The last part of E7 was filmed both realistically and tastefully. The audience gets the point. And the interactions are all respectful. Well done, HS.
The way this show models and demonstrates consent at every step of the way in that closing scene between Nick and Charlie is just so beautifully done, and so important too - educational without every being preachy. God I wish a show like Heartstopper had existed when I was younger.
I think Mr Farouk's mini flashback to his baby self was mainly about how he never got to see out gay kids at his school. He mentioned in the previous season that he didn't realise he was gay until he was in his twenties, so it's likely he never saw out gay people in his life at all, or that the few he did see were so far removed from his experiences that he couldn't imagine he could be gay too.
Seeing an out gay kid in a visible and prominent role in school might have been the thing that made him realise much younger that he was gay too, or maybe just gave him a reason to even look at himself and his feelings in the first place.
I think this is one of the things diverse representation can do and why it's so important, show people the wide range of people and not just one type. If you only ever see one stereotype of gay people and you're not like that stereotype you can assume you are not gay, since you're not like that. But if you see many different types of people, it becomes much easier to find things you have in common with some of them.
It also means the token gay character in a show doesn't have to get all the "gay" plot points, they can just get a story. The gay characters don't have to get all the trauma and discrimination heaped on them.
Heartstopper is one of relatively few stories that has more than one or even a few lgbtq+ characters and their stories are not about them being sad and traumatised because they're lgbtq+. Their stories have some trauma in it, sure, this is still a television show, but overall it's just them living their lives.
Completely agree with this
I love this comment especially the end bit. It's why I get mad when people complain that nothing happens in this show - like there's not much plot. But that's the point. It's just the day to day lives of teenagers that are queer and the varied experiences that they have. Straight teens have had examples of that so prolifically that they don't see that as ground-breakingly new. They see it as ordinary and boring, but queer teens have never been allowed to be depicted as ordinary in media - only as extreme people that are othered by their circumstances. For shock value, never allowed to be human.
I really do like the way the sex scenes were filmed. It's not explicit, but you get the jist of what's happening, and they're cinematic while still looking realistic. The way they smile and giggle at each other feels pretty true to life for how nervous and excited teenagers in love would do things for the first time, if that makes sense. It's cute. Sex can be super awkward in general, but especially when it's your first time. That doesn't make it any less exciting though, particularly when you're a hormone-fueled teen who's _really_ into the person you're doing it with lol
I agree with you about Jane - She and Charlie have developed an unhealthy pattern of communication, and they each were struggling to break that pattern. Each of them made progress at the end.
Thank you, Luke! 💞
I'm older and learnt about safe but never relationships so I'm struggling to understand how to get and make relationship work before getting where use the sex ed information
I quite like that they show the Mum trying to change and working at it, but still backsliding when things get tense. I imagine Charlie's anorexia/OCD was a pretty massive wakeup call for her and her relationship with Charlie, and that she's probably been doing some therapy of her own in the background. But changing behaviour patterns is a long process, I think this is a realistic portrayal of a mid-way point on her own change journey.
yeah, i can see both sides, i do think that jane is very bad and communicating
@NottsLaad oh 100% agree! And as the adult in the relationship, it should be up to her to be calm and in control of her own emotions, which she has absolutely not done. I guess I'm just saying that it's realistic to see this mid-point Jane - she starts out being in control and thoughtful until something pushes her buttons and then she reverts to her ingrained bad habits. But at least we can see she's working at it...
@@mindya5288 I can definitely see that she and Charlie have A LOT more in common than is immediately apparent, and hearing the way she talked about her upbringing (as well as meeting her Mother) made so much sense to me. It's really nice to see that they're at least acknowledging their own issues when it comes to control and communication (if we're being honest, both were valid but also in the wrong certain ways during that "sleepover" conversation), and it's beautiful that some common ground is found and the "generational cycle of trauma" is being noticed and addressed by both of them.
Im sorry i don't think you were too harsh in episode 2. Yes the mom has gotten better by this episode but still reverts back to similar when its not going her way. Clearly the father was alright with it which no one is talking about it was about convincing her. He could of just easily do what a lot of kids do and sneak around and do it anyway but he respected her enough to even ask. What people are also failing to realize or talk about is Charlie needing that sense of control in his life and not being defined by everything that has happened to him or what he has gone through. So him putting his foot down needed to happen and im glad he did it because it was good for him and hopefully for the mom to see how her specific behavior is affecting her child.
Hey sexy I'm glad you enjoy watching this show. Season 3 had me crying throughout the whole season. Nick crying really pushed me over the edge. Nick crying makes my heart hurt.
I think you and Brad (don't think I didn't notice) ought to get your leotards on and do a joint dance video.
😂
5:10 all trans people a very much aware of these issues lol just because she has supportive family and friends doesn’t mean she lives in a bubble
Well of course she doesn't live in a bubble, and I'm sure she was already very much aware of those issues. That doesn't mean they were at the forefront of her mind though. Transphobia is brought up multiple times throughout the show, but she was just trying to live her best life and probably hadn't actively thought about the _politics_ of it in a while, especially since she's only like 16... 🤷
