A little backstory: My mom has throat problems that were caused by swallowing a chicken bone. The bone tore up her throat badly. In order to get nutrition, she had a feeding tube put into her stomach. She had to put this feed mixture into her stomach for nutrition.
The story: She got rid of a lot of her feed that was expired, and the empty bottles filled up the rest of our trash can. I think they should have been put into a trash bag before being put into our trashcan. Our trash truck came, and the guy didn't even pock it up because of the feed bottles. My mom or step-dad had to call the trash company to explain the situation, and the guys came back up our road and picked up our garbage. I bet they found that pickup a little weird.

I always laugh at how their job title is stated😂 Gran used to say that she feels bad because no one says garbage disposal men. Just garbage men, and that the ones providing a service by cleaning the bins are the only kind, that are fine being called garbage men😂

My Stepfather who was in the military found a hand grenade.
Well that sounds logical since being in the military etc. but this was during the search for a missing person. This grenade was in a plastic container without the safety pin. The container was holding the lever next to it so if removed from the container it would fly off. He hold onto it till an artillery officer come by.
The exchange was my dad giving him the box like he is passing a pint of beer, the officer holding it like he is holding the Holy Grail.
    If I remember it wasn't a dud.
Also the missing person who was an old gentlemen was found later in his barn where he ended himself.

My weirdest but also the most awesome finding, around 2021/22:
An original IKEA Strandmon chair, in deep gray, though without legs - no overall damage, no bodily fluids, no odd smell. After a solid cleanup in my garage, I took that chair home.
Now it stands next to my original IKEA Strandmon chair, in deep gray, bought back in 2018.
The only difference? Due to a mixup, it has a set of 4 even legs for a matching footstool rather than 2 longer and 2 shorter legs for that "lean back" feel.

You could shorten 2 of the legs yourself. I would.

@@mikerich3261 of both my chairs, this refurbished one is preferred by my father-in-law. This lack of recline seems better for his back and this 80 y.o. man can get up with less effort, so I ditched the effort to trim the legs or to buy proper ones.

Did a few temp gigs for a garbage company, but all the best finds were at my janitorial job. CDs, books, movies, a Switch game made it home. Stuffed animals and small toys stay at work (every place needs knickknacks). Adult movies, magazines and toys stayed in the trash. And a couple I won't specify, but them being dumped was definitely a felony.

Dang now I am curious. I don't think I know of anything illegal to throw away, besides people maybe.

One of the local routes doesn't bag dog poop and they have a pitbull puppy mill, or worse. A 3rd of a dumpster full of dog crap, constantly. I've also personally seen someone throw a dead skunk in my own dumpster.
I also found $200 several TVs, and a full drumset.

I worked as a janitor in a retirement home. One of my duties was to throw trashbags in a press to compact them to blocks so that rhe space in the bins got used more efficiently. In those bags there were mostly diapers. While pressing the bags popped and let out a stench that i could gag from over twenty years later. The press was in a separate shed for a reason.

Not me but a friend's uncle. It was a body bag. A full body bag. It did not end up containing a body, but it was talked about for a long time.

That reminds me of the meme with the Christmas tree wrapped in a black garbage bags held together with dukt tape.
Backstory is supposedly that the guy left his tree up for so long it dried up. So he wrapped it to get it out of the apartment without spilling needles everywhere.
What he didn't consider was that this roughly human sized bundle dropped of next to the dumpster might get attention from the police...

Throwing out electronics is definitely disturbing when you consider, where particles from them disintegrating end up.
Also, if you're disturbed by food waste, do NOT look up Mexia Supermarket abandonment in 1999. That's some high-octane nightmare fuel right there.

Not only that... With something like a new-ish Ipad there is no removable battery. So there is an lithium ion battery in the garbage. Garbage that is about to be crushed by the mechanism of the garbage truck.
So yeah... Not throwing away electronics is not just for environmental reason. It has actually safety concerns in mind. I've actually heard about at least one case were a battery caused a garbage truck fire. And even if it survives the truck... Garbage is not treated gently. It gets dropped, shredded, compressed, shoved around by dozers, run over by the working vehicles in the processing plant, lifted by clawlike shovels... So many opportunities to damage a battery. And it might even be accumulated damage, that causes the thing to flare up inside a pile of garbage... And a fire in a giant pile of trash in a recycling facility or temporary dump is no joke...

Once as kid I found a cardboard cutout of Captain Kirk. Brought it home and place him on the toilet and waited for when my mom needed to use the bathroom... To say she was pissed would be an understatement. Still have Kirk today. Though he spends less time on the toilet and more in my closet.

I don't really understand why garbage workers / dump personnel wouldn't be allowed to salvage things. They're going to sit there and rot (or just sit there forever) otherwise.

I see so many of these dumpster divers and they make out so well it's not a hit every single time and I get that you're not going to get a hit every time and take a chance every dumpster you go into but I've never had any kind of come up dumpster diving

When I.T. sent us new PCs at work the office admin asked what they wanted us to do with the current ones.
    They said "toss em"
I told her I'd take them as I was in my "exploration" faze with PCs, trying to learn everything I could from how user privileges work to virus removal and this would give me several PCs I can really dig into without having to worry if I should f*ck up something in the registry or delete something that appeared to be bloatware but was actually necessary.
