To anyone who does this, take care of heating up the electrolytic caps nearby. They like to pop when they get too warm. Love seeing these simple fixes, have fixed loads of devices this way in the past. Good job!

Okay, let's get this straight: you unplug everything, remove the top to show all the naked electronics, you find this one doo-hinky, and heat it up with a heat gun - right?
I'm calling bullsh*t. Just another crank upload looking for attention and hits.
But, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I have this exact problem. Worst case is I'm no worse off than I was before. Still think your solution is bullsh*t but I'll give it a try.
EDIT: I take it all back. I was wrong. I did it as you showed here - but heated the doo-hinky for a minute or so. And now it works just fine. I'm indebted to you, sir. You just saved me a couple thousand dollars. Thank you.

Last Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, I bought at FB marketplace a Yamaha rx-1030 for only $50 when the seller told me if it didn't work he will refund my money back. Today, Sunday, I was still having a trouble fixing this receiver. I bought different cords rca, hdmi, optical but to no avail I'm almost throw this beast. I called the seller earlier and I told him that this receiver didn't work and he refunded my money back...
Later in the afternoon, I search here in UA-cam how to fix receiver with no sound and voila! I just brush the top board then it works!!! Thank you so so so much!!!

Thanks a lot for this. Your clear video helped me to try and fix the sound issue I had with my Onkyo TX-NR515 A/V Receiver. For the last couple of weeks the sound only came up after switching the receiver off and on again several times. After heating up the DSP chip, the sound comes up immediately again, already for four days now!

  • @DFDalton1962
    @DFDalton1962 Місяць тому +2

I can verify this works, and works repeatedly. I mention "repeatedly" because this solution is only temporarily. The unit will work for about a year after heating the chip. The first sign you'll have to repeat the procedure is you'll get no sound when you turn it on, but if you turn it off and then on again immediately it will work. As the problem gets worse, you'll have to leave the unit on for several minutes to warm up before restarting it works. Later it will take multiple restarts. Obviously it's a thermal problem related to that chip - the permanent solution would be to replace the chip or the entire HDMI board. That may not be possible or cost-effective now that this model is so old. And if you do replace the parts, how can you be sure you're getting a chip/board where the problem has been permanently resolved instead of someone just doing this temporary fix anyway? So this is a good way to get a few more years out of this unit.

Hi, my 616 usually works fine but after using it for maybe an hour or two, the sound starts to distort to a very low volume. Sometimes changing to stereo and not using a DTS or Dolby Digital brings back some sound to the main speakers. Sometimes, changing to zone 2 or 3 also works. But then mostly the sound doesn't really come back properly. It may be very soft and very underpowered. Can your method work? Thanks.

Interesting, is the heat application really responsible for the sound miraculously reappearing, or is it the power reset. After all the power is drained and then everything works. Other electronics do the same when a hard reset is implemented. Food for thought.

I have the same problem with my Onkyo TX-NR609. No sound and the speakers were not displayed on the front. I did the fix as you outlined and it started working again. I was very happy to not have to buy a new receiver.
However when I put the case back on and put the receiver back on the shelf the problem has reappeared. I tried the same fix again, this time making it a bit hotter and pushing down on the chip until it cooled. It did not work this time though.
The problem does seem to be the connectors on the DTS chip, as it worked initally, but maybe mine to too far gone.

160F is a bit low. The Tg of the underfill is about 150C, roughly 300F. So elevate the temperature a bit more, and then ligttly press down the chip and hold until it cool down.

Very likely your heating area is too large and affected the micro controller. Have you check the connector ? make sure to secure the connections.

Thx for the video! I hab the same problem and i fixed it with your tips. I've made a couple of tests with the temperature of the chip. The chip needs to be at 30° celcius to switch on. It will heat up by himself when you switch on the receiver, but it takes 5min. Then restart the receiver and everything is ok. Its the same at pioneer.

    • @neighorizon-4190

It's definitely not a permanent fix, but mine is still working. The idea is to reflow the underfill polymer (100-150C) and press down the IC to make better contacts of solder balls. Maintain the pressure until it cools down.

My onkyo HT-390 once worked with all the 5 attached boxes. But now only works with three of them. I'm not technical at all so have no clue what to change. Also, since using the sound system on my TV, steaming services like prime video and Netflix movies with dolby 5.1 don't work... So really no use of using the system. Which is just a waste... Can't find anywhere why this is an issue and if it can be resolved

I hate BGA chips... they are a poor design. There's NO way (except for using X-Ray equipment, to physically inspect that the solder process is going well when the board comes out of the reflow oven during manufacturing, and adjust the process if it looks shady. There could be a solder paste/stencil issue, an alignment issue from the pick and place machine, heater section out in the reflow oven, wrong temp, and so on, and a person will NOT easily carch the issue and fix the problem when they can't even see the problem to begin with.
The other irritating thing about the design of these chips is a heat issue. The chip is hotter towards the center of the chip, and ends up warping the middle of the board underneath the center of the chip into a cup shape, and that ends up pulling on the solder balls in the center of it, and either creates cold solder joints, or pulls the solder balls right off the copper circuit pads underneath from the board flexing from heating and cooling. The edges of the chip stay cool enough so that the solder balls under it remain adhered, and the chip stays put, but it's under the very center few square centimeters of the chip where it gets hot enough to cause the board to cup from the heat, and the solder balls get hot enough to get to a semi-liquid state, and the joints pull apart or end up "cold" and high-resistance after they cool.
