So it's 7 years since you did this video and today I was given a jar of mouse melons that my friend made like bread and butter pickles I can't wait to try them and I can't wait to try to grow them too I'm in the Albany New York area in the US love you videos and thank you for the information
Graham R Dyer Hi Graham, yes I should have mentioned "cucamelon" because that's probably the more common name for it around the world. Yeah give pickling them a go! Thanks mate :)
Keyplayr61 Greenhouse Hydroponics And Gardens Yeah Keith I reckon you'll have good success outdoors with the vine and it grows fast also so no probs getting to maturity before winter kicks in. Cheers :)
I've been meaning to grow these for ages Mark. Thanks for reminding me and for recommending them as a pickling cucumber. I just love fermented gherkins. I didn't know cucumbers were hard to grow in winter up here too (I was about to try and plant some more).
I love them I'll have to see if I can source them and/or grow them in Melbourne. I love eating anything pickled and can imagine they are delicious like caper berries! Thanks Mark :)
Rubyant72 thank you! Yes, they should grow really well in Melb - I got my seeds from Bunnings there's an "around the world" range of different seeds and the mouse melons (cucamelon) was one of them. Cured caper berries have a softer skin but this may also be because of how they are processed otherwise yes they are both similar (but different)... Cheers :)
Self Sufficient Me Thanks so much, I have a Bunnings a stones throw away was just there to see Tobie Puttock cooking....I will get some of those seeds, now I have more room after clearing my pumpkin patch! Cheers Mark ;)
Hi Mark, thanks for this and all your informative videos. I have these mice melons growing and they have produced female fruit over the last 3 months, but today is the first fruit (and only 1) that has developed at all. All the others have flowered but dropped of prior to any development at all. We have plenty of insects and our own native beehive. We live in South East QLD (Hervey Bay). Have you come across this, and give us any idea why this is happening and any ideas on how to rectify this problem. Ta Dorothy.
I have these growing in the greenhouse just now, so hopefully they will provide enough surplus to ferment some over the summer. Heres a link to my video sowing them in the greenhouse ... ua-cam.com/video/LG5aYkuBK9c/v-deo.html
dobe762 Most likely as they are very good producers so getting enough fruit isn't usually a problem. I would expect yours to grow well your lean-to greenhouse. Cheers :)
Cucumbers might grow better in your climate if grafted onto mouse melons. We've got a problem with lack of warmth so cucumbers can be grafted onto pumpkins to make thwm grow better. (See my last video)

These little guys are just awesome! My backyard has a few wild growing plants of these in my compost pile. I’m very happy they volunteered!
I'm growing these for the first time this year! Also some West Indian Gherkins. ❤️
I'll definitely be pickling some of them.
In the UK we call them Cucamelon, But thanks for the tips on preserving them, I've never tried that....But I will now.. Thumbs UP.

I never knew about mouse melons. I learned something new today, thank you!
California Gardening Fancy teaching a good gardener like you something new... I'm very happy about that! Thanks mate :)

Mouse melons really do taste like cucumbers! They're amazing
I have mine planted outside now, so we will see how it does as compared to the greenhouse! Looking forward to hopefully getting to try some, Mark!

I subconsciously tried to smell as you put the jar to the camera 🙈
Awesome update thanks for sharing
Linda Penney Thank you Linda!
They’ll probably go great with Fish & Chips.
I was wondering how they would do pickled and or fermented. Thank you

When you processed the vinegar ones, how long in hot water bath? I do 5 mins. They tended to resemble raisins if I went 10 mins...
Just started mine
Great videos.
We call them cucamelons in the states

Funny little things, aren't they? Great cucumber solution for SEQ.

catscats50 Ok I'll check out your video! That's a good idea but I've never tried grafting cucumbers before... It just might work. Cheers :)
