Painting Black & White Portraits | An AIRBRUSH Tutorial

  • Painting portraits in monochrome is a great exercise in value study. Since there are no colors used besides black and white, you get to focus all of your attention on values and how they mold and sculpt the structures of the face. In this first part we will be painting in both eyes, the eyebrows, the nose, and setting up some of the values within the cheeks. You will notice in this portrait that the black and white mixtures gives this overall painting a cooler temperature than one completed in just transparent black. I will follow this tutorial up with another grisaille just using a transparent black so that you can see the difference between the two techniques. This painting is a 24x18" canvas stretched over a wooden panel, prepared smooth with liquitex super heavy gesso. Thanks for watching!

I have watched many of your videos in the past few days and I am really excited to start my journey on airbrush. Each surface will require different pressure for removing paint. Something you just have to experiment with until your comfortable. I stick with gessoed surfaces like canvas, panel, or cotton paper so that it's basically all the same feeling and techniques. Just makes it easier for me. Hope this helps!

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  8 днів тому +1

      If you spay a light amount of acrylic paint on a very smooth surface you will be able to erase and scratch into it. Some paints work much better than others. Most of the acrylic inks work very well like schminke aero colors, liquitex ink, etc. Createx illustration colors work exceptionally well for these techniques.

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  7 місяців тому

      That is how I used to paint with an airbrush. I did it that way for many years. I found the odd color shifts difficult to manage when spraying opaque colors to lighten areas. It's also difficult to get a specular highlight as bring as paper or gesso with an airbrush, since layers are sprayed so thinly. I do still use a technique like that for oil painting and traditional paint brushes.
