Geelong missed out on being Victoria’s capital thanks to a quirk of nature, but this beautiful seaside town doesn’t lack for unusual history. Horses hiding out, never to be seen again prison escapees, false maps, and a load of old bollards are proof positive that a walk around Geelong is one not to be missed.
Home to the Greatest Team of All
Ahh, the bollards of my hometown. They're featured in so many photos from my adolescence, when I attended school a few minutes from the waterfront. It's awesome seeing Geelong get some love for a change.
Yay! Love to see my hometown featured! Even learned a couple of things I didn’t know!
I grew up close to the St.Albans gatehouse. It used to be abandoned before ownership and renovation into a home, us kids thought it was haunted. Nice summary but missed the botanic gardens and a mention of William Buckley.
Didn't we all get told a jockey hung himself in there and his ghost is still there?
A great way of displaying the beauties of my home city. I was just wandering along the Waterfront yesterday, thinking how beautiful the whole place is now, and this popped up in my UA-cam list. Thanks Tony Robinson.
That was great. Born in Geelong in 1947 and I am still here. I am glad Geelong is not the capital of Victoria. The hotel where Tony talked to the guy about ice is the Carrington Hotel. It was my watering hole many years ago. I used to work over the road and my workmates and I would frequent it.
Wow! Congrats on living such a long amazing life!
Brian, did you work at Brown-Murphy?
@@ChezzaAU Yes I did and also at Merko Nissan. Where is our connection
I lived in the house directly opp the Carrington🙂
@@ChezzaAU Was that the double story white house in Myers street?
Totally missed out on the Botanical gardens! Both in Geelong and Melbourne! Both are very amazing places.
My adopted home and my kids’ hometown. I was not expecting such a lovingly made tribute. Thank you 🙏
Geelong is fantastic - everyone should come and enjoy it
NO! The roads are choked. Sleepy Hollow preferred. Grockels should go somewhere else!
@@johnv341 Grockels.. you my friend were surely born in the West country of England
@@triarb5790 not born there but lived in Exeter for 2 years. Some ancestors were West country.
Grew up in Geelong. Haven't lived there in over thirty years. Really miss the place but it's always nice to visit when I can. Feel at home there
When you live there... And know how bad it is
Never noticed the rabbits, learn something new every day.
I moved here 6 six ago, from Melbourne. This is my home now. 💕
Shhhh it's a secret that Geelong is actually nice
Those old people at the jail are more likely to break their hips than break out
hello my friend, i was in 1988
geelong I've loved this city ever since.
Greetings Kale
Viele Grüße Deutschland . Ich habe noch Verwante in Geelong Wohnen .
Baldrick was my fav character in Blackadder
Time Team for me.
Don't ask him to make you a coffee!
He had cunning plans.
Indeed
He’s a mega lefty😡
Well this was unexpected like really unexpected
Interesting that St Albans Park homestead and Geelong Gaol are now both owned by the same person.
My God! Imagine walking down Swanston Street Geelong?
Done it many times.
@@cameronwhyte7223 i lived close by cant say i walked down it that much i was at the other end pretty cool old Geelong side.
MMMM Melbourne cup day is a Holiday, so no school, maybe a taller tale than portrayed!
Not a gazetted public holiday til 1877, and even if it was, who knows whether Geelong would treat a Melbourne public holiday as a Geelong public holiday
@@tfj100 yes indeed. I live in Geelong and I can confirm that many schools here take Geelong Cup as the holiday instead of Melbourne Cup, and on Melbourne Cup day shops down here are open for business. 😊
carro villa state very beautuful tony uncle
i lived across the road from back of that jail were Tony is. i feel pretty grateful living here we have alot of space. and they use to come over to ask if they seen a prisoner around our house lol. doubt they would come there they would try and get away as far as possible, scarey it was for us though.
Geelong is the best
love how he only got the best bits of gbasher, we need to release the excellence that is corio and whittington onto the world!
Now that would make an interesting video. The ads before would run longer than the actual info.
No place is all good or all bad.
1:05 I sat there at that very table and had lunch with my girlfriend 3 days ago.
16:17 i go past that bottle'o on my way to school every day

tony the prioson is very old in australia
And Timezone
История не очень древняя, но интересная.
Zero mention of Phar Lap being a New Zealand horse
He was bred in NZ, but was 100% Australian.
One of his descendants is now NZ's PM.
@@jonathonlivingstonelemming1024 How original
@@jonathonlivingstonelemming1024 Er...................................Is that you Caligula?
Next you will be saying Russell Crowe and Neil Finn are kiwis!
Tony. The term 'bungalows' (ex British India), in Australia, means ANY house of ONE story. Australian's think of Bungalows as thirties lean-toos out the back - often dark green with trellis. Now largely gone & replaced by 'recreational decks'. SO DON'T CALL AUSSIE SINGLE STORY HOUSES, BUNGALOWS. thanks Tony.
One day
Maybe i can visit geelong
Say hello from indonesia
Don't worry.lol
Nah we don’t want you here LOL
geelong is quite boring to be honest but there are some fun things to do
only good thing to come out of geelong was the barra i6
Whilst I enjoyed this video about Geelong it was a little misleading that you walked from the waterfront to St Albans and back to the waterfront people may think it’s a walk they could do I’m guessing they could if they were fit and had a full day to do it in
I will not wag school and win the Melbourne Cup. I will not wag school and win the Melbourne Cup. I will not wag school and win the Melbourne Cup.
I guess today it's fitting to say GO CATS!.
Geelong's most current vermin - 21:20 RHS of screen.
I didn’t see any Muslims 🤷🏼♀️
Nicky, give it a rest will ya.
Right where you were standing on yhe promenade is where i did a shit 3 days before you filmed there

geelong had waxen statue in victoria geelong waxed rabbit tony
You need to go back to school, concentrating on English 😂😂😂
You have really showed hor horrible Melbourne and surrounds are with this show, just a collection of the worst over-development Australia has to offer.
25.50 you mean abos
What? You're in the wrong century. Even 60 years ago no one would have used that term on TV.
@@tonyh9875 i read it still gets used..but not the last few years, as it his classed as offensive.
I dont see how it is if it is a abbreviated word of aboriginals for short
@@ghs7714 - No one uses that term, unless they're outright bigoted. We still have a few people in Australia who fit that description.
It's offensive, because it is ALWAYS used as a derogatory term. It's not a nice friendly nickname, any more than the 'N word' is just a nice friendly way of saying Negro. "Indigenous" or "Aboriginal" are both generally accepted.
Geelong has a substantial local Aboriginal community, descendants of the local Wathaurong people.
I'm just amazed that you watched a 27-minute, interesting doco about Geelong, my home town, and that was all you could find to comment on.
@@tonyh9875 well said, i am suprised tha national wool musuem was not included in the Doco.
Well i just needed to clarify that, as i have found a lot of Geelong locals using the Term i referenced earlier.
Yes spot on, abos.
