- I've been looking for an anvil for a while now. Buying them online is like buying gold. I finally found one at a local auction and was determined to not lose it. When I got it home I was pleasantly surprised.
In the process of cleaning it up I learned some interesting things about the age of my anvil. - Наука та технологія
Thank you for this. I just bought a PW 153 lbs. It is in excellent shape (I think from 1 -1 -3), one from 1905 made in England. I am so excited, as I had a Volcan 90 lbs, 1940s (not so good).
Congratulations on your find. I've still got mine :-D
I just got one, and been learning the history about it, so excited. Thank you for the video.
You're welcom, hope it brings you lots of years of joy
I just received an anvil with these exact marks. Thank you for the video.
Congratulations on the anvil! It's pretty cool owning a piece of history
Very interesting. Pretty old anvil at 150 years old but lots of cool history with it.
2:45 I can assure you the bathroom scale is wrong. Look up the scales they were using back then. Very accurate.
An awesome find and great job on the research
Awesome anvil!
I just found a 177 pound Peter Wright. The Old timer said" if you can pick it up, you can have it" its in my shop now. was hardly ever used. I still cant believe it. Good video!
Wow, good, no, great for you! If you want, send me a picture swdweeb@gmail.com. I'd love to see it
I tried to send a couple pictures of my anvil to your Gmail, hope u received them
nothen like a Anvil hunt.......and a score on top of it....Good times
That's a beauty! I just picked up a 157lb Peter Wright anvil in Ontario for $500, I couldn't believe my luck in 2020! Mine is marked 1, 1, 17 and has the solid wrought stamped in a circle. From what you said, this should date mine around 1860 to 1890 I think? Thanks for the info!
Congratulations 🎊. I thought about selling mine a few months ago but decided I couldn’t do it. I’m glad the video was helpful. It’s so much cooler knowing some of the history
I have one for sale 👍
@@dg5371 Did you sell it?
My son just bought a peter wright with the same markings, same weight too.
How cool. I sold my forge but couldn't part with the anvil. It's a piece of history. How is the top on his? Mine only has one small flat spot 😄
The edges of the top plate have been arc welded at some point. The puddling marks of the welds are there. The thin plate you refer to may in fact be the edge of the welding. It is tempting to overstate the quality of a find. All in all, a good find, especially the age.
I'm mot sure what I said about the quality given that it's been almost 4 years since I uploaded the video. I can tell you that there is a small flat spot on the anvil face, the rest is pretty saddled. I still have it mostly for sentimental reasons that practical
@@swdweeb Yes, they are a great find for the history alone. I have become interested in them ever since a friend found one. Thanks for the very informative video!
Good afternoon,
A week ago, a friend at work told me about a bid 200 pounder sitting on the floor in a local pawn shop. So I went to check it out. I found this one to be a Peter Wright stamped "PETWRIGHT"
And "ENGLAND" below that. There is also the "SOLID WROUGHT" encircling a 3. It does not say patent. There are two anchors in the forward feet (horn side)
The places on the horn could be where they made chisels and tried them out to check their hardness.
suppose so. They really hacked it up though
Mine has chizle marks in the side too
I have PW that has 1 1 1 on it. Upon careful examination you can tell that someone refaced the top. They did a fantastic job because the weld is almost invisible, but the top is a wee bit nicer (sharp edge) than it should be for the way the rest of the anvil looks, which is still pretty good. I think the 111 means that it weighs 122 lbs, or so.
111 would indicate 141 lbs. 112+28+1, so better than you thought ;-) I just did a work-around on my anvil and am pretty pleased with it. Posted a video of it here ua-cam.com/video/mA2y2pYeKTU/v-deo.html If I thought I could get the top resurfaced or replaced without ruining it or costing a fortune, I'd consider it.
Thank you for the great info.
I have a Peter Wright anniversary as well but I don’t understand the markings.
The think numbers are 0 45 25 .... kinda hard to read or maybe 0. 5 25
It does have the Patent on there as well
You're welcome. Did you ever get the numbers figured out? I put mine on a scale to confirm I was reading my numbers right.
Just an FYI the middle number will only be a 0, 1, 2 or 3 as this number represents quarters
This is my first Anvil and I'm very happy to have it and get back into blacksmithing after a 4 year break. (Baby was born then)
Most cool, send me a pic if you can. I'd love to see it. swdweeb@gmail.com. From what I understand, they started stamping ENGLAND into them in 1910
Don't touch the face becous you will lose the hardness of this anvil. But you can gring horn on this anvil to make horn clean becous this is wrought iron horn. ;)
I have no intention of touching the face of this anvil with a grinder or a mill. I agree, I will lose the thin hard plate if I do that. I actually hope to build a small 100lb anvil in the near future so that I can have a clean face and edges without touching this, what I consider historic, anvil. Keep an eye out for the new anvil. Hopefully the week of February 27.
perhaps those T,s are stamped upside down, actual number one?
It's possible
Tenho uma bigorna com o número 2 2 19 quanto ela pesa ?

(2*112)+(2*28)+19=299
May be TT19
I believe the T's are actually 1's
They are 1s. Best I can tell it’s 149 lbs.
