These look like very nice swords. And the prices look almost too good to be true for this kind of custom work. How do these Northshire swords compare to Citadel? I just built a custom katana on their site and with everything, even a display stand, was less than $600. Which is like an order of magnitude cheaper than Citadel... It is not the same level of sword. Lots of things are different and Citadel is a superior product. They are really going after different markets and not for the same customer. $475 to get a sword that was made to my spec is not bad and needs to be considered when looking over the other options. Anyway, it is a decent sword but I need to play with it more.

Perhaps but it is very unlikely. The iaido blades made already have ample reviews and the community knows what they are getting. The blades made by hand are typically very costly and I don't think I would be the best person to review the work. Don't get me wrong, I would love to do it but I am not sure it would help .

Hello Matthew and thank you for your great videos. I'm about to order a custom katana from these guys and I would really like to have your opinion if I should go with their standard cotton ito or the leather. What would you consider a better option for iaido. Thank you!
So I'm looking for my next purchase around $500 ish range. I was thinking northshire but are they Ryan swords? If so is that a bad thing? Also looking at swords of east, Ronin, Hanwei, Citadel. Needs to handle the zombie's, hold a blade, and med weight.
They could be a Ryan sword but not always. It is a bad thing to some but not specifically because of the performance. Any sword you use will eventually damage. Hard to say what will hold up best overtime + value. You can get something from Dan Keffler and it will probably last a long time but the price is high. Or buy something for $200 and don't feel bad when the edge rolls eventually.
Or buy a 1060 off BudK for $60 and beat that one like the neighbor's kid, and keep your good blades for things katana were made for. :) I just got such a Shinwa for that purpose yesterday. Check their closeout deals - there's several not-awful options
With sword destruction tests could you consider destroying the saya as well? A lot of swords have saya made with cheap wood. While this is by no means necessary I think it would be interesting to see what the saya can take as well. Perhaps slam the sword home with the saya strapped to a tree or something to try and break the koiguchi, hell go at it and try and cut the saya in half. Anyhow I look forward to see your review

I just think it would add some entertainment value with a tad bit of knowledge to take from it. Of course it’s your review and if you don’t find it to be useful or too dangerous without any real bonus to destroying the saya it won’t take away from the review at all.

@@Matthew_Jensen By the way, what is your opinion on people who believe that Europeans had superior martial arts and techniques compared to Japan? I believe they are different, but neither one is superior.
That is a deep question and I don't have a great answer. I can say that it goes both ways. Some people thing one art, system, culture, or way is better than another. It could be true or false and I am not qualified to judge. What I can say is many of the arguments made by one side or another are typically looking at a very specific set of facts without taking into consideration all of the context. It is a fun fantasy argument to say if some omnipotent being were to abduct a knight and a samurai of equal weight, skill, age, experience, ect... who would win? It is another fun thing to computationally model a fight between the same opponent and see who wins most of the time. To folks who have a strong interest in both, there is an understanding that the topic has a depth that makes it hard to quantify. Most people just want to know which is better katana or longsword, knight or samraui...
Obviously European swords are better. They slay dragons, can be stuck in stone, and if you happen to have an unfortunate boating accident, a hot chick rises from the water to return your blade.
I would venture a guess it happened in transit. It is not uncommon given the new lacquer and that the materials were in a place that was very warm and then very cold.
Matthew Jensen Purchased 04/2016. Went with 1095 katana, clay tempered, no bo-hi, sharp, leather Ito. Was pretty nice, only flaws were low quality leather Ito, the type with rough edges, and was fairly blunt around the yokote. I replaced the Ito and menuki myself. Dealing with Bryce was pleasant though not sure it was worth the $100 premium over the equivalent straight from ryansword. Have since found a random Chinese blacksmith who only does about 8 swords per year, the quality is far higher and cost less. I would’t buy from SoN again. Edit: have pics but don’t know where to send them.
Thx for telling me @Gorebashed , I made up my mind and decided to buy the huawei T10 clay tempered Unokubi Zukuri, no bo-hi for 268$ after looking towards the positive reviews and non of the negatives
It's cool that they can do different kinds of etched hamon, but I always thought of it as an unhappy incidental. Are you proposing that people ask for those on purpose?! Weird world
I can't say that everyone does, but I did. I wanted to show how they do as many things as possible. I would not expect someone to ask for different hamon on different sides.. or to have one side be a different bohi.. That said, I asked for it and they did it. From the customization side of things that is promising.
@@Matthew_Jensen mostly kidding on my part, I get that your goal was to showcase the customization potential. From that standpoint it's a win. Must have a unique tachikaze with the the three total hi, eh

How are walls made where you are form? All the swords on the wall together weigh less than most of the TV's you might stick on your wall.
@@Matthew_Jensen good point
i need help are SoN swords worth buying ? its a katana
I did a review on the sword, my thoughts are provided after part 2.
Do you have any experience with Katanamart's products?
I do not.
@@Matthew_Jensen Oh.
Well, they have a great customization page, but their higher end swords can be very costly.
That sword is about a $550-$700 based on what I have received from them
They sent à Sword for a review with a sire with a split in it? Genius
I would venture a guess it happened in transit. It is not uncommon given the new lacquer and that the materials were in a place that was very warm and then very cold.
Matthew Jensen hope so!!
Very good video
I'd feel bad for anyone that tries to rob him.
I have a sword from them, have a look under the tsuka, mine says ryansword.
That is interesting stuff. Do you have some details? What model did you order? When did you buy it? Do you have some pics n such?
@@Gorebashed does the chinese blacksmith you're talking about sell his swords online?
Adolf Hitler huawei-sword on eBay, nothing up at the moment but can see past swords by clicking feedback links.
Thx for telling me @Gorebashed , I made up my mind and decided to buy the huawei T10 clay tempered Unokubi Zukuri, no bo-hi for 268$ after looking towards the positive reviews and non of the negatives
Really u forgot the most important thing about the blade. The steel type.
WOW at your armoury i meant room
office
study
war room
relaxation chamber
zen closet
thank u
Can I have one
Waiting the review...And remember to tell us the prize...😅
Read the description.
@@fransthefox9682 😂 uppss..thanks
Lol, the Japanese in the certificate doesn't make much sense....like they used Google translate. Idai sano tezukuri no Ken.
Nice review though as usual, really enjoy your videos :)
I was super high watching this so when he speeds up the talking in the video as he unboxed the sword it really messed me up...
How much more entertaining am I when you are high?
Honestly about the same, i love the content and your channel regardless a little pot helps me focus in a little closer but that's about it.
How do you do a video of a sword you ordered and you do not even know the steel. You got a lot of knowledge but seriously? I mean really!
The main reason is I don't care that much. At least not about the type of steel. Also, I went back and forth about the steel type a bit over email and some things get lost in the fray. The steel type happens quite a bit because of the aforementioned main reason. If that was not enough excuses, I have more..
Tal😊
I'm not sure what that means
shi i want a free katana LOL
Ho shit sorry xD
