Man, I miss this show. I wish I had followed Pernell Roberts' career more closely. I didn't realize he was the Trapper John in Trapper John, MD. R.I.P.
i remember Bonanza being shown commercial free, just so the boys and their TV dad could show the new Chevy line-up in the last ten minutes of the hour. they would do this on set and in costume.
TU FAN GABRIEL.
Chevrolet began sponsoring "BONANZA" after Dinah Shore discontinued her "CHEVY SHOW" on Sundays, in the fall of 1961. It was a long, fruitful partnership for both General Motors and the show, as demonstrated in the 1962 promotional clips seen here.
@johnorydupont Actors know who pays the bills. Pernell introduced the 1965 Corvette in the big Chevy commercial they did every year. Just take a look the "Chevrolet Commercial of 1965" in the suggested videos.
Obviously people recognize a comment about "hunting falcons and thunderbirds" as competing with Ford. Landon's remark about cardinals being extinct refers to the Ford Cardinal, which the company decided not to offer, three months before U.S. production was to start. The tooling was sent overseas and the vehicle produced as a German Ford. It would have been the first U.S. car with a V-4 engine and the first since the 1930's Cord with front wheel drive.
I remember Dan Blocker dressed as Hoss and hawking the Chevy van. I'm sure he got paid well for it. As for Roberts, he always said he left the show because his character was being treated like a kid. And he was right, if you watch the show the adult children are always being treated like hired hands by their pa. Lorne Greene begged Roberts not to leave such a successful show at the height of its popularity. Roberts did and his career never recovered. But Roberts never regretted his decision.
Notice Pernell Roberts doesn't utter a word, and hangs kind of low amid his two other co-stars. He was probably terribly embarrassed to be associated with this.

I don't recall the show ever being in black and white. I thought part of the pitch for the show required that it be shown in color.
They already tore down the Ponderosa Ranch House to make ay for condos.

Get a horse.
