It's literally a gunner's bomber gets shot down. As he is falling towards that foreign field, he considers his life and his dream for the future. Then lies dead in the corner of that field.

The reference to 'blowing holes in bandsmen' stems from an IRA bombing of a bandstand in London where a military band was playing for the public. Many were killed that day. Relaxing on both sides of the tracks means you can enjoy a contrary opinion to those on the 'other side' without having to live in fear of retribution.

This album is Pink Floyd’s requiem for the Post-War (WWII) dream. As an American in London and Berlin in the 1980s I took note of the great frequency the “Post-War Dream” was referenced, but never in a positive way. A common turn of phrase was “Another victim of the post-war dream. The expectation at the end of WWII was that Great Britain would be able to turn away from the war economy and enjoy new-found prosperity as a nation, but more importantly that promises of increased social spending would deliver sincere and effective benefits to Britain’s working class. This promise was made and it failed to materialize so that while America poured money for reconstruction into post-war Europe the UK found itself spending heavily to try to preserve it’s dying empire. In colony after colony we see Britain being forced to terms by rising independence movements all while the new Cold War exasperates any hope of redirecting money from military spending to social programs. Labour manages to put mediocre stop-gap programs in place and does institute a National Health Service, but the lot of the working class is only nominally improved. Then came more war, all while conservatives were chopping off what social spending they could, shuttering industry and smashing unions. Depression, violence, suicide, addiction, alcoholism and unemployment replaced the unrealized post-war dream along with IRA terrorism in answer to British rule and the Falklands War where Thatcher relied on a navy that she had already made a deal to sell off.

It would've been a better album if all members of the band had been involved instead of just Roger Waters.
