@@some1stoleit i studied ancient latin for 8 years and modern green for 2. I am a language nerd and picked up the game easily. Namely, and this may be gibberish to you, but the eluridian language is analytic with slight synthetic components. In other words, the language only has some declinable nouns (namely reflexive words like asi asu.) and no conjugatable verbs (no verb tenses either which was the biggest sad of all), meaning word placement in sentences matters and subject verb object is the norm, which was a tad disappointing but made the game easy enough to not require a guide.

The language-puzzle in From Earth reminds me of having to learn the counting system and its associated symbols in Riven: The Sequel to Myst, so if you're intrigued by it you might consider giving that game a shot edit: this video was very enjoyable!
Thanks. I'll take a look at Riven. Some of those older puzzle games didn't hold your hand at all, sometimes you have to get a piece of paper out and start taking notes! Though you have to learn how to spot between the ones that are just unfair and the ones that give good challenge.
Riven is definitely one you'll want a notebook for. But the challenge is very fair and like real without being cheap. Nothing went unconsidered. I hope you enjoy it!
from earth is both weird and difficult but unique half-life 2 mod that will never get finished or get a proper dev team for a remake it basically feels like alien mirrors edge but adventure rather then action edit: the way that they made full body in source engine feels like similar or same as zeno clash
Excellent review man, you put me on to some hidden gems I skipped over! Thx for giving entropy zero 2 the attention it deserves, that mod is honestly a wonderful game in its own right. You got a new sub bro 👍
It was nice mod with good concept but too bad just it was too buggy(and I haven't any interest to play it...also, because the team was abandoned their well received HL2 mod - Human Error, after released EP1 and was teased EP2 on EP1's ending - to develop the From Earth mod...made me felt very weird when they released From Earth mod...), feel bad to them because the main dev seems suffered depression because of the mod's status according the latest and the last news post on the official website and then seems no more of updates(possible going to UE4 engine, not sure, since no more update after that last post, and nothing seems going on...), that's just too bad...
All the music put together for entropy zero is very impressive, not only sounding good but also falling right in line with music made for HL2 and the episodes. Very well done and and awesome video
Thanks! Other mods in the video had their own soundtrack. But Entropy Zero's one really stuck out for me. Was the only one o searched for outside the game

The channel started a few months ago. I'm really happy this is the first video to take off, other videos were about more niche games and VR. Things are definitely looking positive for the channel in 2023.
i actually remember playing From Earth, and checking my library apparently i played a bit of it a couple months after it came out, and the entire reason i recognized it was the prompt to fist bump Anthony also, a mod you missed that i remember enjoying was Transmissions: Element 120

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Could you elaborate what you mean about tightening up the audio, do you mean balancing the different sources or something else?
There was a mod called Bear Party: Adventure but it was removed from Steam. The reason I'm assuming is that the characters looked too much like the care bears and lawyers got involved. The mod is still on ModDB under the name Bisounorus Party. I don't know how different the mod version is from the Steam version. (I'm gonna link the mod as a reply for this comment just in case UA-cam wants to mark the link as spam. If you're not RonaldNand and you don't see the link, then I'm sure you can guess what happened.)
After playing both downward and year long alarm, I can say that its not really fair to lump both of them in. Thats simply because year long alarm isn't near as good compared to downward. Year long alarm feels like a pretty primitive and inconsistent mod whereas downward feels almost masterful with its level and encounter design. also play minerva metastasis if youre reading this, best mod ive ever played.
@@danielsurvivor1372 well part of it is set dressing. year long alarm can look pretty flat and amateurish at times and overall it just feels lacking in gameplay. All the fights you get in feel very disjointed and unrelated and the encounters and set design isnt that fun. Both give you the gravity gun but in year long alarm you hardly ever use it where in downward you have loads of objects to throw at enemies. Downward feels much more well tuned in its gameplay and its difficult in a way that forces you to find unique solutions to combat encounters.
I feel like you were a bit harsh on Logistique's platforming. I don't disagree that it felt awkward, but I also feel like you made it sound a lot more troubling than it actually is.
Yep, really the only issue is lack of directions due to meh level design and it lacks something, idk what, it doesn't DRAG per say, but the experience feels raw
Cool video man! I suggest getting some chill background music that you can cut in and out at certain times for effect as well as some more visual editing, a channel I can suggest that I think does this wonderfully but his subject is different so obviously you can’t copy and paste his model you’ll have to meld it to your model, his name is summoning salt and he reviews the history of speed running in various games. Keep up the great work my man, I subbed ❤
Thank you very much! I have been meaning to check out summoning salt actually, I'll see what from his style I could adapt. I'm a bit curious about what you mean by more visual editing? What specifically could I add?
@@some1stoleit it’s kind of hard to explain honestly, so I would have to imagine that’s in the eye of the beholder, some people have mascots or just ambient clips to break the pacing, but man it’s your channel you do whatever you want!
I remember playing the Wilson Chronicles a year-or-so back. If I remember correctly I had to noclip once or twice and one level load trigger didn’t work. During the entire game the HUD was not visible in the slightest because it was stretched off the screen. From what I’ve heard the game has been in development since like 2012 which I find bs. Afterwards I of course wrote a negative review and was ready to move on after giving my criticism. This would all be fine if not for the sole dev getting so angry he wrote 3 separate responses in the comments basically saying that it was my fault and insulting my review. To my knowledge he hasn’t fixed the load trigger bug or any of the others. To this day he responds to reviews blowing off any criticism by saying it’s in beta. Kinda sad ngl, had some good potential.
I think you forgot one mod, Transmissions: Element 120 Its a really cool mod set in HL2s universe with beautiful levels comparable to those seen in Fast Detect. But unlike fast detect its actually just fun as the puzzles are good and you get whats basically the AR2s secondary fire but as an unlimited gun.
Hi Ronald! Having played through these mods, I feel that your breakdowns of them are accurate and I really appreciated the points you raised. You have great taste! I'd love to hear more! Subbed! :]
First of all, you are much more lenient towards these mods than I was when I played them. If I had made such a video, I would have criticized them much more harshly and used the opportunity to "punish" some. Secondly, one can't help but get the impression that Valve is rolling the dice on whether or not a mod is included on Steam. Not only are there some mods that can be safely thrown off Steam, but several mods come to mind that would have deserved to be included instead.
I do lean towards positivity since they're free and there's so many videos trashing games out there. I think a mod dev has to apply at least for their mod to appear on steam, from there any technically functioning mod seems to be accepted given Arctic Adventures is on Steam. I reckon most modders have a enough pride to only add their mod if it's decent.
@@some1stoleit A Cry of Fear source remake was in work by the og dev, but it was cancelled for many reasons. You can find videos of the unfinished build though. The thing about monster design is that the low polycount actually adds to the uncanny and creepines, in words of the own creators they go far that particular look and its brilliant.
I don't have a problem with First Person Platforming as a concept. I've replayed Mirror's Edge a ton of times. I did try to get into surfing but could never get the hang of it. I think what really bugged me about Logistique was the low speed and level design in that bit.
@@some1stoleit If you feel the need to quicksave before every jump it's not a fun platforming experience for sure. Source has great platforming. Most of my memories are from Garry's Mod but Portal had some jumping parts too. TItanfall is made in Source but it's movement is completely different ig. But I can imagine in a custom mod it can be clunky. Half-Life 2 was not made for platforming. I guess after the bad reception of the platforming in half-life 1 they decided to keep it out of the game.
And I thought suffering through Arctic Adventures on normal *twice* was on my admittedly low skill on FPS games. I also thought I was being a little too hyperbolic when denouncing the plainess of the mod's arctic maps geometry. Oh boy.
@@some1stoleit Thanks for the reply! Yep, I went in trying to have a laugh and came out punished. Even then though, you stomached way, way more! Worth it at the end of the day. You seem to be taking off!
your voice could be a bit louder compared to the game audio, your voice-over is quiet in comparison. actually it's common to make cut-in game audio a bit quieter than the voice-over to make it more gentle. other than that, really nicely written and produced video, excellent work
I recently tried out From Earth. Although it’s a good idea, it’s probs a bit too ambitious and it feels rather too immersive and weighty for my taste. EDIT: Thought I’d add a little more to it. For some reason, the mod sorta takes me back to 2014-2016, where 2014-2015 wasn’t a god time for me in school, while 2016 was a much better and dream-like experience of sorta, and this game also gave me weird SOMA vibes, I dunno why but perhaps how the game has this in-game futuristic tech and it was also launched back around that time as well, that’s probably why. Also, what do you think of E.Y.E. Divine Cybermacy, another Source mod? I’m sure a lot of peeps are already familiar with it, but it’s sorta it’s own game that costs about €8 or $10, depending on where you at. It’s mixed, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. Personally, it looks interesting, but I’m still on the fence, plus it might be also a bit too immersive and a little too much for me as well. Most Half-Life mods are simple and chill, even the ones for Half-Life: Alyx (bless the Steam WorkShop) and most RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077, Deus Ex and Fallout are more my taste and just about the right type for me to immerse myself in with ease, whereas some others, well, yeah, I already said. Anyway, this has been a real great vid, very informative as well.
I played a small bit of EYE, it definitely seems like an intense experience. It's always been a game I've been meaning to get back into. I really love it when a game can tap into an alien/dreamlike atmosphere, somewhat rare for it to happen. I think From Earth could be one of those. Interesting to read your thoughts, glad you enjoyed the video.
@@some1stoleit yeah, I might give E.Y.E a shot this summer if it’s on sale. From Earth has potential, but I’d say if it helped trim down some of that weighty feel and improved a few aspects here and there, I’d say it would probs gather more peeps of sorts, if that helps. Sorry, I’m not really the best when it comes to thinking aloud, so to speak, but I appreciate the time you took to read my comment, thank you again. Here’s hoping more top-notch Half-Life mods hop onto Steam real soon.
Amazing video! i cannot belive you only have 176 subs! you deserve more :) the only "problems" with your video is that sometime we can barely hear you and the long silent pause with gameplay (maybe some calm/chill/whateveryouwant music in the background would be great?) other than that the video is really really good :) you gained a sub :) also will you make a review of popular modDB mods? (ex: Underhell, Nightmare House 2, Too many crates!, Age of Chivalry, Watching paint dry, ect...)
i didnt know a lotta mods here, thank you so much. your reviews helped a lot. underrated video, really. honestly the mechanism in logistique seems really different from typical half life mod, i like it. just got my attention, i think it has a big potential. also you didnt review hdtf(jk).
13:46 Not sure what's happening there! It almost looks like the map is trying to use the "Fullbright" setting. I don't think the game showed a user interface because you never ended up wearing the HEV Suit. Putting on the suit it is scripted to input the HUD. You can sometimes force it using sv_cheats 1 than cl_drawhud 1 command. This is happens with older broken mods and the HUD not loading.
The Forgotten Ones is an interesting one that you didn't include but it's not that great. It's quite similar to Cry Of Fear (HL1 mod), the typical horror mod with the inventory system like Resident Evil. Other than that, you did a pretty good job while reviewing all the mods. Surprisingly, I played all of them and the one I disliked the most was either Arctic Adventures or From Earth. The rest were very solid aside from Entropy Zero 1 and 2. The latter two are epic mods.
Forgotten ones looks interesting. Might give it a try. Might be worth a deep dive if it's interesting enough, Cry of Fear certainly is. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the analysis.
As someone who beat from earth twice The mod is great and the sheer interactions you can have are too,but the biggest problem is that you have literally zero sense of direction, while i personally love the mod,i hate some of the more obscure mechanics Also avoid attacking shields, they may break, but if the game temporarily freezes ,quit and wait
@@some1stoleit sorry for late reply, the story does finish on a cliffhanger regardless of which path you took, the only things that change is your outlook on the aliens overall, and the interactions with anthony For example, on pacifist you are mad at him being a murderous killer But on fighter (self defense) or notorious (psychopath)runs you dont really care And if you are notorious, aliens fear you and guards attack you on sight If you are a pacifist more aliens will like you If you are a fighter, its a mix of both
I really did like some of the story, but it sucks that it wasn't truly fleshed out, also in case anyone cares,in pacifst you can kill aliens giult free by placing them near a sawblade used for cutting your handcuffs, their death doesnt count as a kill, pretty helpful!
im not sure if this counts here or anything (espically since its not for free and it actually uses Portal 2 engine) but there is a game called "INFRA" which imo i found pretty interesting, pretty much failed to noticed that it even ran on source the first time. the starting part of this game may seem boring but imo it gets better somewhere after the Raft section.

Thank you for the kind words and all the best with your channel. Happy to chat more if you want.
Really nice video with neat concept, really does deserve more views. Only problem with it is the audio editing quality, which might be scaring some people off, you have too many audio cuts between lines. Normally you could do this in a video but the mic is picking up you gulping and taking breaths and clearing you throat every time which really just messes with everything. Plus even when it doesn't the pauses between each line disrupts the pacing and makes it way less enjoyable to listen to. Like at 2:05, there isn't any reason to have that pause there and it messes with the flow of the scene, especially since your mic picks up you moving your tongue it makes a weird abrupt cut to the noise. It's just a very artificial cut in the video where you instead could have just kept talking. Otherwise, everything else is pretty good, and feel free to ask about anything else about the video or for clarification on what I'm trying to say here, would love to help you on that. Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. I'm getting some new audio equipment and learning how to use some audio editing equipment so next videos should have better audio. Especially to get rid of background noises, I want to get an automated way to get rid of them. I was doing it manually so I wouldn't catch them all. Audio is the most challenging thing I've had to learn. Check out my Filcher video is you want to see how bad it was at first. I'll try cutting out the pauses. I thought leaving them in would make better pacing but most feedback is that they make things sound unnatural.

The language-puzzle in From Earth reminds me of having to learn the counting system and its associated symbols in Riven: The Sequel to Myst, so if you're intrigued by it you might consider giving that game a shot
edit: this video was very enjoyable!
From Earth was such an incredible game, I wish it got the attention it deserved... well worth the time it took to learn it’s unique mechanics.
from earth is both weird and difficult but unique half-life 2 mod that will never get finished or get a proper dev team for a remake
it basically feels like alien mirrors edge but adventure rather then action

Excellent review man, you put me on to some hidden gems I skipped over! Thx for giving entropy zero 2 the attention it deserves, that mod is honestly a wonderful game in its own right. You got a new sub bro 👍
From Earth sounds amazing. Can't believe there aren't more games with that concept, it's so interesting.
The video seems to have directed a few others to play it. I'm really happy the video brought some light to From Earth.
It was nice mod with good concept but too bad just it was too buggy(and I haven't any interest to play it...also, because the team was abandoned their well received HL2 mod - Human Error, after released EP1 and was teased EP2 on EP1's ending - to develop the From Earth mod...made me felt very weird when they released From Earth mod...), feel bad to them because the main dev seems suffered depression because of the mod's status according the latest and the last news post on the official website and then seems no more of updates(possible going to UE4 engine, not sure, since no more update after that last post, and nothing seems going on...), that's just too bad...
great video man! I love Amalgam and Minerva, and Entropy Zero 1 and 2. All are just so good.
All the music put together for entropy zero is very impressive, not only sounding good but also falling right in line with music made for HL2 and the episodes. Very well done and and awesome video

There was a mod called Bear Party: Adventure but it was removed from Steam. The reason I'm assuming is that the characters looked too much like the care bears and lawyers got involved.
The mod is still on ModDB under the name Bisounorus Party. I don't know how different the mod version is from the Steam version.

From Earth is so underrated. I finished and enjoyed it. I'm glad it was mentioned
O Patto Patto!
Ain't no way, the level designs are THAT different between the two? Can you give us a few examples? 😅

I think you forgot one mod, Transmissions: Element 120
Its a really cool mod set in HL2s universe with beautiful levels comparable to those seen in Fast Detect. But unlike fast detect its actually just fun as the puzzles are good and you get whats basically the AR2s secondary fire but as an unlimited gun.

Good video from a small channel, subbed for me to expect more reviews from you

Very sad that many god-tier HL 1 mods never got remade/remastered in HL 2 like They Hunger...
I would've loved to see Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear in Source, monster design was so good imagine what they could do in source.

Personally I like first person platforming. If you're familiar with how movement in Source works it's actually really fun
Oh boy.

No trouble. Jolly's videos lean more towards humour and less analysis. So I guess mine can balance alongside his.
your voice could be a bit louder compared to the game audio, your voice-over is quiet in comparison. actually it's common to make cut-in game audio a bit quieter than the voice-over to make it more gentle.
other than that, really nicely written and produced video, excellent work
Thank you. Audio mixing is something I've had to improve alot quickly. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the next video when I'm balancing.
Sorry, I’m not really the best when it comes to thinking aloud, so to speak, but I appreciate the time you took to read my comment, thank you again. also you didnt review hdtf(jk).
Thanks, glad to have helped. My goal was to get some attention on these mods, especially the very obscure ones like From Earth.

Also avoid attacking shields, they may break, but if the game temporarily freezes ,quit and wait
Ah you beat the mod! Does the story finish or does it end on a cliffhanger?
@@some1stoleit sorry for late reply, the story does finish on a cliffhanger regardless of which path you took, the only things that change is your outlook on the aliens overall, and the interactions with anthony
For example, on pacifist you are mad at him being a murderous killer
But on fighter (self defense) or notorious (psychopath)runs you dont really care
And if you are notorious, aliens fear you and guards attack you on sight
If you are a pacifist more aliens will like you
If you are a fighter, its a mix of both
I really did like some of the story, but it sucks that it wasn't truly fleshed out, also in case anyone cares,in pacifst you can kill aliens giult free by placing them near a sawblade used for cutting your handcuffs, their death doesnt count as a kill, pretty helpful!

Hey, I really liked your video. I recommend keeping some slight background noise (whether it be game noise from your clips or stock music) while you're commentating. It makes it far less obvious where your narration takes start and stop.

@@mediocrecontent2449 I had a quick look at your channel. You present well, could improve your audio and make your visuals more interesting. You seem to cover more niche games, which is fine if that's what your passionate about making. If you don't enjoy making the video it won't turn out good so I would never recommend playing something more popular but you don't like playing.
Have your tried any self promotion on Reddit or communities where the game is played? I think this video wouldn't have done nearly as well if I didn't do a little self promotion on Reddit. I think it got shared on a modding site but can't find the post.
Anyways you've been at making videos for a while so I'm guessing you enjoy making them regardless of views.
