For the first day of our visit to Goliad, Texas, we got set-up at the state park, grabbed a bite at the Empresario Restaurant, toured the Markethouse Museum, visited the memorials to Ignazio Zaragoza, the Angel of Goliad, and the Goliad Massacre victims. Then we spent the night at an old (and haunted?) Spanish colonial-era fort, Presidio la Bahia.

Family oral history always had William Quinn, my 3rd great grand uncle, as having been killed at the Goliad Massacre. Through research, I found out that he was not killed in the Massacre but, during the Battle of Coleto Creek on the previous day. Somehow. I felt better about that!

185 years ago today, on March 27, 1836, approximately 450 Texian soldiers were murdered by Mexican firing squads after having surrendered days earlier. Remember the Goliad Massacre! And NEVER, EVER, EVER, SURRENDER.

No Texas history buff should skip Nac! It's the oldest city in the state. Do you have any favorite state parks in the area?

In the courtyard look up near the top of the chapel. You will see a statue of an angle. It was carved by Lincoln Borglum.. he and his father carved Mt. Rushmore.

Don't feel bad! The history curriculum gives Goliad about a paragraph, and the Alamo gets a lot more attention. Thanks for watching!
