  • With more and more insurgent groups from the Northeast joining peace talks with the Government of India, the region has been witnessing a drastic decline in insurgency in the last five years. Home Ministry data from 2019 shows that insurgency in the Northeast region is continuously declining since 2014. According to the data, the Northeast region witnessed the highest number of insurgency activities in 2014 but they started to register a declining trend thereafter. The insurgent groups carried out 824 attacks and killed 212 civilians in 2014. In response, the security forces gunned down 181. In 2015, the insurgents launched 574 attacks in which 149 extremists, 46 civilians and 46 security personnel were killed. The insurgent activities continued to diminish in 2016 in which 87 extremists were killed during 484 insurgent attacks. The figure of civilian and security casualty stood at 48 and 17 respectively. The insurgent attacks reduced to 308 in 2017 in which 57 insurgents, 37 civilians and 12 security personnel were killed. In 2018, the extremism violent incidents came down to 252 in which 34 insurgents, 23 civilians and 34 security personnel were killed. In this edition of The Big Picture we will analyse the insurgency situation in the Northeast.

If we quicken the process of economic integration of north east with main land, people will settle down to a large extent. Insurgents uses this economic disparity theory to proliferate their ideals. Geographical connectivity, an all weather infrastructure development like roads and railways and creation of opportunities to involve with rest of India culturally & economically for at least the coming generation of NE people is much of a need for them. Also mainland India need to boost the shared cultural background that we have with north east. Also we need to take care of our attitude with north east people.

You are very much right in your approach. Cultural and economical alienation from mainland also develops seceding nature in them. And not to forget the humiliation they face in any of Indian state like being called chinese. I know that these incidents are less but that also affect them much because they are already neglected

We need to improve our relations with China too for insurgency to come down. Many militants are taking shelter in Chinese border.

ACC to goi the insurgent are declined. But arunachal Pradesh wants to join in autonomous council and include in 6th schedule area.
And nagaland wants to make greater nagaland by adjoining areas of Assam, arunachal Pradesh , nagaland and Myanmar. And separate constitution. So what govt will do to deal with these insurgent groups. Like nscn- in .

I blamed for GOI specially congrass😆party & Policy Maker who had ignore the Northeast State for more than six decade thts the reason behind in Insurgency increasing year by year including Attacks. So I belived tht in future GOI will not do same Mistake again as now BJP party has been focusing on NE State, as we can see the result i.e decreasing in Insurgency Attack and involving in peace talk.

Had Congress under Nehru not been inheriting British colonial mindset we would have been good neighbors. But Nehru had colonized Nagalim and gave some to Myanmar leading to bloody war...
