    Thanks my friend. It's good to hear from someone who is a pro and has used the Cokin system for so long and rates it highly. I was thinking of getting the Cokin square system, but other pro photographer I follow always sat to use Lee filters but I don't have the money for those. So I will definitely look at the Cokin ones now.

    Thanks, Roy! I really enjoyed it as well as learned some tips from your video. The main thing is that the way you presented was just right and easy to understand. I like to see people doing a more honest video like you. I'm talking about the UA-cam world can be so repetitious and it all mostly sounds the same, but yours was done without all that stupid added garbage. Thanks again!

    Very helpful video indeed - thanks for putting in this amount of work!
    When it comes to white balance and some filters' tendency to mess with it:
    Depending on the filter(s) you are using you can just hold up a piece of blank piece of paper in front of the camera, take you WB from that and then shoot away. (I see TV camera crews do this a lot when they are in the field). In a pinch, anything white will do to get at least a rough WB: books, pieces of paper, T-Shirts, billboards...and if anything fails, there's still LR for us still photographers. Obviously this is out if there is too little light when all the filters are mounted.

    • @roycruzphoto
      @roycruzphoto  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching! Great suggestions for getting white balance in-camera. That will definitely help get you in the ballpark which will help save a bit of time in post.

    Thank You So Much!!
    Much like the comment below me, other photographers shun Cokin, and press for high end products.
    I am poor. Dementia on disability poor. I shoot with the SL1 for 6 years now,, and I bust tail to hang with the big guns. Individual circular filters, for all my different lenses of different mm threading, was STUPID expensive, and I couldn't afford high end sqares also.
    Today I said screw it, and put the full ring and holder (48-87mm) set, variable nd set, solid set, the full set of color and variable color set, the creative filter set (keyhole/heart/oval etc) then the chromo set set that has the sepia.
    Remembered your video, came back, and just hit the order button. The best 63.00 I have spent on myself in a long time!
    Thank You Sir 😁

    One question I have, are those square filters secure in that holder?? Looks like they could fall down easily.

    • @roycruzphoto
      @roycruzphoto  Рік тому +1

      They are fine for the most part, especially with the original Cokin holder, but of course they're still plastic and may change with age. There are also a lot of cheap copies, which don't perform as well and filters will tend to slip out more. I definitely recommend getting the originals.

    Worth remembering to remove any UV protector filters you may have on your lens, before attaching the holder. This will bring the filters closer to the front of the lens and reduce any vignetting.

    You can use a hacksaw blade to cut off the front filter holder then the frame works fine on a 24-70 lens at 26mm. You can of course use the single filter holder on a lens as wide as 20mm. But if you want to use 2 filters then my cut down one can be useful but only at 26mm..... I can't find any Haida filters that fit the P series mount. Only 100mm x 100mm filters.

    Roy, why didn't you put a "dead cat" windbreaker over your microphone?
    Wireless mics are now available that work with cell phones.
    BTW, I have boxes of Cokin filters, both "A" and "P" that I pick up used if they are in decent shape. Also, I picked up a lot of new ones when digital photography came along because many photographers thought they no longer needed filters. LOL!
    I use my Cokin filters for both digital and film photography.

      @roycruzphoto  4 роки тому

      Thanks Thomas! I didn't own a dead cat or wireless mic at the time, but now I do. Have definitely learned a lot about audio while making these videos.
      Cokin has been around for ages and are still at it, which is one thing I admire about their company. Some of their effects filters are a blast from the past, but a lot of them are still quite useful.
      Thanks for dropping by and best regards! :)

    As I mentioned in a previous comment I was going to look at some of the more interesting filters after watching your video. Now if you would be so kind to tell me where to send the bill... Only joking, the reverse grads especially have added a new dimension to my photography and the infrared one certainly gives some very interesting shots, so this comment it purely to say thank you. Also added the Nuance 5 stop to go with the 10 so for me I now have the full set: ND2,4 &.8, ND Grad 2, 4 &8, Reverse grad 2,4. &8, Nuance 5 & 10 Stop, Hard grads ND 4&8, polariser and infrared and a couple of coloured grads I've had since Moses was a lad. I might add here that I use both a cropped sensor (7DII) and full frame (5DII). I have always preferred the 7D with filters as I use the Sigma 18-35mm lens which is for cropped sensors, just don't like the Tamron 24-70 with filters on either camera, this has saved me a fortune as I can keep to the P size. Watched the video again but I'm not getting the blue/yellow filter..........yet!! Thank you again Roy for a very simple but informative (and blooming expensive) video.

    • @roycruzphoto
      @roycruzphoto  7 років тому +2

      +Mark Harris 😄 You're welcome! I'm glad you're enjoying your filters! They certainly do add a new dimension to photography. I'm also trying to avoid getting filters for my Canon full-frame wide angles as long as I can, as they're so expensive. Good thing I use them mostly for events and portraits. Cokin P is definitely the sweet spot for APS-C.

    Question. Ive used nothing but circular filters up to this point. Thinking of switching to the Cokin set. Will the P-Series fit on a Tamron 24-70mm lens with no issues??? The other lenses I have is a Tamron 75-200mm and a Tamron SP 15-30mm wide angle. I know they wont fit my wide angle and I'm not to worried about he 75-200mm. Just the 24-70 im concerned about the fit. Thank you

      Hi Bruce. It’s hard to tell if the filter will be big enough to avoid vignetting because lens designs differ. I tried the Cokin P on my Canon 24-70 (77mm filter thread) and it only worked with the wide filter holder (1 slot). There was vignetting with the 3-slot holder. Not sure which version your Tamron is, but if it’s the 82mm filter version, my guess would be that it wouldn’t work. At least not at the widest setting. Best way would be to try it out at a store, but my guess with Full frame glass, you’ll need to step up to the Cokin Z system.

    A very informative video. I have a bit of a dilemma. I would like to use two filters (an ND and ND Grad) with a wide angle lens. Though I note that you mention that the Cokin filter holder for wide angle lenses only has a slot for a single filter. Obviously, this design would reduce vignetting. Though I heard that Lee has a filter holder for wide angle lenses that has slots for two filters. Do you reckon that Cokin filters would fit in a Lee filter holder?

      For wide angle lenses, you might have to go a step larger and get the 100mm filters. I believe the Cokin 100mm (Z Series) should fit the Lee 100mm, and any other 100mm filter for that matter. The Cokin P filters mentioned in this video are 84mm in width, but I'm not sure if any other manufacturers make a similar size. 100mm filters are definitely a safer choice for wide / ultra wide angle lenses. Thanks for watching!

    You left off the fourth and very important component: Cokin's snap-on lens hoods.
    Vignetting is *not* always caused by the size of a lens, more important is the angle of coverage of a lens. Wide angle lenses are where we run into more problems.

    My objective is a Sigma 17 to 70mm. I afraid at 17mm the angel is too wide for a P Series Filter Holder. Should I use a Z Pro Serie Holder instead? Thanks!

    Is it a good practice to keep the polarizer and UV filter always on.

    • @roycruzphoto
      @roycruzphoto  7 років тому +1

      Many people like to keep UV filters on their lenses to protect the front element, but it can introduce flare and degrade image quality, depending on the filter. You should be fine as long as your UV filter is a high quality one. As for the polarizer, I would not keep that on the lens as it makes you lose a lot of light. I'd put that one on the lens only when needed. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Roy, I know this is an old video but just stumbled on it. I just got the P SERIES holder and tried it out with a 10 stop. I have major light leakage and even a reflection of my rokinon lens logo right in my image. Any fixes for that? ..... Tried throwin a fabric cover over the set up but that's a pain in the arse lol

      Thanks for watching! I used to have the same issue and did the fabric cover thing for a while as well. I've found a better solution: drive.google.com/open?id=1xNetS5DDKDyuSNyeHEj8i5mpavs96trG
      I bought the cheapest P-series circular filter I could find on eBay and took out the filter. I use the ring to close the gap between the holder and 10-stop filter. Hope this helps! Thanks again!

      It really depends on the situation, but my most used filter would probably be the Neutral Density for long exposures. Thanks for watching!
