buckeyefan05 it's a mix of a 506 sharp melody that's probably produced on a MPC or other pad, and maybe a Korg MS2000B synth to produce the continuous sound. As for the drums, well, they're done live! I toured with The Roots back in 08' so i was around their set and had the opportunity to learn a lot about their technique.
+cacacrafters Yeah man, basically you want to visit a site like vst4free or m-audio (i would recommend m-audio) and find J dilla midboard. Your looking for a midboard iVST which would give you stuff such as "j dilla drunken quantize". Play around with the iVST there and try different styles--i found that the "sweet night" filter does the trick. In terms of synthesizers, well, you've got alotta options. What are you currently working with?

To answer your question I basically do sound rigs for companies such as Mason Technologies and Tetra Tech. We travel a lot and don't get many breaks. I'm actually en route to Cape Town tomorrow. There's a throwback 70s concert next week which is predicted to have a great turnout, somewhat surprisingly! Tomorrow I'm assembling a contact y-5 mic board with 45" reach...exciting stuff! I also used to be a bit of a hip-hop zealot myself back in the early 90s but only recently got into The Roots and other more contemporary artists. And I must say that Lovequest is quite spectacular on drums. There's more to this song than meets the....uh....ear....heh...*cough*...well back to business. Best, Aron
wow, what timing! haha. I just returned three days ago from my tour in South Africa working in Cape Town mainly but also traveling between bands in Durban as well. My biggest gig was covering a band that tributes for Henri Crolla (one of my all-time favorites!) and also some jazz musicians such as Bud Shank. It's crazy to hear J dilla's influences such as jazz and R&B in such a musical environment. But yes, Justin you are correct. Try a mix of different waves, see if you can cross them to find a balance of something that sounds right. You looking for a AMG workup? that may be what you need if you are working digitally, but in the studio it's a little easier to finesse the equipment. Try scouring the web too; I know a lot of musicians have attempted to achieve that "dilla" sound, and some have been successful. A little *story*: I worked with a cat who went by Outta B who was a DJ in Boston MA, and on the side he loved to make beats. However, he got so obsessed with trying to copy J dilla's style that he lost track of his main passion which was DJing for concert venues. He eventually gave up DJing and went back to school for sound engineering, which is too bad because he really had a talent! He was a passionate DJ! On a side note, would any of you guys want to call/skype with me to talk about hip hop or anything else? I always love to hear people's thoughts on the current hip hop scene, and also reminisce about the old school days.
