And the only weapon which can give competition to Gandiva bow is Vijaya Bow, Karna's bow. That is why he choosed Karna. It is kind of redemption story for both Karna and Ashwatthama. They both fought from Adharma (bad) side now they have chance to redeem themselves. Lord Krishna was also born in prison. Krishna's mother Devaki was sister of the king Kansa. One day an oracle told Kansa that the eighth son of Devaki would be the one to kill him and end his rule. Terrified of this, he imprisoned Devaki and her husband and killed 7 of their child. But during Krishna's birth something divine happened, the doors of prison cell which were all locked and protected by guards opened magically and all the guards were unconscious. A bright light filled the prison and Vasudeva was woken up by a divine voice that guided him to take Krishna across the Yamuna. I just wanted to put out one more thing here, about Kashi, how Bhairava character is said and shown to be the savior of Kashi to misguide audience of course but isn't Bhairav who is part of Shiva, actually said to be guarding Kashi which is said to be one of Shiva's favorite places. So just a disclaimer to both u, this movie is based on "Kalki puran" this is a book which is said to be the actual depiction of the future and how it will end according to hindu mythology. This movie is derivative of that idea not completely though they changed bits here and there but mostly it captures the book's depiction.

Due to which the way of thinking of people and the coming generation has changed and every effort has been made to do this deliberately. But some truths can never change that there were many great warriors at that time, there is no doubt about it. But Mahabharata was a religious war. Star Plus Mahabharat is absolute Trash and highly imaginative version of the True Epic . It is better they watch BR Chopra's Mahabharat which is more grounded in the epic.

Mahabharat related background (long read but bear with me): (spoiler alert for part 3) - The warriors in the Epic were mostly super human by brith, however each one had to strive hard to reach their true potential. - Arjun's mother 'Kunti' received a boon that she could conceive child from Devas/Gods (Indra/Zeus, Surya/Sun, etc..) - Curiosity, if it works, she tried it with Surya/Sun. And it happened. However, since she wasn't married, she was impregnated through navel making her a vigin mother.. (Holy mother Mary!). That's how she had 'KARNA (Karn ah)', son of Surya. He was born with protective sheild, couldn't be killed with it (yeah more later, since he died in battle). She abandoned the child. He was later raised by adopted parents (ring a bell with Bhairava?) - Karna's guru is Parushuram, a Vishnu avataar with very very long life who became a warrior-sage, eventually retiring and teaching non-Kshatriya (royal/warrior clan) the art of warfare and divine weapons. Karna is truly a Kshatriya and unintentionally deceived his guru. Resulting in Karna being mostly unsuccesful in his quests (curse of a Guru) - Arjun, one of the 5 Pandava brothers : He was born to Kunti after she married the King Pandu. Lot of back story here which I will skip. Since Pandu and his wives weren't having children, Kunti used the boon to get 3 children and shared the boon with Pandu's 2nd wife to get 2 more. Total of 5 children of Pandu - the 5 Pandavas. Arjun is the boon child of Indra (Zeus equivalent). Their cousins are called "Kauravas", there were 101 of them, 100 sons and 1 daughter - also not naturally born (some ancient genetic incubation stuff) - Ashwatthama (Amitabh's character): He was a boon child too. His father Drona did penance to Shiva for an immortal child. He was born with a "mani" (gem stone) on forehead (you must be thinking VISION :D ). The gemstone gave him powers that made him almost invincible. The movie conveys the right story of removal of the gem by Krishna. He is believed to be alive and awating the next full avataar of Vishnu - Kalki. - Why is Amitabh a Giant?: Well aparently, the humans in the era of Mahabharat were upto 12 feet tall and had a long life span. That is probably the reason they showed Amitabh as a Giant. It will be interesting to see if they maintain that with other characters in flashback of Mahabharat. - Karna vs Arjun (Hector vs Achilies): Karna's character as per the TV series, shows him as a person who had potential but couldn't achieve due to circumstances. This charaterisation connect with many and I was a big fan. He was my 'Hector' of Troy. However, I learnt with time that, it was not a true depiction. The scripture doesn't give benefit of doubt to Karna, or suggest that he was better than Arjun. On the contrary, Arjun despite being very good always strived hard to gain more knowledge and power. Making him the best warrior on the field. For the sake of entertainment and creative connect, let's say big brother Karna was as good or better than Arjun as the movie and TV series claim. However, Arjun killed Karna when he was unarmed and did not posses his protective shield he was born with.

It's also believed that the influence of Kali, a demonic entity, increases during this time, leading to a deterioration of human behavior and social order.
So, according to some beliefs KALKI the final Avatar of Lord Vishnu is prophesied to appear at the end of Kali Yuga, the current age, when the world is ruled by the unjust and virtue and dharma have disappeared. Kalki will destroy the wicked and usher in a new age of purity, truth, and righteousness, called Satya Yuga.
So, the Director Nag Ashwin had the idea that what if Ashawatthama is still alive and he is watching all these things throughout the history and waiting for the Kalki Avatar so that he can redeem himself.
Ashwatthama was cursed because he attacked an unborn child. So here in this story/movie, he is given the task to protect an unborn child( The Kalki Avatar).
About Bhairava/ Karna character.
In each Yuga when Shri Vishnu takes Avatar the other Devas(Deities of diffrent elements) also takes birth to support The Vishnu Avatar, they are called Ansh (partial) Avatars/Demigods.
A partial avatar, or a manifestation of a deity with partial godly powers.
In Mahabharata all Pandavas were partial avatars of different deities. Even Ashwatthama was partial Avatar of Shiva.
Karna is one of the main protagonists/ antagonist of the Hindu epic Mahābhārata. He is the son of the sun god Surya and princess Kunti (mother of the Pandavas), and thus a demigod of royal birth.
Kunti was granted the boon to bear a child with desired divine qualities from the gods and without much knowledge, Kunti invoked the sun god to confirm it if it was true indeed. Karna was secretly born to an unmarried Kunti in her teenage years, and fearing outrage and backlash from society over her premarital pregnancy, Kunti had to abandon the newly born Karna adrift in a basket on the Ganges.
Karna was the loyal friend of the main antagonist of Mahabharata, Duryodhana.
Some people sees Karna as a tragic hero in the Mahabharata, in a manner similar to "flawed good man".
Karna meets his biological mother late in the epic, and then discovers that he is the elder maternal half-brother of those he is fighting against.
He fought from the Adharma side and was killed by Arjuna in battle.
There were many reference of Bhairava being Karna reincarnation in movie, the captain found him in basket,in introduction scene sunlight on him, when Bhairava was taking to card reader ,the sun card appears.
About Gandiva bow, it was the bow of Arjuna, created by The Brahma. The bow is described as massive, radiant, and capable of unleashing a rain of arrows. It is said to have 108 strings made of cosmic elements, and was impossible to break.
And the Vijaya Dhanush(Bow) was Karna's bow. The Vijaya bow, or Vijaya Dhanusha, is a divine bow in Hindu mythology that is said to guarantee victory to its wielder. The bow was created by Vishvakarma, the architect of the gods, for Shiva.
So director had the idea that if he had to show that the Kalki Avatar is in danger. The villain has to be strong. So he gave the villain Ansh(part) of God and Gandiva bow(most powerful weapon). And the only weapon which can give competition to Gandiva bow is Vijaya Bow, Karna's bow. That is why he choosed Karna.
It is kind of redemption story for both Karna and Ashwatthama. They both fought from Adharma (bad) side now they have chance to redeem themselves.
Lord Krishna was also born in prison. Krishna's mother Devaki was sister of the king Kansa. One day an oracle told Kansa that the eighth son of Devaki would be the one to kill him and end his rule. Terrified of this, he imprisoned Devaki and her husband and killed 7 of their child.
But during Krishna's birth something divine happened, the doors of prison cell which were all locked and protected by guards opened magically and all the guards were unconscious.
A bright light filled the prison and Vasudeva was woken up by a divine voice that guided him to take Krishna across the Yamuna.
Therefore, in order to protect lord Krishna, his father Vasudev carried him in a basket across the raging River Yamuna to Vrindavan. There Krishna was adopted and brought up by Yashoda and Nanda.
It was a dark night with heavy rain and flooded Yamuna. There was another miracle that to give path to Vasudev and Krishna, the river Yamuna parted his waves. And a multi headed serpent protected them from heavy rain.
Director Nag Ashwin took direct inspiration from this to show SUM 80 escape from complex. This time he showed fire parted to give path to the mother of the Avatar.

I just wanted to put out one more thing here, about Kashi, how Bhairava character is said and shown to be the savior of Kashi to misguide audience of course but isn't Bhairav who is part of Shiva, actually said to be guarding Kashi which is said to be one of Shiva's favorite places. I was waiting for that connection but it seemed to be too simple for the makers.

Like in Interstellar they showed 1 day = 7 years is one of the reference of Brahma's time. So, 4,32,000 Brahma years means around 1000 years from now. Or even less than that. That's why the title 2898 AD as it's the estimated timeline after some math done by the movie research team.!!

So just a disclaimer to both u, this movie is based on "Kalki puran" this is a book which is said to be the actual depiction of the future and how it will end according to hindu mythology. To clarify, this doesn't fully align with the Mahabharata-it's probably less than 10% accurate. The only parts that stay true to the original are the beginning and the curse given by Lord Krishna. The rest has been heavily fictionalized and altered by the creators. The Arjun vs. Karna conflict is particularly exaggerated to position Prabhas as the main hero. In the actual Mahabharata, characters like Ashwatthama, and Karna had more complex roles and were portrayed with shades of antagonism.

So karna and Ashwatthama were part of adharma and to set a role that even Arjun is Arjun bcz he is krishna's devotee and krishna is always standing beside him whereas karna took friendship of Duryodhan (symbol of all adharm) which became cause of his destruction and that's why Arjun is a superior warrior in terms of heroism and prowess which is protrayed completely opposite in this film. Karna is shown as a savior and hero.

Apart from Mahabharata scenes rest of movie specially prabhas pre karna reveal character building was bad ,and other scenes just average.
Mahabharat related background (long read but bear with me): (spoiler alert for part 3)
- The warriors in the Epic were mostly super human by brith, however each one had to strive hard to reach their true potential.
- Arjun's mother 'Kunti' received a boon that she could conceive child from Devas/Gods (Indra/Zeus, Surya/Sun, etc..)
- Curiosity, if it works, she tried it with Surya/Sun. And it happened. However, since she wasn't married, she was impregnated through navel making her a vigin mother.. (Holy mother Mary!). That's how she had 'KARNA (Karn ah)', son of Surya. He was born with protective sheild, couldn't be killed with it (yeah more later, since he died in battle). She abandoned the child. He was later raised by adopted parents (ring a bell with Bhairava?)
- Karna's guru is Parushuram, a Vishnu avataar with very very long life who became a warrior-sage, eventually retiring and teaching non-Kshatriya (royal/warrior clan) the art of warfare and divine weapons. Karna is truly a Kshatriya and unintentionally deceived his guru. Resulting in Karna being mostly unsuccesful in his quests (curse of a Guru)
- Arjun, one of the 5 Pandava brothers : He was born to Kunti after she married the King Pandu. Lot of back story here which I will skip. Since Pandu and his wives weren't having children, Kunti used the boon to get 3 children and shared the boon with Pandu's 2nd wife to get 2 more. Total of 5 children of Pandu - the 5 Pandavas. Arjun is the boon child of Indra (Zeus equivalent). Their cousins are called "Kauravas", there were 101 of them, 100 sons and 1 daughter - also not naturally born (some ancient genetic incubation stuff)
- Ashwatthama (Amitabh's character): He was a boon child too. His father Drona did penance to Shiva for an immortal child. He was born with a "mani" (gem stone) on forehead (you must be thinking VISION :D ). The gemstone gave him powers that made him almost invincible. The movie conveys the right story of removal of the gem by Krishna. He is believed to be alive and awating the next full avataar of Vishnu - Kalki.
- Why is Amitabh a Giant?: Well aparently, the humans in the era of Mahabharat were upto 12 feet tall and had a long life span. That is probably the reason they showed Amitabh as a Giant. It will be interesting to see if they maintain that with other characters in flashback of Mahabharat.
- Karna vs Arjun (Hector vs Achilies):
Karna's character as per the TV series, shows him as a person who had potential but couldn't achieve due to circumstances. This charaterisation connect with many and I was a big fan. He was my 'Hector' of Troy.
However, I learnt with time that, it was not a true depiction. The scripture doesn't give benefit of doubt to Karna, or suggest that he was better than Arjun. On the contrary, Arjun despite being very good always strived hard to gain more knowledge and power. Making him the best warrior on the field.
For the sake of entertainment and creative connect, let's say big brother Karna was as good or better than Arjun as the movie and TV series claim. However, Arjun killed Karna when he was unarmed and did not posses his protective shield he was born with.
