  • Caller explains the god he believes in and why he believes: mainly through faith. Host talks about how faith isn’t a reliable path to truth and doesn’t lead to much discussion.
The Atheist Experience episode 20.47 for November 27, 2016, with Matt Dillahunty and Don Baker.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
    ► freethoughtblog...
UA-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of UA-cam comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The neural connections that this Carl has established in his brain, or better say other Christians had installed for him, by giving out specific religeous belief in his head, are stable and require a stable amount of energy. Any new information that conradicts those believes will require their brain to either reconsider or completely replace their stable neural connections. In any of those two cases the amount of necessary energy to do that job will exceed the amount they used to spend. Any living being is obliged to follow the physical laws, precisely the energy conservation law that is presented in biological forms as an instinct of self-preservation. The living beings are mortal because energy is limited and one day your body will eventually die incapable to reproduce its own cells. Everybody gets old. So, the thing I'm trying to say is that this Carl's brains know when he hears anything even remotely contradictory to his believes and block thinking to avoid energy loss. If he would make an effort to overcome that biological instinct he would be able to learn something new. This is why it's so hard for him to answer the questions and that's why it's so hard to study in general. Overcoming the instinctual programmes that were dominant for a lion's share of our evolutional life is always hard, but a clever person knows that and tries their best to learn and be open for any new information. That's for my opinion is the fundamental principle of learning. Religeon is meant to stop any study, any overcoming of animalistic nature that lies deeply in every human being, any effort to establish new neural connections that can potentially kill faith once and for all.

The phone analogy just confirms Carl is confusing Faith (reliance on UNsubtantiated knowledge) with Trust (reliance on PREsubstantiated knowledge). I like to use the restaurant bathroom scenario to explain the difference: imagine you go to a restaurant with your spouse. After lunch, you have to go to the bathroom, but for some reason that only exists in this exemple you can't bring your wallet with you there. Trust would be to leave your wallet in the hands of your spouse, reasonably expecting that you will get it back as is when you get out. Faith would be to leave your wallet in the hands of a complete stranger who happens to be standing next to the bathrom door. Of course you could get it back and without anything missing from it, but you wouldn't have the knowledge to raisonably expect or even to calculate the odds of that outcome.
