proscriptor has bizarre talent. He does some next level shit. Crazy badass drummer and doing vocals at the same time. One time he was auditioning to be the drummer for Slayer and broke a cymbal. He didn't get in the band because Kerry King thought he was too crazy
Agreed completely with you. I loved the album to pieces but I only wish the last song was 1 long complete track instead of 6 parts under 1 track. Your metal taste never ceases to please me.
ABSU are very old friends of mine, back to their demo release, pre-Russ (proscriptor0 and whomever else makes up the band today. Never blow out the eastern candle!
I know people sometimes want you to review classic albums, which I totally understand why to you don't. But I was thinking that maybe this would be a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for Cal! Personally, I don't think Cal gets enough of a voice on the youtubes sometimes, so maybe you should send some classic albums his way?? Let him have his shot in the sun. Shit, maybe Cal needs his own channel to do this, Cal's Classic Album Reviews. What do you think?
Surprising you hadn't heard of Absu before. I've enjoyed these guys for quite a long time. Saw them live a few years back, and then ran into Proscriptor on the streets of Cleveland and had a chat with him, pretty cool dude. Thought you should have mentioned what a beast he is, smashing drums and vocals, both live and on record.
I like the speed and rhythm of Absu's music, but I thought the vocals needed a little more variation, they kind of sounded like Weedeater on acid or something. Other than that, pretty good metal pick Anthony :-) Please tell Cal that Abzu is not a sneeze...
@theneedledrop Although this album came out a few years ago, I think you'd enjoy it. It's one of theose rare indie rock records that I feel is one of the best ever recorded. "We Have Cause to Be Uneasy" by Wild Sweet Orange is constantly in my playlist and I'd love to know what you think about it. Doesn't have to be a video, could be an audio review on your website. I'd just love to know what you think about it. They only had this one album, but I think it's great. Sorry if this is much to read.
I think this is a very decent review. Nonetheless, it seems to me that many of the things said are just based on a few mp3 or youtube-uploaded songs, or in the worst scenario rumors - and I say this based on the fact that the guy actually said he had never listened to the band before. That said, I think it's quite lame to say, as someone else already pointed out, things like "these guys have had fast moments before". Also, as somebody else mentioned too, the lyrics here are a must-mention.
It's always so SATAN and intense to see them live! Proscriptor that does the drums and vocals at the same time on live just stops playing time to time to stand up and yell in a "Judas Priest" way! It's so much fun!
@RayasNegroOvejas you obviously didn't go into it with open ears then, because it is a fantastic record not only in it's variety but also in how rich and expansive the music can be. If you listened past Wait, the 5th track, and weren't impressed then there's no point being convinced otherwise. It's an extremely rewarding listen if you ask me though, even with it's flaws. People saying it's overlong don't seem to understand the value of it's length in that you can truly immerse yourself in it
@Picopunk3 Didn't mean that they're metal, just meant that those types of bands is about how 'hard' I can have my music. Post-hardcore bands seem to hit a lot of my favorable points from a 'metal' derivative, but anything really out of the 'metal' genre or sub-genre, I really don't care for personally.
I loved this album! I think it was a fairly purified attempt at an aspect of their earlier sound. That being said I really enjoy their more diverse sounds in the album 'Absu'
I used to listen to such music in high school - then when nu-metal came I couldn't stand it, and just mooved to different genres. There happens to be one or two really outstanding "ye good ol' metal" LP's every year and I'm pleased to see that it's getting more of them lately. ABSU was noteworthy since the vitriol (with dots) - the only US band released under cult osmose rec flag in EU. The new LP is perfect - for me. It blends all that I loved in Megadeth and Kreator together with really dec
i saw them at maryland death fest one year when i was aura noir's guest. they have blasphemer, who is really revealing himself to be a great guitarist and composer in his own right. this album is part two of a trilogy-blasphemer does some work on that as well.
@daddyfatsaxohten Well, I don't think anything is wrong with the lenght. I want records to be more than just 10 tracks. I want records to be like movies, books; have songs that connect with each other and build a story. I don't think the question really is about having "open ears", but sure, it depends from person to person - how much different music each been listening to. But, sure, I know how a record can grow. It's not like I have giving up on anything.
@FutileExistence Well this year at least, he has reviewed like 5 or 6 metal albums, one of them he gave a 7, the rest 8's, and one 9. Im not counting Opeth as metal...
Am i the only one who thinks this guys are going better and better and their first albums aren't their best ones??? (Don't take me wrong, obviously) I personally prefer Absu and Tara, being this last one my favourite.
proscriptor has bizarre talent. He does some next level shit. Crazy badass drummer and doing vocals at the same time. One time he was auditioning to be the drummer for Slayer and broke a cymbal. He didn't get in the band because Kerry King thought he was too crazy
that guy is amazing, quite doesn't do twice the same thing, and incredibly fast, with vocals yes...crazy
One of the greatest intros u did:D
classic melon review of a great band
This is a GREAT album. I knew about Absu before, but this album takes the cake. Keep up the great Black Metal reviews \m/
I just started getting into Absu. I loved coming back from a trip and seeing an Absu review from you in my sub box
Great review, Anthony. This album is amazing and I would have had no ideas these guys existed without you!
Agreed completely with you. I loved the album to pieces but I only wish the last song was 1 long complete track instead of 6 parts under 1 track. Your metal taste never ceases to please me.
yeah! I was hoping that you would review this. awesome record!
Fun review! Just exhumed the record after years and years, and it still sounds as fresh and awesome as on day one!
ABSU are very old friends of mine, back to their demo release, pre-Russ (proscriptor0 and whomever else makes up the band today. Never blow out the eastern candle!
Great stuff, thanks for the review.
I know people sometimes want you to review classic albums, which I totally understand why to you don't. But I was thinking that maybe this would be a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for Cal! Shit, maybe Cal needs his own channel to do this, Cal's Classic Album Reviews. What do you think?
Also how does this fare up to Absu's Tara album. That shit was fast and insane thorough with the exception of the intro, outro and a middle track.
I hope you're allergies get better Anthony.
Oh yeah! Didn't you link this one from your site a while back? I remember listening to it and favorited it right away :D
@FutileExistence Was fallen this year? My mistake I didn't remember that. And Disma I believe...
It sounds like you're coming down with something, my dude, god bless you!
I like the speed and rhythm of Absu's music, but I thought the vocals needed a little more variation, they kind of sounded like Weedeater on acid or something. Other than that, pretty good metal pick Anthony :-) Please tell Cal that Abzu is not a sneeze...

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the latest Steven Wilson album
What's so good with M83? I listened to the whole album, but didn't found any fantastic with it.
I like their album art. And the review. I'll have to check 'em out!
Do some episodes with older albums, and your favorite albums of all time and whatnot. That would be rad.
I think this is a very decent review. Nonetheless, it seems to me that many of the things said are just based on a few mp3 or youtube-uploaded songs, or in the worst scenario rumors - and I say this based on the fact that the guy actually said he had never listened to the band before. you should review Cthonic - Takasago Army if you feel so inclined
Anthony, I hope you go back and listen to their discography.
It's always so SATAN and intense to see them live! Proscriptor that does the drums and vocals at the same time on live just stops playing time to time to stand up and yell in a "Judas Priest" way! It's so much fun!
that m83 review on its way?? i understand if you have to take your time. Its huge. But it needs to be done!
I had a HUNCH you were actually Cal, but now I know you're also the voice of Elmo. Busiest nerd indeed.
two vocal styles, you forgot the King Diamond wails on the opener. Besides that I agree.
That synth you mentioned doesnt just sound like a mellotron.
it IS a mellotron. The drummer plays it.
You quite got that absu unique feeling of crazy fast not linear black symphonic metal
I want to see your opinion on
Insomnium- One for Sorrow
It's been a while since you've done a track review. Why not the new Roots ft. Big K.r.i.t. - Make My.
@RayasNegroOvejas you obviously didn't go into it with open ears then, because it is a fantastic record not only in it's variety but also in how rich and expansive the music can be. Please review the new Deportees album "Islands and Shores". Thanks.
I loved this album! I think it was a fairly purified attempt at an aspect of their earlier sound. That being said I really enjoy their more diverse sounds in the album 'Absu'

Insomnium - One For Sorrow would be my choice for a review.
@theneedledrop Yeah, if you like this, you will also enjoy the new Skeletonwitch. (Prosthetic contact!)
@FutileExistence Well this year at least, he has reviewed like 5 or 6 metal albums, one of them he gave a 7, the rest 8's, and one 9. Im not counting Opeth as metal...
@michaelhinojosa13 Why, do you hate it?
That feel when there are too many big releases and Anthony will never review your favourite album of the year (poor Twin Sister)
