- Onboard for the final few laps of the Guards Trophy at Brands Hatch, fighting for the GT race lead in a 1.6L Lotus Elan against a 4.7L V8 TVR Griffith. As close as racing gets, using every inch of the circuit through back markers!

That was some seriously good driving out of the Elan!
do not often comment on videos but this was great racing :)
Ballsy stuff! Most enjoyable to watch.
Ahhh the age old battle: grip build or power build!
Nice bit of driving, lovely to watch
Brings back memories of a road race with my 1969 Lotus Europa against a TVR Griffith....even with my Renault power it was the same...he got me in the straights and I slipped past him in the corners
So cool to have owned a Europa. Kind of a love it or hated design? I thought it was, and is, awesome. Did yours have the straight back buttresses or had they begun the style with the buttress that dipped down before extending back? (Apologies if I'm using the wrong terminology here.)
I got a chance to get a ride in the Griffith; that had the snarling 289 in it, I believe? Memory is a little fuzzy since this happened some 55 years ago. Thrilled this young lad something silly. Looking back I think it was very kind of this man to indulge this gawking kid a ride a couple miles up and back our rural road. The sixties sports cars, large and small, made me jump out of my skin with excitement every time I saw one. Had a chance to buy a '59 Bugeye Sprite for $150, but at 16 years old I had only $50 to my name, so it was a no-go. Couple years later I lusted after a 1966 Jag 3.8 litre sedan I saw in a used car lot. Real wood! Leather seats! Wonderful inline six with an intoxicating exhaust note! A real dream car but probably would have bankrupted me in short order. Still think about it, though. Especially when I'm watching the show "Endeavor" on the telly.
How flippin' brilliant is this?! My dreams look like that!
Also a great showcase of historic racing at it's best; close and clean with different vehicles pitting their different strengths and weaknesses in a proper spectacle.
Bravo!
Great driving.
I absolutely love this clip! A couple of very brave drivers…. The Elan looks like a right playful handful!
Fantastic - 1.6 litres up against a 4.7 job!
Absolutely brilliant driving. So entertaining!
Back in the day those little Elans were fiercly quick in there road form. It seems the TVR had the ultimate top end power Ecellent video
elan was having way more fun :) cracking video and driving by both .. brilliant
This is epic.
That was outstanding - how can that much hard work be that much fun. Nice one
Fan Bloody Tastic
Some serious over defensive driving from the TVR !!
Some of the best racing I've seen!
I feel you pain. I have been exactly there at Brands GP - in a 1300 Diva chasing a 4.7 Tuscan. Quicker over a lap - probably - but there is no substitute for cubic inches on the straight. Very frustrating.
Best race footage i have seen on here for a while. Are you using a 2000E gearbox as my example in my Mk 1 Cortina build doesn`t operate as good as the one shown ,
The GT Legends vibe is real 😊
Looks like they did a pretty decent job with the handling of this car back then, I remember it being twitchy on the brakes but fast if you know how to treat it.
The TVR handles great on the straights.
A twistier course and the Elan would have taken it - brilliantly driven. A "cheater motor" (a bit> 1556cc) was required to win this match-up.
Great video and driving, but please reengineer/relocate that hold down for the electronics box below the driver’s left elbow. That could do some damage in a crash.
that TVR driver had some skill on the straights......
elan needs 10 more hp and the tvr can eat dust 🤣
Got 'eem
Errrr…tires anyone ?
:-) :-) I've never seen Jon drive having to drive so defensive!!! :-) was this on Dunlop 'historics'? are they always so 'loose'? nice drive!
Yes they're Dunlops Jez, they move around much more on them but that helps with the rotation as I'm sure you know...
@@horatioracing that’s great to know Horatio! Will be using them at the end of this year and all next year (hopefully! 😊), maybe a shared race at Spa?
WHAT A DRIVE !!! CONGRATULATION TO THE BRILLIANT AND BRAVE DAVID ... HE IS THE WINNER ! AS GOLIATH CLOSE ALL THE DOORS AND IS NOT FAIR PLAY AT ALL ... PUSHING HIM TO THE GRASS OF BRANDSHATCH AND IS CLOSE TO BLACK FLAG... GREAT BRITISH RACING TIME HOWEVER . WILL FROM BELGIUM
2 ltr chevron B8 left for dust by a defensive TVR and an R26 using different lines each lap. Hmm……
Shows you the variety of drivers in the field! The winning Chevron B8 was 7 seconds faster than us on his best lap
@@horatioracing I bet you were having more fun though.
