Player 2 most likely worked fine. You only selected 1 player in Mario. Didn't notice that you were not Luigi? The cord that goes into P1 port is the white striped cord.
Freaking SWEET! My controller was suffering from the same problem but what I did was just take the top of the switch off (no soldering) and lightly sand the contacts inside the switch with some 600 grit sandpaper. You have to be SUPER (no pun intended) careful not to lose the slider contacts and springs but you can just carefully bend the switch back together while it's still on the board. Thanks a TON! Now my wife and I can play Mrs. PacMan legit with two Advantage controllers!
I really love the channel, great to see some life brought back into these old video game consoles and accessories. Nice to have you back, too, I was wondering where you'd gone!
Welcome back man. I've been watching other repair videos here on UA-cam but it just wasn't the same. Even though repairing is repairing no matter who does it but for some reason I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
You are back ! Thanks once again for help ! Cant wait for the new videos. I wasnt aware of the different controllers for NES, and frankly the original ones are not my favourite ones.
I wanna see you make a monster, combine different pieces of dead consoles together in a Dr.Frankenstein montage...lol, Halloween is right around the corner.
Besides the white stripe that you now know about, those button pieces that contact the circuit board complete the circuit can also be cleaned by rubbing them on the side of your bluejeans or any cloth. I have rarely needed to clean my old controller contacts with alcohol and q-tips. Maybe once or twice total in all these years.
Welcome back have missed ur videos I have also started repairing stuff from eBay and have gotten ok with it I have started making a little side money selling everything local make my money back plus a little so thanks a lot
Fumes are NOT lead and not more or less harmful when using solder with lead in them. The fumes come from the flux. Still not great for you! The lead is not vaporizing that would require temperatures in excess of 1749 °C (3180 °F). Neat video!
Great video! I coincidentally ordered a couple broken advantages off of eBay myself, and looking to repair them on my Twitch stream and UA-cam channel! I will make sure to link to your video if I ever get around to putting that video out! Subbed! :)
When you're probing for continuity, use the tips of your probes. They're pointy for a reason, 30 yr old flux residue makes for a good insulator and can give you false open circuit readings.
Very nice! I got the NES Advantage when it first came out! It was tough laying down that much money when I could have got a game for the around the same price, but I loved it for all games! The joystick was better than the D pad and with adjustable rapid fire, shooting games were cake! Until my friend borrowed it and accidentally sat on it and snapped the circuit board under the controller. I swear that mine was a single board combining the buttons and everything. Maybe they changed the design or my memory is failing me!
It's possible they made a few revisions, that's not at all uncommon. All the ones I've opened were this kind, but i haven't seen too many. Might have been a very early board that was different
I laughed when you added tape to the wire so you'd know which was P1 when that wire is already identified with a white line. Also, you don't have a fan when soldering?
Last night I fixed a 'tested' NES Advantage I bought off of eBay. The joystick and A buttons were not working By the end of the night I ended up touching up all of the solder joints to fix it. No corrosion and seemed relatively unused. Was a brown gooey flux nightmare though
@@RetroRepairs Nope! go back and watch your initial testing of the controller....you never selected a 2 player game until after you worked on the switch. When you die during the testing you are still Mario you should have been Luigi to switch to player 1 (because of mixed up cable).
the fumes that come from soldering are NOT vaporized lead, I promise. The flux isn't good for you to breathe, sure, and that's not because you're using leaded solder, it's because you're using flux, which you should always use.
Try coloring in the pads with a #2 pencil. It helps add a new layer of connectivity to the buttons and makes them last longer before kneading to be cleaned again.
Have you already tried cleaning the pins? Usually purple screen is a result of not getting a proper connection, otherwise you'd have to open it up to troubleshoot
You showed three of them in the start. Why didn't you take all of them apart and use the pieces to build two good ones and then build one from the broken leftover parts? That's what I wanted to see, and I'm sure everyone else did too.
I was kid when fixing Nintendo™ computers! THIS MAN HERE IS AMATOR, and dont know well what he is doing, 43:48 that plastic is for protect wire's for not let them geting out. he just put plactic there, LOL, funny See in how was in start before he open 5:46
I wanted to watch this video, but, God, what an annoying high pitched sound coming from something in there, Jesus. It's like a capacitor dying or something.
this is just a suggestion, but your videos are all extremely long and would benefit from a lot of editing, and your camera work could use some improvement especially when you use 1 hand for everything in some parts.
Really flux on solderwixk??? How old is your wick? And FLUX does not clean off solder! It cleans metal metal so solder will stick? Why did you not try contact cleaner on the switch before you desildered it??? I have never seen such a flux happy bunch of you tubers. What did you take staiinedglass, jewelry making or gutter joining before you started working with electronics. You say later flux cleans, but have you waited a 1000 years before you resolder he switch? Really you are very inconsistent and do not seem to know what you are doing!
Player 2 most likely worked fine. You only selected 1 player in Mario. Didn't notice that you were not Luigi?

Always great to watch your repairs and restoration vids. Very clever. Good work mate and good to see you back
*points at the huge white stripe on the player one wire* Sure you need that tape?

Wires go under the cross to hold tension
An old wise man once told me "Just hold your breath while soldering" lol
Joe Churchill: An old man told me to get in his van for candy. There wasn't any candy, but there was pizza! Yay!
You're lucky, when I got in the van, he didn't even have pizza
Joe Churchill: was there at least pepperoni?
Gustave Frankfurter Seemed more like salami stick but it was so dark i couldnt see
That's what I do

I would recommend fiber glass pens instead of sandpaper, easier to work with. Welcome back!
FYI on the NES Advantage Cable, Player 1 side has the White Stripe, Player 2 Side is Solid
The more you know. I never had one originally, but someone pointed that out after the fact of course

When I see the NES Advantage, the first thing that comes to mind is Ghostbusters 2!
Maybe I'll do that mod for my next video!
Welcome back have missed ur videos I have also started repairing stuff from eBay and have gotten ok with it I have started making a little side money selling everything local make my money back plus a little so thanks a lot
Yay!! This video is awesome!! I was waiting for this video to come
I liked the Advantage controller but my favorite was the Max. I loved that thing!

we had one of these as a kid, seemed legit af, when it took up your whole lap

BEdmonson85 I was thinking "maybe try cleaning the contacts, see if that helps any"
Glad to see you back!
Great to see you back, but you got some fierce electromagnetic squeal going on there.
You deserve more views and subscribers my guy!!!
The NES Max was an absolute REQUIREMENT for Track and Field 2

You could probably use a bent paper clip to check the plugs.
Happy to see another video from you! :)
Welcome Back, i realy missed this video's :)
I think i still have one of those controllers laying around here, also a PSX version of it.
Dude!! Welcome back!!!!
Nice dude you're back!
Good to see you upload man :)
Daddy repairs has blessed us this day
I have an Advantage with a start button not working. I've cleaned it an don't see any bad solder connections. What could it be?
I laughed when you added tape to the wire so you'd know which was P1 when that wire is already identified with a white line.
Also, you don't have a fan when soldering?
Shhhhhhhh
Last night I fixed a 'tested' NES Advantage I bought off of eBay. The joystick and A buttons were not working By the end of the night I ended up touching up all of the solder joints to fix it. No corrosion and seemed relatively unused. Was a brown gooey flux nightmare though
White side of the chord is player 1
I remember those NES "advantage" controllers. They were notorious for not working, new, out of the box.
I saved so much birthday and xmas money to get one. It was the most useless controller ever.
How do you find all these junk consoles and stuff
You should've tried some deoxit on the switch instead desoldering. I've fixed contact issues on stereos from the 80s with great success!
He should have used his flux pen to begin with rather than converting every solder point into a cold joint.
Was wondering if i could get some brand and models of the gear you use.
only player one can pause on org Mario bros
My brother can attest to this every-time he went to jump a big gap!
Bronze wire brush and 99% alcohol works good and you don't file down the contacts.
Shouldn’t you be on Luigi to test player 2?
Only if you hook up the cables correctly, i plugged them in backwards initially so p2 was sending the signal for p1
@@RetroRepairs Nope! go back and watch your initial testing of the controller....you never selected a 2 player game until after you worked on the switch. When you die during the testing you are still Mario you should have been Luigi to switch to player 1 (because of mixed up cable).
looks like a 4- way sanwa joystick could be retro-fitted into one of these with not too much effort.
That high pitched ringing from the TV hurts
welcome back from the west coast

Wow, how'd I miss this?
Welcome back!
This video helped a ton!! Thanks
Awesome fix as always
it look like you had the game on one player that's why player 2 didnt work but I could be wrong
Try coloring in the pads with a #2 pencil. It helps add a new layer of connectivity to the buttons and makes them last longer before kneading to be cleaned again.
How to fix my 72 in 1 Supervision game it only starts up a purple screen? Do places offer this kind of repair service?
Have you already tried cleaning the pins? Usually purple screen is a result of not getting a proper connection, otherwise you'd have to open it up to troubleshoot
Yes sure did with a microfiber cloth and alcohol. I opened it and cleaned it with alcohol. NO luck though.
I will clean it again and try it again. Thank you very much for your responses it is appreciated. I owe you
"I'm gonna go ahead and die"
Omg a new video🤗 MORE MORE MORE!!!!
Working on it ;)

Very informative video.
Long time no see bruh!

I've still got two. The first didn't need much, and i likely will have to create a frankencontroller out of the other two
Mine doesnt do anything
Yay I missed you
10mm socket love
Louis Rossmann would like to speak to you about your sparingly flux usage.
Anyone else hear that high pitch noise? It’s killing me.
Conductive not capacitive mate. :D nice video tho
I was kid when fixing Nintendo™ computers!

he just put plactic there, LOL, funny
See in how was in start before he open 5:46
Oups. Thanks for pointing that out. OP should make a note of that in the description..
You never need to rub the pads on paper. Alcohol only.
I wanted to watch this video, but, God, what an annoying high pitched sound coming from something in there, Jesus.
It's like a capacitor dying or something.
Subliminar message detected, the wire holder is a "cross"
Holy Nintendo Batman!

Wtf, finally i was thinking i was gonna be the first... and then 4 first was already there =(
