I think you analysed this wonderful movie well - but missed one critical step. You didn't explain why, after becoming selfless and caring at the end of Act Two (trying to save the old man, falling in love with Rita, being generous to all) Phil still doesn't escape the day. Instead he wakes up back where he was before. So there is more Phil needs to discover than just selflessness, if he is to escape. It is not until he learns to embrace the day and live in the moment (as he does in Act Three) that Phil can finally move on. This film is about squeezing the best out of every second and living each day to the full (including embracing kindness, love, music and art).
Robert Sprackling, I saw it a little differently. I agree with you that Phil's actions did not (and could not) get him out of purgatory. But my theory is that it was Phil changing who he was at his core that ultimately led to his "escape." As you and Jack correctly point out, in the beginning, Phil is all about narcissism and gratification. In Act Two, Phil is all about making himself and the world better, though action. But it's only at the end of the movie that we see Phil transform his core self into a humble, empathetic, compassionate, and kind person. It is at that point - when he's not consciously looking for kind things to do, he just does everything in a kind manner - that he is able to transcended his redundant, unsatisfying, existence. For me, the moral of the story has less to do with "carpe diem" and more to do with "becoming."
This movie is one of the best movies ever made, good acting, good direction, one of the best plot in the movie industry, a true masterpiece! I always feel sadness when i watch this movie, it's a well made rollercoaster of feelings, and kind of remind me of some of my dreams, Sometimes i dream something that crushes my "spirit", that i have someone, or something happens to me and when i wake up and realise i have a different kind of life i feel empty, a deep hole in my heart that cannot be fill... even though i have a good life, good girlfriend that i also live together... but those dreams tend to get me and change my whole perspective of who i am and the world that surrounds me.
Awesome, Jack! You go really deep with this analysis - and you are hitting it dead center. I somehow never saw the deeper level(s) of this movie. You really knocked this one out of the park again! Thanks for sharing your great insight!
I agree with the previous persons comments - really superb analysis. Excellent. I bought this on blu ray just a couple of months ago and watched it again. I cant believe it was Feb 1993 i watched this at the movies. 24 years ago. How time goes...But great analysis. Nice movie choices - many in my fav list: Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, Groundhog Day - i havent yet saw Muriel's Wedding in your reviews. Its one of my all time favs. Nice to see it one day.
I re-watched it recently and still loved it. It's a timeless movie and what you brilliantly explained about the message it carries has a lot to do with it (and Bill Murray's talent of course). Thank you.
This movie is just sublime. It's a monster of a movie, a deeply philosophical monster.... a wolf dressed in 80s slapstick clothing. It might just be the greatest idea for a movie ever. Take a bow Harold Ramis.
Groundhog day has always been my favourite movie of all time. I keep waiting for another movie to take its place but they never do. Thank you for talking through the stages of the film.
This movie is not overlooked or underrated at all, on the contrary - I see it's often referred to as one of the greatest spiritual message movies ever made - and it has just been discussed... again ,,, in my philosophy group, we watch it at least once a year and discuss
GROUND HOG DAY is one of my all time favs with some life changing realizations. You might want to check out THE MAN WHO NEW TO LITTLE. There are so many subtle jokes that fly by if you are not paying attention. Bill Murry is the JEDI master at capturing these characters.
I discovered a new one last year,, when Phil asks for the sweet vermouth with a twist, Rita says " it's my favourite drink" and Phil lights up and says.. - mine too, with a bright face,, because then he hasn't tasted it yet 😂 but the day after he has... so when he orders it is with less enthusiasm, but he acts brave and mans up to say it's his favourite drink... again --- before they drink to world peace. 1 and a half second scene,, I laughed for 10 minutes after, Bill Murray is a genius
+Jack's Movie Reviews That's my second video, the first one was "No country for old man" you have pretty good insights, love em! Please, is there any possibility of you doing "Somewhere in time" ?? The one with Christopher Reeve. I woulb be very glad and maybe some of your followers get to know that awesome movie! Thanks in advance :D
I think one of the best quotes in the entire film was from a moment in the bowling alley, as Phil talks to the two locals. He says "what would you do if things just happened over and over and over again and nothing in your life mattered?" To which one one of the men replies "That about sums it up for me." Really understated but really powerful.
This is one of those classic movies I watched embarrassingly late in life after confiding in friends that I'd never seen it. As is the case with many such movies, after watching it I couldn't believe I'd never seen it before, but I'm glad I waited until I was a little older to appreciate it. This is a beautiful film.
So thank you for that. If took me three full seconds to catch up on what you were doing at the beginning and when it finally clicked, my jaw dropped. Such a simple yet compelling way to introduce Groundhog Day! Not to mention how beautifully you explored Phil's character development and all the philosophical aspects of the movie that can help us shape our view of life and of our place in the world. I'm not as skilled with words, so I think l'm gonna use your video to explain my opinion on this movie to my friends. So thank you for that.
I watched this movie growing up and loved it! I watched it again recently with my mom just a while ago, and realized just how much I missed. After watching your video just now, I never imagined how big this movie really is. Thanks for the video, I feel so enlightened now!
I think the key was Phil had to learn to be of service to others before he could find love. It was only doing good that he could become an authentic person. The critical scene is when Ned accosts him for a final time at the party and tells Rita that Phil bought every insurance policy he sells and then says it's the best day of his life. Ned was the person Phil liked least in the whole movie. He finally decided to make Ned happy for a day, and that was his ticket out of the time warp.
I've watched this movie once, younger and find it so-so to be honest. Now, after the quarantine, I've went through all the similar phases as Phil and felt stuck at an empty place. This really reminds me that I still can change myself. I don't know how yet, but I have to act on it.
"Is this really any different to how he has been living his life up to this point? Every day he seems to be exactly the same: he goes to work, he goes home, he has nothing substantial in his life" *Right in the feels*
This movie only gets progressively better with age, but there was a time this film was forgotten. It even ended up in the $4.99 VHS bin at one point. I ended up buying that same movie and started to appreciate it over time. It is right up there with Pulp Fiction and Fight Club!!
I've just decided to make a personal resolution to watch this wonderful movie every year on February 2... until I can't. Thanks for the insightful review. It's just what I needed today.
I just finished watching the marathon on amc. Lol had it on the tv while i did chores and mulled around the house. Must have gone thru it 5 or 6 times while i had it on. Classic flick.
Great review!!!! Seems to me anyone thinking more deeply about this movie would come to see it as MUCH more than merely another rom-com. It was pretty special IMO. I'm not sure of the box office numbers when it first came out but I'm guessing they weren't nearly high enough! How anyone could rant & rave more about the likes of Star Wars or Star Trek or just SO many other movies (after having seen them all) is beyond me.
I’ve always cherished this as my favorite movie ever. It’s a very funny movie on it's surface - but with a deeper underlying philosophical message. Just like Phil in the story, many of us will keeping living the same day over and over again until we decide to make a change for the better. Only then can we move on and experience a “new” day.
One of the best feel good and life lesson movie And now a days lots of UA-cam channels analyse recently released movies or last 5 year movies You are the only channel analyse 90,80s period movies and classic movies it's help me to know classics so pls analyse films like these
Have you listened to the cast recording of the musical adaptation? It follows the movie's plot beat for beat, but goes even deeper with the themes and expanding the characters of the other townspeople so we grow to care about them as much as Phil does. It's just such a great experience and has all the humor, darkness, and heart that the movie has and the actor playing our Phil Connors, Andy Karl, is such a tremendously dedicated and hard-working guy and gives the role his all.
And if you don't wanna listen to the whole thing first, I strongly recommend starting out with Nobody Cares (which has an onstage car chase and it looks so cool live!), Playing Nancy, If I Had My Time Again, and Seeing You. Those are always the ones they tend to showcase anyway at public events.
The original script apparently started in medias res -- with Phil already stuck in the repeating day and having been through hundreds of cycles of the repetition. That could have been interesting, but it would have been a much stranger and more experimental movie. Sounds more like something Charlie Kaufmann would make.
Okay, I love your channel, you and I reach to the same conclussions when it comes to analyzing movies, I just want to say thank you, this channel gives meaning to filmmaking and is so good at breaking down the psychology in storytelling, keep bringing the good content, could you please analyze taxi driver?
Thank you! That really means a lot! I definitely want to talk about Taxi Driver at one point, I'm not sure when, but I can guarantee that it will happen!
I find it interesting how both Groundhog Day and Red Dead Redemption 2 have their protagonists decide to make amends with the time they have, albeit with exact opposite situations. One has infinite time, the other has borrowed time (due to a serious disease). In both cases, the protagonists decide to do what they can to help others with the time they have.

superficially as just another bill murray comedy, this movie never has been full appreciated, it has incredible levels of depth and a clear structure, a person losing his ego to gain the world
let me guess jack, tomorrow youre going to wake up, and make another video about another movie, just like you do every day, over and over again. Day after day after day, Am i right jack?
I'd have to agree. I also thought the score was kind of weak and the sound editing was bad at a couple points (crowd in background in the scene when Jyn speaks to the rebel leaders).
The film is about the Blue Pill White Knight. At the start of the film she tells him her shopping list of what she wants, foreign language, poetry, musical instruments ect. Phil is happy being single and just laughs at her, but... he is forced to relive everyday and change, until she gets what she wants...
I think you analysed this wonderful movie well - but missed one critical step. I wish the Old Man didn't die that was one of the saddest scenes where he keeps trying to save him but he always ends up dying
@SunTai I can confirm it was 30 something years. u can try searching
yup this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
Totally agree!
Amen.
Born Justice Rule don’t forget Good Will Hunting i cried during that movie it was so good ❤️
This movie is the most important piece of art in my life. I think about it all the time.
Finally, someone who doesn't feel compelled to say "cool" and "awesome" in a narrative. There are better words to use and you did the review justice.
Awesome, Jack! You go really deep with this analysis - and you are hitting it dead center. I somehow never saw the deeper level(s) of this movie. You really knocked this one out of the park again! Thanks for sharing your great insight!
Thank you, I saw it was on TV a few weeks ago, sat down watched it, and by the time it was over I was already halfway done with outlining the video!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed!

That's the best way to describe it, I watched it for the first time in 5 years a couple weeks ago and loved it.
And Andie MacDowell's talent too! Do not confuse Andie MacDowell with Andie Mack. March 27, 2020, 3:48am
This movie is just sublime. It's a monster of a movie, a deeply philosophical monster.... a wolf dressed in 80s slapstick clothing. It might just be the greatest idea for a movie ever. Take a bow Harold Ramis.
Completely agree 😊😎
Groundhog day has always been my favourite movie of all time. I keep waiting for another movie to take its place but they never do. Thank you for talking through the stages of the film.
Hear hear
such an overlooked movie. great analysis.
Thank you!
I wouldn't call it overlooked. I mean it is one of the most critically acclaimed movies in history.
This movie is not overlooked or underrated at all, on the contrary - I see it's often referred to as one of the greatest spiritual message movies ever made - and it has just been discussed... again ,,, in my philosophy group, we watch it at least once a year and discuss

Great example of a film that seems to get better with age. I've got an immense urge to go and watch Groundhog Day now, thanks Jack ;)
Thank you!
why does this one have 2000 views?? it's brilliant. just like the movie
Thank you!

Not quite, his real ticket out of the time warp was; whatever happens, I have this moment, I am happy .. now 🙂

Another channel figured out that Phil repeated that day for 33 years.
Which channel???
Link or it didn't happen
Its on the channel Mosh.
in the original screen play, he was in the loop for 10,000 years.
It was pobably close to a thousand years, not 33
This movie only gets progressively better with age, but there was a time this film was forgotten. It even ended up in the $4.99 VHS bin at one point. I ended up buying that same movie and started to appreciate it over time. It is right up there with Pulp Fiction and Fight Club!!

In my opinion 🙂

Jack's Movie Reviews I would love that!
Hahaha almost got me in the beginning :D awesome! love your channel!
:D!
OMG! ...I must have seen this movie a dozen times without connecting the dots between Phil and Phil! Thanx for your keen observations!
Love transcends time. Real cool movie.
Great review bro! You were spot on.
Well done, great description of a great film.
Couldn't you have waited until Groundhog Day came around?
I mean I could have, but when would I cover Surf's Up?

I have loved this movie. It is so funny and significant.
The message is to Live in The Now!
I watch this movie every christmas, number 2 movie after Noel, which also has a great message... Forgiveness 🙂
@J C
It won't be the last
And did you know, yesterday Phil clearly saw his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter 🙂
Just like American Beauty - a masterpiece of a movie. Love it. In my all time top 10.
Why didn't he just stay awake!?
That would make a nice psychological horror thriller.
There reaches a point where he'd half to sleep, then.......- take your little hand in mine-
I find it interesting how both Groundhog Day and Red Dead Redemption 2 have their protagonists decide to make amends with the time they have, albeit with exact opposite situations. One has infinite time, the other has borrowed time (due to a serious disease). In both cases, the protagonists decide to do what they can to help others with the time they have.
ONE OF THE BEST FUCKING FILMS EVER! LOVE IT
Fabulous! Guys, live the life to the fullest. Make the best out of it ✅
Just the best review
Harold Ramis (director writer) and Dan Aykroyd ( writer) had promised a part to John Belushi in Ghostbusters 👻🚫
Kinda bummed we didn't get an awesome Christmas video next week, but this movie is pretty Christmasy if we think about it.
Great analysis btw
Also worth noting that the film's structure is based around the five stages of grief, but your structure is also probably correct (they're both pretty similar) and more relevant to the topic.
The "problem" with Christmas movies is that they are either aren't about Christmas, don't offer much discussion, or have already been discussed to death! The Big Short does take place in the last few days of 2007 and early in 2008...
I mean, Shane Black movies are usually set around the holidays and when he asked why, he gave this answer:
It tends to be a touchstone for me,” he admits. “Christmas represents a little stutter in the march of days, a hush in which we have a chance to assess and retrospect our lives. I tend to think also that it just informs as a backdrop. The first time I noticed it was Three Days of the Condor, the Sydney Pollack film, where Christmas in the background adds this really odd, chilling counterpoint to the espionage plot. I also think that Christmas is just a thing of beauty, especially as it applies to places like Los Angeles, where it’s not so obvious, and you have to dig for it, like little nuggets. One night, on Christmas Eve, I walked past a Mexican lunch wagon serving tacos, and I saw this little string, and on it was a little broken plastic figurine, with a light bulb inside it, of the Virgin Mary. And I thought, that’s just a little hidden piece of magic. You know, all around the city are little slices, little icons of Christmas, that are as effective and beautiful in and of themselves as any 40-foot Christmas tree on the lawn of the White House. So that, in a lot of words, is the answer.”
Wonderful words indeed. Anyway: there are quite a few well known movies set around the holidays or even on Christmas Eve, but that doesn't make them Christmas movies. For some reason "Home Alone" and "Die Hard" are the exceptions - and both even have sequels also set during the holidays. "Lethal Weapon" (1987 film) is another example, so is Shane Black's IMHO great "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", but both definitely don't qualify as "Christmas movies". That said: Happy Holidays!
Groundhog Day is my number 2 favourite christmas movie
andie mcdowell in this movie is quite literally the perfect. women
Happy Groundhog Day!]
You should do an analysis of Let the right one in
Very possibly, I didn't love it the first time I saw it, I'll rewatch it and maybe enjoy it more!
Cool!
Late to the party, but this was great stuff, Jack!!! You've been a bright spot in a pretty shitty 2016.
Thanks Richard! I'm looking forward to a hopefully better 2017!
Loved this! Have you seen Midnight in Paris? You should do an analysis of it :)
Thank you! I love Midnight In Paris, I'd love to talk about it some time soon!
Awesome movie
Totally agree!
Isn't anyone else gonna mention this film did not get one nomination by the Academy Awards....? :-O
The greatness of this movie totally escaped the Americans, they thought it was merely a comedy
You should do a video on No Country for Old Man
;-)
It is excellent and was an unexpected but i think reasonable inclusion in a list I did of Buddhist films.
Might have to watch this again. I thought it was tedious and a waste of time (except Andie Macdowell).
I love it, and think it is hilarious, well put together, and overall a ton of fun!
superficially as just another bill murray comedy, this movie never has been full appreciated, it has incredible levels of depth and a clear structure, a person losing his ego to gain the world
Should've posted this video on February the 2nd haha
In hindsight I should have, but I also really wanted to discuss it!
what's with the outro at the beginning?
Because it repeats, just like the movie.
Jack's Movie Reviews oh I love you
Because the video itself is a time loop ;-)
let me guess jack, tomorrow youre going to wake up, and make another video about another movie, just like you do every day, over and over again. Day after day after day, Am i right jack?
Have you seen rogue one yet? I thought it was fantastic.
I did, I liked it, the highs were some of the highest in the entire saga. I had a few problems with pacing, characters, dialogue, and CGI.
I'd have to agree. I also thought the score was kind of weak and the sound editing was bad at a couple points (crowd in background in the scene when Jyn speaks to the rebel leaders).

He kinda looks like Ted Cruz. Great movie!
I love this film and Phil has an enjoyable character arc. Do you happen to have a Patreon?
Thank you! I don't have a Patreon, right now I do this because I love doing it, not for any monetary reasons!

The film is about the Blue Pill White Knight. At the start of the film she tells him her shopping list of what she wants, foreign language, poetry, musical instruments ect. Phil is happy being single and just laughs at her, but... he is forced to relive everyday and change, until she gets what she wants...
Good thing I stopped writing movies...
