  • Late Night With the Devil is the 2024 horror movie starring David Dastmalchian as Jack Delroy, the popular host of NIGHT OWLS - a late night variety show with declining ratings. In order to win over audiences, he hosts a salacious Halloween special featuring special guests - including a talk with the devil. This found footage - mockumentary style horror movie is everything I look for in a found footage horror. I love the vibe, aesthetic, performances and the insane ending.

I just watched this the other day and also loved it. As I am (sadly) old enough to remember watching 1970s late night talk shows, I may have picked up on some tidbits that younger viewers may not have. For example, the skeptic character was clearly based on James Randi, who was a frequent guest on these types of shows back in that era. Little details like that really added some nostalgic authenticity to the film.

Same! I was pointing them out to my kid. I loved this movie for that nostalgia

I think the Satanist character was based on Anton Lavey, and the lady writing the book on supposed repressed Satanic abuse was very much giving 'Michelle Remembers'.

And Christou was totally a reference to Yuri Geller

I would put this in the analog horror subgenre. I am very happy to see this kind of horror gaining in popularity after being primarily on UA-cam for so long.

As someone who grew up in the seventies I can vouch for the stellar research & authenticity that went into this production. AI aside this will definitely be in my 2024 Hall of Horror listing. 💀💀💀💀 Thank you for this fun and insightful review!

I absolutely loved this film. They really did a great job capturing the seventies. It's not often we get something that feels this original.
I'm a recent subscriber, and must say you're doing a terrific job.

I absolutely loved this one. As a fan of slow-building supernatural horror, it had me the moment I learned about the premise, and it did not disappoint. All of the performances were great, and I particularly loved Ian Bliss as Carmichael Haig. He was that perfect kind of smarmy jerk who can be amusing at first but becomes insufferable the more you hang around him. I definitely found some interesting things on rewatch, including the images you mentioned. I also noticed that Gus' fear and knowledge of demons comes from The Exorcist and not some religious conviction. This will definitely be an annual watch for me too.

I agree with you, we need more movies like this. I like how Late Night with the Devil begins by creating a comfortable atmosphere and then gradually introduces discomfort. Although it doesn't have the same vibe, a movie that simulates a TV broadcast to tell a story with some surprises is Without Warning (1994), which is available here on youtube. Thanks for the video!

I really enjoyed this film and how the 70's setting is delivered. Thank you for your review.

My favorite horror movie of 2024 so far. Such an original take on demonic possession & SO effective I was in the cinema with my eyes glued to the screen the entire time.
Individual honors to the lady who plays the afflicted person. She absolutely creeped me out. Spooky! 😱
Whoever did the casting deserves a bonus as it's spot on from top to bottom.
Deserved a much wider theatrical release.

I liked it quite a bit. I wish they had hired an artist to do the artwork. There was only four or five of them in the whole movie. A good artist could've knocked those out in a weekend! Like you said the horror community is filled with great artists. It wouldn't have been hard to find one.

Yeah I am bummed about that but I still loved the movie. I’m sad many people won’t check it out due to the AI.

A buddy told me about the bohemian grove owl club years back, so for me personally it gave the movie that extra layer of "wtf is really going on here" vibes; like is Delroy exploiting this woman and girl just for the ratings, or did he perhaps welcome in the devil via Lilly through some ritual within the cult?? Possibly even causing his own wife's death with such a ritual. Such a cool creepy alt angle to view the story from. I agree w you I love the vibe of this movie, the production is so specific and on point; I wish they didn't us AI imagery but hopefully enough people bullied them so that others don't make that same mistake. Def gonna be a yearly Halloween season (or whenever tbh) watch for me!!

Perfectly reviewed! I saw it this past week myself and between the odd girl and the meticulously perfect period setting, it felt unsettlingly real. It's been a good year for horror so far, really enjoyed this and Abigail.

I really felt sorry for his side kick, always being bullied in some way by other crew members, especially the sleazy producer . I thought they were going to do more with him . I was expecting him to snap at somepoint while being put down by someone.

From what I understand about the AI part is that they were static frames and AI was used as a starting point for the artisit to work from like a reference.

I highly recommend a movie called WNUF Halloween Special (2013). It’s a little more like Television Terror (in fact, it’s kind of a rip off), but I found it to be a lot of fun, especially during an October pumpkin carving party. There’s also another great British movie called Dead Set (2008), which is the TV show Big Brother but during the beginning of a zombie apocalypse!

What was the significance of the person dressed up in the skull costume. I couldn’t figure it out. But they did seem to keep some kind of focus on that character. Maybe just wishful thinking

You pretty much had the same reaction to the film I did. I agree completely that we need more movies with this sort of behind the scenes documentary live tv broadcast thing. The closest thing I can put it in is a mockumentary but stuff like this and Ghostwatch and the WNUF Halloween Special really need their own sub category

Can't wait to watch this one, I hope it will be available on a platform I can access soon.
I don't love the use of AI, but when it's used as a way for a lower budget movie to save money, I get it. But I also get the argument that if we start to accept it in tiny doses here and there, maybe we will soon have a much bigger problem on out hands... I don't know, it won't keep me from watching this movie, that much I know.

    • @mandysmorgueofhorror
      @mandysmorgueofhorror  2 місяці тому +2

The AI argument is definitely valid, but I feel like people didn’t use the same energy to criticize Civil War for doing the same thing and it’s a much bigger movie!
