I am now working on learning about investing and I wish I had taken this aspect of finance more serious a decade ago
When we were in our 20s, my husband and I started investing into a managed fund. I wish I understood then about volatility and risk - about a year in, the market took a dip, we pulled our money out and realised/actualised the loss. And what’s worse, we stopped all saving altogether. I try not to think about ‘what might have been’ We’re okay now, but still, what might have been
A meal in with friends is sometimes so much better and cheaper that my friends and I almost always just cook for each other with a theme like mug cake/pizza etc etc ... those are my best memories
I’m paying attention to the subject matter but at the same time I just want to compliment how she’s wearing her makeup. It’s tastefully and beautifully done, compliments her complexion and features.
I was fortunate enough to go to college on scholarship and virtually no debt. In thinking about my own niece and future babies, I will definitely make sure they don't get caught up in the hype of rankings. The education, in terms of what you are learning, is the same at every college. What you are paying for is the network. What you are paying for is the chance to network and developing friendships with a certain social group of individuals. I will most definitely make sure that they understand what they are actually paying for before they possibly take on massive amounts of student debt.
love this, I'm currently saving for a car to buy it in cash hopefully, I want to start saving again but I don't know what to do with the money 👀could you guys give us ideas what to do with your saving? like start a business or something smaller I don't know 😅or investment ideas maybe
Excellent advice! I completely agree... I’m 32 and wish I had known everything you just mentioned....I could be so much more wealthy right now.😩 But it is what it is. So, I’m currently working on paying down my higher interest debt, and I plan on maxing my 403B contributions when I can, but after that, I’m really at a loss for how to begin investing with what’s left! Roth IRA? Open an HSA? Money market? I will be keeping my eyes peeled for the investing series.
R Waters 457 if your employer is financially healthy/sound. But yes, HSA, 529, (backdoor) Roth IRA, taxable/brokerage (after all tax-advantaged space is maxed all out) are good places to fund next. The order in which you fund them depends on a few personal factors.
A few of my big regrets were getting credit cards and not utilizing them properly; getting student loans and not paying them off as soon as I could, and not saving.
I did 3 root canals, an extraction and an implant! I feel your pain. I was "lucky" I had some insurance but still somehow paid $4000-$5000 during this process.
Love your videos! Do you guys have a video that helps understand 401k or breakdown how to set up your 401 or what to look for when doing it, also how often should it be reviewed or changed?
THIS! I am in my early 30s and was an excellent saver in my 20s but NEVER contributed to the IRA my mother opened for me during college! Ugh! She didn’t really explain it to me with any urgency, and I had no idea about retirement contributions, and their value. Also, she opened it at a bank that was exclusive to the state she lived in, and I had moved across the country, AND the bank does not have an online deposit option for IRAs! Now that I’m back in the same state, I have it on my goal list to start throwing money at the very teeny tiny balance, but I’m SO behind. ☹️
oil pull.i will do that when my tooth hurts and I just oil pull for 3 days and the pain goes away. FYI after not going to a dentist for 7 years, was the first i had no cavities, when i finally did. i hope that can help if you ever need a quick fix before seeing a dentist.
I'm already 35 😔 I definitely wish I had went to see a financial adviser at 18. I wish I had took advantage of starting a 401k and saved half of my income from the time I started working
At the beginning of the video, you were explaining the importance of saving early by showing a sample. How did you come up with the million dollars, by saving 250 dollars per month at the age of 22 until 65? Please show me step by step, because the number I get for a million in 43 years is a bit more than 250 dollars you'd have to put in your retirement savings account. Thx for explaining, maybe there is something I'm just missing... Greetings, AnimeLover
By investing in retirement account(s). 401k, Roth IRA or other retirement investment accounts. Depending on who you listen to you can make anywhere from 6-12% return annually. So compounding over time it will grow majorly. Don't put the majority of your retirement savings in a traditional savings account. Savings accounts should be used more for emergency funds, saving for large purchases, or sinking funds
My wife and I got an inheritance for $25,000 we took that paid off our debt then both of us got a million-dollar life insurance policy. I need to save money now. For dental insurance I live right by Mexico it's cheap they do a good job. I like to go to the casting calls of Shark Tank and buy my way into businesses.
I wish I had known to set roommates expectations earlier and not give dead beat roommates as much slack. I ended up the mom of the apartment because I took care of making sure everything was paid and holding people accountable, but not one else seemed to care as much. Sense they didn't feel the same level of responsibility I got screwed multiple times.
It is almost the same shirt. Tasha joked that it was the same one and I had to look very closely. I still have clothes that I wore in high school, so it was a possibility. -Joseph
Please, please, pleeeeeease make a video on your rooth canal. There is so much information on this subject that it will be very useful, not to mention it will bring you a lot of views. There are not too many well made videos on that subject.
But what does a 65 year old do with a million dollars ?! I’m 20 now and I’d rather spend money on things I can enjoy now and won’t be able to do when I’m 65 . Am I not right?
I'M CONFUSED!!!! 2:36 You said if I start saving $250 a month when I'm 22, I'll have a million dollars saved up by the time I am 65 years old. 65-22 = 43 years of savings = 516 months of saving $250. That is only equal to $129,000. Where do you get the other $871,000???
I wish I would started for retirement when I was 20. When you're 20, 30 seems so far away. The funny thing is once you're 30, 40 seem so close 😂😂😂 I LOVE y'all and your videos
Thanks for watching! For me, 40 only just started feeling close when I realized that I'll be 36 in a few months. And now that I'm so close to 40, 40 doesn't feel old at all.--Tasha
I have life insurance (and I was reluctant to get it before married with kids, but you really save a heck of a lot of money if you do it young and you can invest with it, as well so its definitely worth it). So many people don't have adequate life insurance. They just don't think about it or think it doesn't matter.
I have term insurance with return-of-premium. By the end of my term, my children will hopefully be established enough that they're not waiting on a windfall after Mom dies. Whole life is a racket and can be borderline predatory, in my opinion.
While it's always nice to be able to take advantage of compounding, I would also be perfectly happy if I had even saved a 6 month emergency fund in a regular old savings account in my 20s. Having to fill all of my savings buckets now in my 30s is that much harder because I did nothing in my twenties.--Tasha
I want in the military then. It was the cheap metal filling that was put in by the military that caused me to need a root canal in the first place. Military medical care is just not that great, unfortunately. --Tasha
Don't feel bad, focus on what options you have available. Looking for some freelance work to make ends meet and build experience is a good idea. Anything that can help you showcase your skills for employers is good. -Joseph
I like watching your videos, you offer good tips on a lot of things however don't get me wrong, the story about your molar is a slippery slope fallacy. You could have treated it earlier instead of waiting and exacerbating things
Very true, Joseph! Oh and don't worry, she's in her early 70s now and still ruling the roost. ;) She's had some dental work done and she's doing great, especially for her age!
I'm 28 and have been quite sensible with my finances for a number of years now. what account/bank do you recommend for a retirement account.. that has the highest interest..??
I did 3 root canals, an extraction and an implant! I feel your pain. I was "lucky" I had some insurance but still somehow paid $4000-$5000 during this process.
Love your videos! Do you guys have a video that helps understand 401k or breakdown how to set up your 401 or what to look for when doing it, also how often should it be reviewed or changed?
How do you save up for retirement when you work for yourself? Are there 401k for ppl that arent with a company and will match the contribution?
65-22= 43
Year has 12 months.
250x12= 3000

How can I fill out my w2 form when applying for a job with 5 kids and married
We don't give specific tax advance.--Tasha
Debt Free!
I wish I would started for retirement when I was 20. When you're 20, 30 seems so far away. The funny thing is once you're 30, 40 seem so close 😂😂😂
I LOVE y'all and your videos
Thanks for watching! For me, 40 only just started feeling close when I realized that I'll be 36 in a few months. And now that I'm so close to 40, 40 doesn't feel old at all.--Tasha
when she goes on a really long rant then says "long story short"
Tasha you are so beautiful! I love y’all videos.
Awww! Thank you so much! I'm so happy that you like our videos. :-) --Tasha
what age do you recommend talking with kids about money?
As soon as they can talk.--Tasha
I have life insurance (and I was reluctant to get it before married with kids, but you really save a heck of a lot of money if you do it young and you can invest with it, as well so its definitely worth it). So many people don't have adequate life insurance. They just don't think about it or think it doesn't matter.
That's true. We certainly agree that life insurance is important. Whether it is a good investment or not is another story. - Joseph
One Big Happy Life for someone like me who does not want to invest in the stock market, it’s perfect
Do you mean the whole life insurance policies that they pass off as an investment? Dave Ramsey advises against that, really look into that.
I have term insurance with return-of-premium. By the end of my term, my children will hopefully be established enough that they're not waiting on a windfall after Mom dies. Whole life is a racket and can be borderline predatory, in my opinion.
Girl...I have the same dental story...procrastinated procrastinated procrastinated ...and yup, now I am the proud owner of TWO implants.
Should probably specify that you have to invest money to have a large amount & not just save money.
Great video, how old are you guys? You both look so young aka in your twenties but you mention you aren’t. 🤔🤭😊

The military didn't pay for your root canal?
I want in the military then. It was the cheap metal filling that was put in by the military that caused me to need a root canal in the first place. Military medical care is just not that great, unfortunately. --Tasha
One Big Happy Life Thanks for your response. Just curious what about your undergraduate degree and law school. The military didn't pay for it?
The military covered my undergrad tuition but no my living expenses, so I took out loans for that. It did not cover my law degree.--Tasha
Got you. Thanks for your response
Have you guys thought about writing a book 📖?
Yes. I don't know exactly when, but it is going to happen. I'm determined. - Joseph
I feel like a loser. I got a degree in IT and can't get a job in my field:(
Miss Judy What is your area of interest in IT?
Have you tried freelancing? Sites like Upwork offer IT services.
Don't feel bad, focus on what options you have available. Looking for some freelance work to make ends meet and build experience is a good idea. Anything that can help you showcase your skills for employers is good. -Joseph
You have a 16yo.How old are you guys ?
We're in our 30s.-Joseph
I like watching your videos, you offer good tips on a lot of things however don't get me wrong, the story about your molar is a slippery slope fallacy. You could have treated it earlier instead of waiting and exacerbating things
The whole story is about how I should have taken care of the issue earlier and/or had dental insurance --Tasha
When my mom had me in the early 70s (no prenatal vitamins), she lost 3 teeth due to pregnancy.
Marleen G. Aww 😱😱😨
Pregnancy is so hard. That can be easy to forget sometimes. I'm sad to hear what happened. I hope it all turned out ok in the end. - Joseph
Very true, Joseph! Oh and don't worry, she's in her early 70s now and still ruling the roost. ;) She's had some dental work done and she's doing great, especially for her age!
