#ManaoMonday: How do you soften Lauhala? Mahalo to Rena Labatte of Lauhala Designs for giving us a step by step guide of how you can soften & process Lauhala leaves. IG: @punarena #HawaiianPress
Very interesting. In Australia, we have the Pandanus with the spiky leaves. We harvest the core (the straight spike) before the leaves separate (spring/Summer) and strip the spikes off straight away and then process it whilst green. The plant is not harmed as it will regrow from the centre or form "pups". Native dyes are used to colour the processed strands.
Mahalo - you have a lot of patience and know-how, thanks for sharing this revered technique and your hat is gorgeous; I will appreciate those in a new way if I ever see one!
Thank you for this video! loved it. I have some lauhala that has been processed as you have. I purchased a few leaves, but it seems so brittle for weaving. It breaks so easily. Does it need to soaked or sprayed with water to make it pliable and not break?
One of the best instructional videos around, thank you
