So cool to see how everyone helps each other. Even if you weren't loopers I have a feeling all loopers would help a fellow boater. We have helped so many boaters and kayakers and it just makes boating so much more enjoyable. I dont know of anyone that wouldn't like a hand docking a larger boat no matter their expertise. To be treated kindly at a stop is such a relief. Also, I laughed at "Post Mortem" and "Today I really think I need a drink" Cheers!
Thanks for the shout out in the video guys. It was great meeting you and Ollie. Your content is so great and unlike any "looper" channels out there and I've seen them all. Keep pushing out great content and any time you are in Georgetown or Murrells Inlet, let me know if I can help in any way. Good luck! Troy
It took me awhile to realize rubbing a pole while backing into a slip is OK. In fact if you have a lot of current or wind using a pole to Pivot on can be very useful.
It’s nerve wracking the first few times, ideally we have fenders there but if not, that’s what our rub rail is for! I can definitely see the value of pivoting 😂
Another docking under your belts! Lots of courage to take on this great adventure without lots of boating experience!! You've done marvelously well!!! Cheers
Oh I can see how docking would be stressful but you two did a great job! Watching your videos is so relaxing to me. Thank you for showing beautiful places and always being so positive and happy! Travel safe.
The Waccamaw River is always a highlight for me, as is Georgetown. Great job docking stern in. I have been “backing” in our large single screw (no bow thruster) sailboat for years and it is always exciting. Perhaps a bit easier for me because I have the visibility that you don’t. Good news is that for every one you do in different layouts and conditions, the more experience you get….which increases your abilities to anticipate the “ways” it might not go as planned and prep for them. May not ever decrease the anxiety, but will increase your overall ability to make it work, and even look good to the audience you may have on the docks. You looked good. Cheers!
Totally agree with respect to your thoughts on docking in different layouts and conditions. Each time we learn something, gain a little experience and it has been better and better! We give you lots of kudos for backing in in your single screw sailboat!
You guys do very well docking a single prop boat. I hope your stress level goes down in the future, you are very careful and observant when you do it. You do much better than a lot of people with more experience. Another great video, always look forward to your great adventures. Hugs for Ollie, Aloha!
You did well.. remember that every boat pilot has been through the same thing. They made mistakes and that's part of learning. Relax and have a tall one. Enjoy
Hi Guys, best laid plans and all, we all know how that goes ... But you kids always manage to make Lemonade 🍋‼️ By the way, Eliot Parked Pivot like a Boss ... Have Fun and Be Safe Out There ‼️🙂
Hi guys. I'm still a week behind reading your post that I know are at least a week behind your actual location, BUT I had to jump ahead when I saw your Post Heading. I thought you had realized that all boating plans should be written with a pencil as you learned last year when Elliot broke his wrist. (OUCH!) Ha Ha! I'm retired so I take one day at a time. I know you don't have that luxury, but try to relax. Stuff happens. When I was in the Marines, they drilled into our heads to adapt. Long range goals are necessary to accomplish a mission, but day to day goals have to be flexible. See ya' later. Semper Fi!
We would prefer to have it hoisted because it is in the way, but in this case we tied off both stern and bow of lines on the dinghy to port and starboard aft cleats - this way it was practically just a 4 ft extension off the swim platform 🤙
road deesel in sandyeggo was like 6.10 a gal the other day... sigh... unleaded has been tween 5.80 and 6.30 ..... e85 hasn't spiked increase, yet, hope id can't cuz of some deal of fuel to the gov vehicle fleet by the e85 plants that limit prices, but corn cost more soo sigh
@@SchoandJo unfortunately I'm land locked in the middle of Wyoming. I do miss boating and sailing. I sold Sea Ray yachts for about 6 years in central California. Central California has roughly 1000 miles of waterways from the Golden Gate bridge inland into the delta.
When Elliott was going through narrow pilings, he was explaining about how the following swells affected the handling. I did 20 years in the Navy, on smaller ships. We sometimes had to transit through narrow points like that. The Captain would approach the narrow point at minimum steerage way. Then, as the bow came into the narrow point, increase shaft RPM significantly, to put more prop wash across the rudders. That gives you better, more accurate steering until you get through the tight spot. You are the Captain of your boat. I'm just sharing experience. Fair winds and following seas. 🛥️
When you talked to a fuel dock where you'd like to fuel tell them your overall length to confirm that they can get you in. If short on space see if you can get in with just a stern and mid-ship tie. In theory you don't need the whole boat against the dock. $4.35 is definitely a deal right now.
As always, awesome video. I would freak out trying to dock a boat. I've never done it because I don't have a boat. I'd probably tear down the dock and sink my boat. ha. I better hang with my RV since I know how to do that. I love your channel, and can't wait to watch the next one. Stay safe.
We are just trying to figure out which direction you are traveling. You mentioned you had been at the rendezvous in Norfolk Virginia. That was the weekend of May 5 and six. Are you traveling north to south or south to north?
You can see our map at the initial part of the video, that is tracking where we started and where we’ve gotten too - in this video we’ve been Northbound from Key West to Georgetown. You probably are on our Sunday Summary (thanks!) where we reflect on the past week and look forward. It takes many hours to create these videos and as such they are a few weeks delayed. We always have the film dates in the description if you’re curious 😁
The stress of docking sounds similar to fighter pilots landing on a aircraft carrier. Studies show that carrier landings are more stressful than dog fights. Believe it or not.
Do you have any way to know where fuel is available? Truckers have truck stop guides. Is there anything like that for boaters? Or do you just "wing it"?
In our mapping software, Navionics, you can pan around your destination to see fuel available. We also use Waterway Guide - it has current prices and discounts by mile marker 😁
I can not believe how many boaters that are doing the loop or have UA-cam channels now days blow through the Waccamaw River between Georgetown and Myrtle Beach and don’t slow down to enjoy the scenery and the wildlife in the area. Boaters that have done the entire ICW will usually say that the Waccamaw River and it’s surrounding deep water creeks are probably the most scenic part of the ICW. However it seems like nobody wants to slow down and enjoy the area and what it has to offer. There are an unlimited number of places to anchor out, enjoy the scenery and watch the wildlife which could be anything from otters, wild hogs, turtles, gators and nesting osprey and bald eagles. If you are real lucky you may even see an elephant from a local zoo bathing in the river. My recommendation is to slow down and enjoy what the rural parts of the ICW has to offer. I am not talking about you guys in particular but If all a boater wants to do is to get from one big town to the next. I would recommend doing the trip by car and safe yourself about $50,000.
How low do you permit your diesel tank to go before you refill? I thought it was preferable to not go below 1/4 full bc of potential fowling issues and fuel access. Any lessons learned? Thanks!
Basically, you can go until you see some issues. As your tanks are lower just add a fuel filter check to your morning checks. If you are starting to get a little air in there it’s time to fill up. For us, full is 15in and we start seriously looking for fuel at 5in so that would be a 1/3!
Ollie didn't (intentionally) use bathroom on the boat for the first 18 months... but the trick was just being more stubborn than her. We simply didn't go to land for a week and she got the picture (and lots of treats haha) 😁
This is a bad time to be doing Americas Great Loop. Inflation driving fuel and marina prices way up. I see $7.50 gal for diesel in some places. Good luck.
There's always reasons why now isn't a good time but there really is no time like the present - who knows what will happen in the future. We are definitely not happy about the higher prices but we are taking them in stride! I've heard Canada is that expensive but so far we've been good at finding 4.XX for diesel.
Always enjoy your vids. But I should get back to work! Let the wind do the work for you when docking. You only influence your boat in the wind. Make friends with the wind. "Control" is a fallacy. :-O
Next time that happens I would just tie up to the fuel dock anyway and then be their first customer in the morning for fuel when they open. They’re hardly going to kick you off especially if you’re buying that much $$$ fuel from them in the morning… Maybe think of it as free overnight dockage…
Hehe we would have done that but there wasn’t a ton of room, being a new place for us we would have preferred someone telling us specifically which side of the fuel dock larger boats go too… oh well!
add GO TO POTTIE BEFORE DOCK!!! don't wanna be in holding pattern holding a rope to be tied within 10 or 20 mins and YOU HAVE TO DO THE PEE PEE DANCE!!! :) I mean if the least bit urge kinda thang?? just add it to a list, I feel that you are a LIST AND PROCEEDURE kinda peeps lol well at least an outline? hahahahah jokeing, prolly a 3 ring binder with proceedures!
ahhh it's too bad, they should sell tickesets with a signed release that you won't spoil the show for anyone but you get to SEE THE REHERSAL and just watch it for a day, on a day .... someday... kinda thing... or they do last months show one weekend in the middle of the DARK MONTH of learn the new show... ?>??? eh ideas?? or blah blah blah lol
Its ok if you guys take a break from the loop. Your basically outdoors all day. Losing water, sunburns, scurvy. Just kidding about scurvy. Theres probably nice hotels or bnbs.

LOL! Don't dock hangry! That is really good advice. Really enjoying your vids

The loop map in your intro is a great addition. Nice to be able to track your progress.
Thanks Brad!
great job docking! and can you believe Indigo Bakery is closed on wednesdays!
I cant believe it!!! Oh well, can't win them all 😁
Awesome vedio great area this is my home state

@@SchoandJo and fenders. Don't forget about the fenders.😁
@@timgreen4137 ideally fenders haha 😁
Don’t be so hard on yourself y’all are doing great. Just remember in boat life don’t make plans you can’t change.
Absolutely! Plans are written in the sand at low tide 🤙

💯💯 absolutely! We love every stop there

Hey Tom!! Appreciate the comment - gotta keep our eyes on the mission (in our case the loop) and stay flexible in the short term! Cheers!
Get diesel before you come to Canada on your loop. $2.65/Litre at the dock here. That works out to $7.75 USD / US gallon
Sheesh! Absolutely will - and will probably be running Pivot as a fuel efficiently as possible 😁
Torpedoes (trees) are a normal to us in the Northeast. We boat on the Delaware River (above Philadelphia). Trees are just a thing that happens.
Good to know! I didn't know that, we'll have to continue keeping an eye out 😁
how do you stern in while towing the dinghy? Seems like it would be in the way.
We would prefer to have it hoisted because it is in the way, but in this case we tied off both stern and bow of lines on the dinghy to port and starboard aft cleats - this way it was practically just a 4 ft extension off the swim platform 🤙

I am a old commercial fishing you need to practice docking in the wind.when I came. In wind rain storms I docked practice it you can do it
Nice! I bet it takes a lot of guts and patience to get good at docking in storms! I'd be willing to try but not in my boat 😁
