If you haven't already, you should check out the late Osamu Tezuka's "In the Beginning: The Bible Stories". Tezuka is frequently called the Walt Disney of Japan, creator of classic anime such as Astroboy and Kimba: The White Lion.
There's also a short anime depicting the Crucifixion from the POV of a criminal called My Last Day: ua-cam.com/video/QDRCwJHBCXc/v-deo.html
