The 2024 Genesis Electrified GV70 Might Just Be The Best Genesis Ever

  • With nearly 500 horsepower and the second fastest 0-60 time in the Genesis lineup, there's not much wrong with the GV70 EV, as long as you're OK with just over 200 miles of driving range. For most folks not only will that be just fine, never visiting the gas station again is a "luxury feature" worth contemplating.
The biggest deal with the "Electrified GV70" (which is a silly name by the way) is that unlike a EQE or RZ 450e, the GV70 looks almost identical to the gasoline model. If you're not interested in an EV that looks like a spaceship, check out the GV70.

I should have gotten the GV70 electric but I’m still happy with my GV60. The extra room on the 70 would be appreciated for day trips with a double stroller in the boot. It’s my daily work car so it does the job I bought it for wonderfully!

You’d be surprised that the rear world difference between interior space between the GV60 and GV70 electric is actually not THAT significant.

    • @volcalstone

The GV60 is more of a hatchback than it is an SUV. While the EGV70 is a proper SUV. Both are compact size but the cost difference is that much so I rather get the latter any day. The opening sunroof is a big factor for me. The interior of the GV60 is nice tho but so is the EGV70 especially with the better steering wheel. Also I know looks are subjective but the back of the EGV70 is much nicer.

Genesis and EV are a match made in heaven. Arguably, the powertrain has been the weakest part of Genesis vehicles. Since Hyundai-Kia’s EV technologies are quite competitive in the current market, EV Genesis makes the brand really compelling option versus other luxury EVs imo. The only thing missing right now is the higher end models with dedicated EV platform for better overall packaging and range.

The Gv70 is my favorite electric vehicle right now for most of the points you made. It looks normal! Buttons and switches are where you expect them to be. For me the climate control is fine as a mix of buttons and screen. The tunnel hump is fine also it keeps the car feeling normal. I can't stress that enough lol. Really considering this vehicle for my wife since we own another Genesis, but there are a couple factors steering us away. The GV60 feels more spacious on the inside because of the lack of center tunnel, as mentioned in the review; it really hurts the airiness of the cabin. Second is that fully specced 3.5L V6 used versions currently can be had for ~$45k, which not only is a huge price delta but also bodes badly for the EV depreciation and pricing wars.

This may just be the way to go. Thank you for the review, Alex. What confuses the frick out of me when it comes to ev city/highway ratings is MPGe numbers. So they tell us this is 91 MPGe combined. But how do I deduce the approximate range from that number? How many MPGe does this models battery hold? If the range is 236 miles and the combined range number is 91, I get 2,593 "gallons" of electricity capacity. Am I doing the math correctly on this? Is that calculation the same for all evs? Just can't seem to wrap my head around these numbers.

Love your content and insight, thank you for diving deep. Two things I think car reviewers are weird about: rear seat leg/head room importance. In the real world people rarely, if ever, drive with adults in the back seat so why put so much emphasis on it? Also the idea of road tripping in an EV. It’s such a rare occurrence that the constant reference to range vs a road trip is meaningless. I own an EV and have many friends who own EV’s and none of them care about, nor plan to ever, go on a road trip in our EV. Anyway, love this car and probably going to buy one when my Polestar lease is up next year.

Battery is like a backpack full of food. Running with a bigger backpack means you will consume more. I am not fan of Tesla design, but in terms of efficiency (number of miles from 1kWh covered), they are winning. If consumers get over the initial design impression, they may sober up and see that all these converted platform EVs are several hundred pounds heavier than comparable Tesla / dedicated EV platform.
Mach E’s bigger battery exist to compensate for efficiency deficiencies. And that is the case of Hummer EV. I would be surprised if EV Escalade is any different.

@@Trades46 The point is not to be a Tesla fanboy, rather point out: legacy manufacturers could do better. They too try to make their EVs look out of this world instead of focusing on efficiency and bringing down cost.
Tesla NVH improved upon installing double-pane glass, and they too reworked the Model Y suspension. I am still very much not fan of barren design that leads to driver distraction (which can't be compensated by some beta version of Autopilot that can fail you when you need it the most).

I keep watching GV70 videos to figure out why everyone is recommending the GV70 over the GV60, and I still don't get that from this video. Some people don't like the styling of the GV60, which is fair, but the interior of the GV60 is bigger even though the car is smaller, and the GV70 is missing the coolest features of the GV60, especially the drawer compartment, which I think should replace the glove box on every vehicle moving forward.

@@richardb9591 I have seen and driven the EGV70, but the GV60 is the only reason I shopped Genesis at all. Like I said, the only defense of the GV70 that makes sense to me is the conservative styling, which is personal preferene. But facial recognition and the drawer-style glove box are two game changing car features that should be on all Genesis models. No idea why they're just on the GV60, and for me, the eGV70 was priced $10k over the GV60 even before the markups. Not sure if that's changed.

Hyundai and Kia models should get 300+ miles for RWD models.
But I don't know if it's going to be 10 % incr range for the AWD Genesis. It will be the same weight, so I expected a proportionately higher range but apparently the ev6 AWD has LESS than 10%better range next year.
