- Directed by Doug Evans, Founder of Juicero and former CEO of Organic Avenue and Alan Pottasch of AMP Films. This was an interview that we did with Steve back in 1993 about Paul Rand.
It is amazing how similar Steve and Paul were.
Doug Evans
I could listen to Steve Jobs for hours. What fascinates me most about him are his failures. He really knows how to move on, learn from your experience, and remain undeterred in your vision. He received so many invaluable lessons through his failures. Amazing.
Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to be a Paul Rand. Don't be afraid of your clients. If they don't respect you or feel you're not good enough, you don't need them.
I love the pauses. He really THINKS about what he is going to say - rather than just filling space with hot air.
I think that, for once, Steve Jobs met someone like himself, and got told "No." And he respects that. An artist who solves business problems.
In the many interviews I've seen with Steve Jobs, there is one thing he does consistently that I don't see a lot of other people do.
When asked a question, he always leaves a moment of silence while he thinks of the answer. Different than most that try to start answering as soon as possible without really thinking it through.
And yet. It is probably often cut out of his and other similar people’s interviews.
I've seen Kanye West do this
And very rare ‘hhhhnnnn’
I've seen Elon Musk also pause like this sometimes. Especially when it's something that he hasn't been asked a million times and has a cookie cutter answer for.
I've noticed that too ! He was such a genius and had really great communication skills. ❤
Steve is obviously a deep thinker himself. He's one of those people who takes time to consider the best way to phrase his response before retorting - rather than what most of us do: saying 'um' 'er' 'it's kinda..'
i am so enthusiastic for learning from people like steve j. i just feel extremely passionate about being in touch with such people.

I love this guy ! I especially love his pauses, and how he takes time to phrase what he's about to say, very inspirational for me.. such a pure genius, love him a whole lot. ❤
Really like the positive talking of Steve it gives progress in thinking about the talked subject positive thinking gives results in acting, love it, thanks Steve and life along in mind and memory
I love steve's dramatic pauses in his speaking. Not immediately after a question was asked, but mid sentence where he'd stop, and put together his next lines very masterfully. Also notable in his opinion of Microsoft around this era.
I like the pauses, when SJ is taking time to think of his answer and make it meaningful. Cool. :)
This interview shows one thing clearly; Jobs didn't know alot about graphic design and design in generell as alot of his former colleagues stated, but he had the intellectual capability to recognize its traits and appreciate them for what they are not being coscience about it, that those are fundamentals. Alot of the things he describes here talking about Rand is the absolute basic graphic design.
May be he knew just enough to go great things. Many people know too much but do nothing.
That's what I said.

"would you give us a few options?" "NOOOOOOO!!!" : Paul Rand.

Steve Jobs just had some magic
I would've really liked to see what the Milton Glaser part was about ...
Nice insight into brand building
As an engineer, I love the part about bringing solutions to a client, not options. After all, the client wants a problem solved, and a good engineer is able to instinctively know which "option" is best and worth exploring. So one might as well stop wasting anybody's time and just doing the right thing, instead of having the client choose between multiple alternatives.
"how would you describe his principles?" 4:26 - 4:33 (beach ball spinning) "Paul is a very interesting"(beach ball spinning) 4:35 - "interesting"(beach ball spinning) 4:43 LOL, I'm just kidding I loved steve and I am a mac, but got to admit it was kinda funny lol
raxotube hahaha I agree!
thank you.
3:10 paul rand is a badass
Steve seems to describe his own attributes
Yeah, I think so, too.
thanks for uploading this!

This is great! Thanks for posting.
This is interesting because of the fact that IBM had Paul Rand do their logo, and now Steve Jobs went and had Paul Rand redo Apples. Both were competitors since the begging of the making of Apple. Besides the fact, Paul Rand was a smart man with design assets that could solve any problem.
brilliant insight into the mind of a genius
Legend on another.
Very interesting. Praise our lord and savior, O Steve Jobs.
God I wish I was at that level where I could say to a client "No you don't know your talking about, you don't have taste or know what good design is, I'm going to give you something, your going to use it and you have no say in it's design or revisions and I'm not going to do an endless back and forth with you and that's it.
You merely have to decide that you are on that level, after putting the work in to back it up.
Two years before I was born.
this is raw footage, which is why there are pregnant pauses before SJ answers the questions. These are usually edited out, unless it's for drama. The take-away is don't be afraid to think long and hard before speaking when answering a question while cameras are rolling! It's way different when it's a live interview. SJ and Paul Rand are amazing, as is my friend Doug Evans who orchestrated this interview.

i love the way the steve jobs think
two geniuses.
Paul is a legend
@xr0 He is not talking about the Apple logo. He is talking about the NeXT logo.
3:10 is Gold : )
@PabloNeirotti Since NeXT was founded in 1985, they were ahead of their time, then.
Can’t watch a Jobs vid without thinking of Woz in the Hood
Jobs has always been years ahead of his contemporaries. He had that weirdo page boy haircut years before it was popularized by Javier Bardem! : )
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cameraman was playing with the camera for sure
His logo may look dated now, but I could see it as one of those logo's I grew up seeing. If it really looked dated they could update this, though you want a logo to last over time, sometimes they need to change.
1993 to be exact
@kurt05051987 I believe he was talking about the [eye] [bee] M poster, which was unclear from his response.
Steve jobs knows what logo is.
i like it
Pink chaina #british got talent #moon with Rose's
I always thought the Next symbol was crap. I think Steve bought into the emperors cloths on this one, no doubt because he was fresh from the sting of leaving Apple and he didn't want to be a boat rocker at the time.
3:10 -- awesome

Deep gratitude for all you have done for me, big apologies for not being able to clarify the whole misunderstanding that took place in a proper way, i appreciate very much for giving such a precious opportunity and valuable experience, until tomorrow good night have an excellent day
Jesus....i thought he was on about Rand Paul til i read the script again...lol....R.I.P. Steve Jobs...from an Android user......it's all about respect for innovators across the board of tech-land....it doesn't matter who you link up with.....RESPECT...as in the game of football(soccer)
That background noise…
THIS AINT ONLY ABOUT STEVE JOBS, ITS ABOUT PAUL RAND TOO
Interesting...
@nfoo Support. I respect Steve Jobs a lot. He's gone through a lot too :\

I don't know about you guys but he looks a lot like PC from the PC vs Mac ads in this vid. :P
gr8t
So he made an apple for a company named Apple. He's obviously a huge genious.
@nfoo Well said sir :D some people just dont get it, but that fine, leave them with their error ridden Windows...
No much zoom. Can't the cameraman zoom more?

I'd like to reference this for an essay I am writing for uni, Can you provide any referencing information like where your sourced this interview, and who conducted it and when? Thank you very much!
it's like watching a bizarro bill hicks
4:30 my fellow dotcom
Rand Paul ? I never attacked him on his looks.
And believe my there's plenty of subject matter right here. That I can tell you.
his dresser was probably filled with the same ensemble over and over. he's like Monk
If you had a client approach you and he had a business that needed a branding, but you see it as the failure it will become in a year or two, do you turn it down?
Joshua Kleckner most of the businesses have higher chances of failure (fact), so we (as designers) shouldnt bother, it is not our headache. We should be more focused on our quality of work and the income we are generating from that project. Along with money, we should also see the profile of the client you are serving, he might bring more projects to you in future (very rare).
And yet, he still wears the same clothing.... he must have his closet full of the same shirt and pants... he even brands his image... Steve is good.
I miss you, Steve. Fuck cancer.
What makes him a genius? After so many years in the worlds most important product (computer) industry, what has he brought to us? Ipod?
No iphone
Ipad
Imac
He invisioned a more useable interface and a more media purposeful devices but a lot of the technical work was done by real computer engineers. If Bill Gates stole from Apple, Apple stole from xerox. Steve Jobs only feat was that he kept his company alive through persistence while companies like Commodore/Amiga (who at the time had better computers) gave up because they lacked the leadership of a persistent owner.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
He's a business genius. Look at how he turned Apple around. They might not be the largest, but they're the most profitable. He knows how to make a healthy company, not to mention a spectacular operating system. If you can't see this, I feel sorry for you.
why?

Paul rand NEVER made anything for apple... he designed a logo for NeXT, a company from Steve jobs after he was laid off from Apple.

My reaction about the word 'cyber-crime', well I don't practice that one and can't appreciate it. It has to be cybernetica or so to say the science of the reglisation-, stirings-, information- and communicationmechanisme or cybernetics or so to say the science of control in machines, communication, male-, female-, animals, idioom (word-use). Perhaps Paul Rand has also this opinion, kind regards.

Oh come on. Sure, he waits sometimes before he speak but he says "ohh" and "umm" and "ahh" just as much as any other guy.
ur mom loves IBM
@xtreamof marketing idiots? their objective is to get people to remember the logo and the name. so i guess when you can recall it with full detail despite hating it, thats a successful marketing son.
Disney
Why is he an idiot? What did he do to make you think that he is not? He got fired by the company that he created with others who were the real genius.
I like the NEXT logo but its now dated with todays design. I can't believe Jobs payed $100,000 flat rate fee to Rand for that logo. I think he payed for the Rand name rather than the logo.
and years later, guess who learned how to charge for name rather than product :p

Everyone loves IBM.
Steve is no longer here. Embrace Linux. It's the only viable option.I wish Woz would jump back in but he understands age and his time left. Apple will soon go the route of the Studebaker.
people like you. how does it feel to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong (maybe the most wrong person alive)? Apple is the most valuable company on the planet, nearing a market cap approaching $1 trillion, having just had their most successful quarter, with $20 billion in profit.
