    Have you thought to color-code the white emus with leg bands? That could help tell which is which without all the guesswork!

    Yay I'm early. I sure hope the emu eggs work out this time! Also, if you wanna do a hatching project I would recommend you try Serama chickens. They are the world's smallest chickens and very friendly.

    • @Duckieee64
      @Duckieee64 4 місяці тому +13

      I have 7 Serama chickens. they love being near or seeing any baby chickens. They will just closely watch the babies eat their food or drink or do whatever. I recently added new Brahma chickens and the Seramas LOVE them!!! Every night when all the chickens gather everyone back to the coop, I always see them cuddling together every single night😭❤I also had one of my serama hens go broody this January. She had 4 babies!!! First time for her! The other chickens fell in love with them.
      Even the roosters❤

    Get a marker that's used to see if rams are tipping ewe's or the marker to see if cows are bulling and you'll see if your female is marked.

    • @BiterAvid
      @BiterAvid 4 місяці тому +3

      I was unaware of this method for determining mounting. Great idea; much easier than watching hours of motion sensor videos. And the deed may take place out of camera range anyway.

    • @tomaswall6935
      @tomaswall6935 4 місяці тому +2

      @@BiterAvid ya it's very easy, if you have a few males and do them different colours you'll know what male is mounting also. There is a harness for a ram and a chin ball for a bull that I am sure can be changed a bit to work for these.

    • @donaldduck9493
      @donaldduck9493 4 місяці тому +3

      For sheep, we rubbed a paint like grease on the chest of the ram by hand. When./ if it mounts a female it leaves the paint grease on the back of the ewes.

      My father raised Cockatoos and while he wanted the birds to nest Hatch, the bigger the bird the less he liked the success rate doing so. I noticed the snakes are the same, it's just harder for raised animals to do a good job when they are bigger and it helps the parent animals recover better and quicker so don't worry too much if that ends up your results too.

    I KNEW IT! Bamboo was the Alpha male from before. The new area they're in is a new territory hence why Bamboo was trying to assert his dominance when they're all in the horse field. That's why Bamboo was depressed cause he lost the battle of dominance in that area. That's why he was trying to go back to his area cause he knows that its his own territory. You guys should just leave Bamboo along with Peakaboo alone on that Emu yard and the rest are just in the horse yard

    "This Bert, for the other Bert." 😂 That killed me, I understand that it's difficult to tell them apart and Jake calling them each Bert is just hilarious. There have been so many times I've worked with horses and some are soooo similar looking, almost twin like, it's hard to tell them apart. Hence why we add tags of their mama's name on the halters to help with that, even after weaning.

    while watching I had a thought. If the male emu don't get along and Bamboo is feeling broody, perhaps take some of the eggs to the other shed and see if he's okay with sitting on them over there and leave the "breeding" pair in the other part. I think the not sitting on the eggs is the part that is making him sad and off his food. Perhaps I'm wrong but just a thought. Thanks for the great content. Love every minute of it

    With Bert and Ernie, I wonder if you could dye a couple of their feathers to ID them or .... can emu's wear collars, scarfs or ankle band. (wrote mid watch but pillow case was good idea) Makes me wonder if they can be lead with a leash like a dog or by treats. Don't know if they go crazy over some fruit or something. 4:37 kind of fun chicken eating asmr lol. Also wonder if they don't hatch if you find a way to drain them by maybe drilling a hole on either end and hang them by making a wire hanger over the compost for if they are smelly so you don't have to blow them out, just probably need to poke a long needle in there and mix it around to break the yolk, then you can save the shell and the kids could maybe paint them for Easter.

    You can buy non toxic animal paint to see if bert or bamboo are actually fertilizing. You should be able to find some sheep paint at you local feed store. For sheep, you spray paint the ewe on the back and you can tell if the ram is breeding because he will smear the paint when mounting. I imagine it would work similarly for the emus, and would take the guess work out of it. Also means you don't have to be trying to monitor 24/7.

    I saw someone else with emus taking one of the first eggs and breaking them carefully to see if they are fertilized or not. you can see like a bullseye on the yolk like you do with fertilized chicken eggs.
    they will lay more eggs. and I know it sucks to not give a chance to the one you crack if it is fertilized, but if it isn't you can get your emus to not waste their energy on unfertilized eggs...

    • @whitehouseonthehill
