Sadly, as a former teacher who now works in the civil service, it is becoming all too common for mothers to leave the upbringing of their children to teachers who are not fully equipped or staffed or even INTENDED to attend to anything more than the ACADEMIC training of children, while the mothers focus solely on their jobs. Of course there are superwomen or super-couples out there who can do both excellently - but I would suggest this happens mainly when you have a career you love, not merely money-grubbing and climbing the promotion ladder like most of us. Yeah well the problem is that if there are few or no women to begin with, then any new women will have to be hired and judged entirely by men who can suffer from various gender biases. It's nice to say that there should be jobs based on merit, but in practice this doesn't always happen. Therefore it can sometimes be useful to at least kickstart the process. Although it's not much of a long-term solution
@@gordondavies7773 I believe that they have improved by a significant amount ,but I know there's a long way to go yet. It's undoubtedly a worthy path for positive change that many people continue to travel. I believe in total equality for everyone, a level playing field, one in which ability/ mert decide matters.
@@joebrown6768 I believe the key question is whether we should ail for equality of opportunity or equality of outcome. There is also a problem with meritocracy, as the way society judges merit leads to transmission of 'merit' between generations, as the children of those that succeed in a meritocracy inherit capital, both economic and cultural that takes them straight of the top of the merit table. We always forget that policies in favour of social mobility mean that people can be mobile in both directions, up and down.
@@gordondavies7773 meritocracy is the perfect ideal. Part of that is ensuring equal access to education, healthcare and basic life needs, so everyone has the opportunity to succeed if they want to give it a go. That and creating an economic environment where wages are the main source of wealth accumulation, capital has it's place and should have a modest return, but wages should drive wealth accumulation.
Promote for merit, like what the sea determines for a ship or when Hannibal was at the doors (but no one like to hear what Cunctator was...). The number of women on the top of something must be imaterial.
I do think merit should be a priority over gender and the like, but in practice merit is rarely the only consideration. When people decide who to promote or hire they tend to take into consideration how much they like/respect someone, consciously or subconsciously. The point of a quota is not just to increase the amount of women, but also to counteract the effects of biases somewhat and level the playing field
I adore the show, it had some good female characters, but it couldn't pass the Bechdel Test anyway... amusing. Esp. if you keep in mind that Jay & Lynn got a lot of their inspiration from The Crossman's diaries (as they had mentioned in their interviews) and thus Sir Humphrey was partly based on Dame Evelyn Sharp!
I was just going to post about "The Dame," but you beat me to it. Like most politicians, Margaret Thatcher was afraid of her, or at least intimidated by her.
Well, it only had a couple of recurring female characters. Hackers wife and his political advisor as PM. Both were good characters, but they never interacted.

@@r.h.8754 The British civil service has been highly regarded around the world. It was kept by Commonwealth countries upon achieving independence purely because it was so effective. One story about one Chair of one Parish Council really does not cut it as an argument.
Britain started their worst time under her and by the time she was forced out, Britain was their best. From there, the fall started again and finalized with Cameron.
Thatcher's Britain - the revenge of the incompetent managers! British industry was failing in the 70's because of incompetent management. Those educated to manage Empire proved incapable of running industries of which they knew little. The trade unions moved in to a power vacuum. Any factory I had experience of was run by the foremen, the mechanics and all those who had served an apprenticeship. The public school boys and National Service lower ranked officers who wore suits and old school/regiment ties didn't have a clue.
@@r.h.8754 The situation could best be summed up by an old story, possibly anecdotal. 'When a Royal Engineer lieutenant is ordered to build a bridge what should he do? The correct answer was of course, that he should call in his Sergeant and say 'We have been ordered to build a bridge. Carry on Saergant' and then keep out of the way. One of the problems in the 60's and 70's was that many managers had learnt their management techniques as National Service conscripts. An absence of technical competence was disguised by bluster and arbitrary discipline. No wonder British industry collapsed in the face of the Thatcher government's ideological crusade.

Quotas are what you have instead of achievement.
Diversity hires
‘I am a feminist’ says Sir Humphrey. lol.
Correction - he said he was an *ardent* feminist. Hahaha!!!
And there you have it
In 2024 I must say I agree with the principle.
More or less true to reality
Just like now!
You shouldn't promote women just because they're women. Promote based on merit. That goes for both genders.
If people were hired and promoted on merit (which is more then just competence), nobody in Yes, Minister would ever have a job.
The fact that there are no women in that room shows disregard for merit in the first place. That is why the camera pans out to show a room full of men
Fantastic comedy.
With Cressida Dick now running the Met this clip made me howl....

Excellent script writing and acting , thankfully attitudes have changed substantially.
Have they?
@@gordondavies7773 I believe that they have improved by a significant amount ,but I know there's a long way to go yet.
It's undoubtedly a worthy path for positive change that many people continue to travel.
I believe in total equality for everyone, a level playing field, one in which ability/ mert decide matters.
I wish they hadn't
It’s quite hard to enforce promoting for merit, unfortunately.
Yes indeed. If I'm undergoing critical brain surgery I wouldn't care two hoots what gender the surgeon was, as long as they were the best around.
The irony of this all is that some of the muslim nations he refers to had women as ambassadors and even vice presidents.
And don't forget that Britain itself was ruled by queens on numerous occasions.
It’s not about minute details, it’s the principle that matters
"The irony of this all is that some of the muslim nations he refers to had women as ambassadors and even vice presidents" -- perhaps now, but I doubt this was the case when the show was written and broadcast.
And now nations like the US give jobs JUST because someone is a woman 🤣
All this while Thatcher was PM....
She loved that show

was this ahead of its time or are we behind it? sad to things how not so far we have come
At the time this was broadcast, the PM was a woman.
"all those union leaders..."
yet it was a woman who finally put them in their place

I see a fair amount of hate here towards the ruling class being comprised of old, rich, white men. Would you prefer to be ruled over by young, poor, muslim women?
Yes
We would prefer to rule ourselves, in a real democracy, rather than ruled over by an elected aristocracy or oligarchy, be they men or women
The best leaders are people who are similar to their constituents in some ways, and who understand their problems and have shared similar experiences. This comes from small locally based democracies, not from out of touch people unlike yourself with a different lifestyle and life experiences making decisions about how you live from 500+ miles away.
People are idiots. I would prefer to rule myself
