You have just built your new PC and the first time you power on and nothing happens!
Or there are some weird issues with USB ports not working or drives not being detected.
This is actually quite common and an easy mistake during the build process can potentially have you going around in circles trying to diagnose the fault.
Make sure your motherboard is correctly installed and all the motherboard pillars or mounting points are in the right places.
In this video we will go over the basics of motherboard installation and the correct positions for the motherboard stand offs or pillars and why they can cause so many problems and even a short circuit!
Knowledge is power and hopefully this video will give you the information and confidence to install your motherboard properly first time, every time.

This will help alot for beginners. to overcome the fear of building a Pc together 😀
i hope so
Yes, beginners like me. LOL
@@OlettaLiano Lol!
I'm reminded of the time (nearly 20 years ago now) I worked at Preston Manor High School, Wembley, as an ICT Technician, and spent a summer building 100 or so Pentium IV PC's for the three workstation rooms we had there. Then it came to the PC that the teacher would use, which was an RM machine and oddly housed in a cut out in the wall. We used the same case and put the same upgraded hardware in but the darn thing would not turn on, whatever we did - nada - nothing - dead. Even had the regular Sparky, Jerry who bless his heart spent ages testing the case for shorts and if it was Earthing correctly (which it was) and trying to work out what was going on. We took the kit out, put it in the cases we had been building in and it was fine. Put it back in the RM case - nothing. Still never got to the bottom of it - but it must have been a ground issue somewhere. Strange. I don't have sleepless nights over it, but it bothers me though, hey ho life goes on! 🙂
yeah funny how sometimes there is a possessed PC that just won't be fixed. Had a couple over the years.
They’re actually called “standoffs” Mike!
some people don't know what that is
You commented, and so did I. 😊 Learn, in case you should start a youtube channel. 🎉😂😊
Thanks mike! This video is going to be very useful to send to those users completely stuck with a £1000 paperweight! :D
Hope so! that is the idea
Well explained guidance for non-technical people like myself who probably wouldn’t know this would be the cause of their pc not working.Thank you for your video Mike and Kath 👏👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Much appreciated! sometimes the simple things are easy to overlock (especially when the motherboard is sat on top of it!)
So crazy. I just installed mounting pillars on my new case and now this comes out! This is a must watch!
enjoy!
@@mikesunboxing Lucky for me my case came with no mounting pillars installed. I had to install them manually myself. So it looks like im all good!
Thanks mike and Lady Kath. Great info as usual. I've bought cases since time began and some of them had plastic standoffs in the parts bag., which came in very handy when there was not a place to mount a standoff. So I would use one of those on whatever corner(s) needed one. Supported the MB by pushing one end into the board...problem solved. I think I still have a few in my parts bin. Thanks for sharing guys. Take care. Cheers
That is awesome! cheers Rick
6.3 is size Mike, 9 bux Australia for 1000 so I'm guessing 4 pounds?
Mike playing with his stand-off knobs inside a box 📦
Thanks for the refresher, as you said numerous situs caused by not getting the basics right. Only need to read discord entries for proof. Thsnjs Mike and Kath 🐈👍
this will be pinned in the tech support channels for quick reference
On my first build i had this problem. A misplace motherboard stand can easily short the board and can cause a lot of issues. This is also easy to miss if you don't properly inspect the layout of the stand to match your board.
yes it is a very common issue.
Great advice.
hopefully it helps some novice builders
Hello, greetings from the Philippines.
So this means that there are some standoff parts that should not be screwed in order to prevent short circuit? I have my MSI MPG X570S Carbon Max WiFi that I currently using and it is an ATX form.
yes that is right the MATX layout will short out ATX
I had a very strange boot up problem just recently. I had made a system with 13500 and a motherboard Asrock Z790 PRO RS ram kingston BEAST supposedly able to run at 6000mhz or hz. I assembled computer hit the power on and the fans were spinning alright the rgb colors were on but no screen. Just black. I checked everything etc. I could show image with only 1 memory bank but nothing if set properly for dual channel. The initiall fear was that i could had bended the motherboard pins during installation. Truth is that the CPU during installation kinda fell from a bit higher than i hoped. I also asked others etc and all were saying that the problem was probably this cause not being able to see the dual channel and malfunctioning on that was a sign of bended pins. I was to set sail to buy new motherboard since, as the fault was probably on my end there was no point trying to send it back for replacement. At the end i decided to make a last efford i reset the bios but this time i set the dram memory to the lowest setting 4800(or could be 4400) 1,1 volt so it was the XMP3 choice. And it worked! I could "see" the memory sticks at dual channel! So i had not bended the pins! So maybe make a video about this too. In general i see that many asrock mobo buyers suffer from this issue. Memory sticks supposedly working at much higher speeds seem to giving black screens with Asrock mobos (even with the Taichi) . So i think it would be a good idea to cover this too in a video. "If black screen than reset bios and set memory to lower setting"
good idea
You forgot to mention that some CASES have a PIN in the Middle instead of a mounting pillar now to hold the MB in place while fitting ...
thought i did say that, oops sorry. was definitely thinking of it
I am very confused my pc turns on with it rgb and fans but it still says no display on my monitor
This is maybe easier to fix or at least advise if we can ask more questions and get direct answers, so feel free to join our Discord chat and we can go over it in more detail discord.gg/XtBTGQ6BDu

Had this same issue got cpu debug light then later a ram stick "died"
sorry to hear that, was it shorted?
@mikesunboxing I think it was shorted on the case because I didn't have the standoffs all in right. Worked fine after I fixed up that but then a couple days later a ddr5 module failed. I had 4 sticks of 16gb installed now when I try to install one specific stick the pc won't boot.
There's also the horror of getting a screw trapped in a standoff, could be a whole other video.
yeah that is a right royal pain in the butt
God my issue seems like 1 in a billion. I still need help diagnosing my issue.
