This is SO BEAUTIFUL.It took me back to my early teens and I couldn't help shedding a tear. Paul Winter Consort has been among my favorite groups ever. Their music wasn't called New Age then. It was, and is, simply very good music. And it gives you so much peace...
I agree. Stunningly simple, heavenly, beautiful. Just remembered it this beautiful November in New England morning. I remember hearing it for the first time in the early 80s. Thank you to all musicians who are born, write this beautiful music and then leave it behind for the ages.
This song always makes me think of Pete Fornatale (RIP). Theme song for Mixed Bag on WNEW-FM and later, on WFUV-FM (both in NY). And that memory makes me cry every time!
The Same thing in Mexico city, the XH-POP FM 99.3 mHz, this song was the ID of this radio station, dissapears in the middle of the 80's after the Mexico city's earthquake. :'(
Ah this brings me back to the days of WNEW in the 70's! They'd play this at the 6 o'clock hour and I knew it was time to go home from work, It was themost wonderful sound of the days.... still is!
I agree. This is truly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. In the 70's there was a radio station (in México city) that used this song like an identificatión. I heard this station just for a little fragment of this song. Lately I listened it in my uncle´s house. The next day I brought this LP and it is one of my greatest treasures.
We shared many years together me listening to your great and inspiring songs you picked for our enjoyment. Thanks for "Mixed Bag" and everything you did to get the music on radio. R.I.P. my friend. You will be sorely missed.
This song (favorite because of him) will always be Pete Fornatale's theme song. Thank you for all of the music that I learned to love because of you and Mixed Bag. And that about wraps it up for rhis week's show. Rest in Peace.
I just came here to hear this joyful sound again. It’s been a long time favorite. I’m finally going to the solstice concert at St John the Divine this year.
Lovely, inspiring, at once both relaxing and energizing. Receive music at face value without too much analysis, thereby allowing a more organic imagery to emerge from what the Creator gave to heterodyne with the paths one has walked...this, to me, is true art from the soul. Thank you for sharing this music...absolutely stunning!
I saw the PaulWinterConsort perform at the FillmoreEast in NYC around 1970 and they were fantastic, were the warm up band for Blood Sweat & Tears and I thought they stole the show! Been a fan of Oregon now for a long time, & huge fan of RslphTowner's guitar playing.
What a trip. I love this song. I saw them perform several times during the early 70's. How coincidental is the fact that we both appreciate PWC. I am Tim Lee too!!!
At the NYS Museum in Albany, there was a film shown in the theatre that ran every 40 minutes or so. This song was played a few times during the film. It had me look this tune up and I have always loved to hear this song.
Thank you chazzbro. I've been searching for this track for ages. Stunning in its beauty and simplicity. It's the music of spirits at play. Reminds me of that and anything that reminds you that you're not an body is wonderful. Thanks again.
Muchos recuerdos. XHPOP música feliz 99
I remember reading years ago that one of the Apollo astronauts ( I forget which one) took a selection of recordings with him to the moon, and "Icarus" was one that he played while he was there. How many human tunes, or how few, have been played on the surface of another world? Interesting choice from a modernday Icarus.
Paul winter consort did the audio for little tree? I had it on cassette. Fav was the crazy town where madness was common, frequently homicidal... And the strings sounded like wicked and crazy laughter. Shitty revelations on the author and content but damn good memories from my youth
@noizenconfusion It depends. My children have listened Icarus (and every kind of music) since my wife was pregnant. Now they are 19, 18 and14 and they like any kind of music included the most recent hits, but they have like favorites orchestral versions.
If any one can lead me to any UA-cam of any early 70's Winter Consort. I'd appreciate it. this song reminds me so much of my teenage years as does most early Winter Consort. I guess I want to relive my teenage years for a moment in time.
I saw them in the mid 80's at the Cincinnati zoo of all places. While they were performing in the area where the seals and penguins put on shows for me as a school kid in the early 70's, the barn swallows flushed out of their nests in the area and circled the band as they performed. When Paul Winter realized what was happening, he closed his eyes and held out his arms from his sides and beamed as the barn swallows circled him and the band, mid-song. What a moment.
Manhattan, NYC Cathedral Saint John the Divine Circa 1993 As if the setting were not moving enough... Transported to another place and time was I, taken where I'd not been before, never again to be the same, slipping through some cosmic door
Sorry it is not semantics, it is a matter of music theory and musicology. It is a matter of definition. The musical definition of what a song is, does not require vocals. And where in musical history does the word song come from the word sing, exactly? This is not a matter of argument, I seriously would like to know the etymology of it and how it relates to the definition of what a song is.....
Hey dare 2215bee, For sure, Metheny must've been inspired by this, as was I to take more 'arty farty' B&W home processed photos. tonywilmers2016@gmail.com.au
for an interesting take on this song check out the Larry Fast/Synergy version: ua-cam.com/video/u7iASuK7jYU/v-deo.html It was my first exposure to the song and ends up as the one I compare others too. Working on my own analog synth take on it as well.

I was fortunate to be their production manager for two years,..Great people and the greatest experience of my career!..
Its an honor Sir.

Yep. Pete's WNEW FM sunday morning outro theme leading into news and then 'Idiot's Delight' with Vin Scelsa.
The Same thing in Mexico city, the XH-POP FM 99.3 mHz, this song was the ID of this radio station, dissapears in the middle of the 80's after the Mexico city's earthquake. :'(
Me too, it makes me cry every time. I miss him.

@srknight2, Pete Fornatale used this as his closing for his show on Saturday afternoons, iirc. I loved his show, always good folk music.
I agree. This is truly one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life.

Saw them play this probably late sixties. It still sounds wonderful.
Brings back memories of Mixed Bag with Pete Fornitale on WNEW FM.
I just came here to hear this joyful sound again. It’s been a long time favorite. I’m finally going to the solstice concert at St John the Divine this year.
I met Paul, Ralph, Bruce and Susan Osborn there.
A different mix than the recording on the original LP - which I still own. The difference is not an improvement.
My personal theme song for many years, the one that made me dance and sway in my living room. So full of joy and hope!
Between "Icarus" and "Linus and Lucy" I have to say the chills always come from "Icarus", The childhood memories come from "Linus and Lucy".
Lovely, inspiring, at once both relaxing and energizing. Receive music at face value without too much analysis, thereby allowing a more organic imagery to emerge from what the Creator gave to heterodyne with the paths one has walked...this, to me, is true art from the soul. Saw them live twice. My ex...who had some MAJOR issues to heal...found their music healing and calming. Me, too.
Rediscovering this music is almost as good as the first time, although bitter sweet. Thanks

Talk about music to conjur with--bittersweet for sure.
What a trip. I love this song. I saw them perform several times during the early 70's. How coincidental is the fact that we both appreciate PWC. I am Tim Lee too!!!

I saw them at the Fillmore opening for Procol Harum, I was stunned, amazing around 1972
Fórmula melodica
So beautiful...takes me back to youthful days and simultaneusly it leads my melody soul beyond time and space..
Literally, "me too" ! I had this and lost it around 1975. My favourite song ever by any of the various Paul Winter Consort(s)
I remember listen to this in 1973. Timless
I used to love going to see these guys play at St. John the Devine during the eighties. Magical stuff.
Who would think this music is almost 40 years old? so beautiful-
I remember first hearing this in 1975 when I was 14 or so. It became a part of my bone marrow, and I carry it wherever I go.
long time. I remember. Saw them at Center Stage in Baltimore, MD in early 70's. Beautiful and timeless.
I have been looking for this for ages. Ironically, it was my brother, chas' influence that found this song for me. Thank you!
Seen the Winter Consort performed this live when it first came
out. Ever since then, it has always allowed me to loose my mind and come to my senses.
I've been looking for the "Road" album for ages! Thanks for posting this!!

I saw this song played in concert by Paul Winter in the Fall of 1973 at the University of New Hampshire.
I saw them live at the Fillmore East in 1970 or 71. That’s when I fell in love with this song.
Saw them at University of Toledo student union in 1970-ish. Influenced me then and still.
Ralph Towner also has a great recording of Icarus where he plays both piano and guitar via overdubbing. Give it a listen.

Everything happens for a reason, yet it takes time to process that reason. Don't give up.
Amo está canción 😘
Hola

Inspiring composition. I am discovering Ralph Towner and it's going to be a great adventure!

Great song and a great album. R I P Sir George Martin.
Beautiful
I heard that Ralph Towner harbored some resentment that this became Paul Winter's signature number and he got little credit for composition.

MESTRES DA GUITARRA❤
I was lucky to hear the Consort live in Granada (Spain) about ... 24 years ago???
Nice! I remember seeing them circa 1977!

I saw them at Zoo Atlanta! Got to shake Paul's hand, Got his autograph on a paper napkin but I think my ex threw it our by accident, darn -
Glass smooth.

Songs have words, this is a piece or work of music and can not truly be considered a "song."
I would love to hear Paul Winter do "White Bird".

Early 70's - Guttenberg New Jersey. So far away
Amazing
You have to listen how the chello sings and dialog with the sax. It's a great song
